In this comedy, a charming con man teams up with a boxer fallen on hard times in hopes of making some quick money. After doing time for selling art that turned out to be forged, Gabriel Caine (James W... read more read more...oods) and his partner Fitz (Oliver Platt) set their sights on a village called Diggstown; Fitz arrives first and takes several well-heeled locals in a high-stakes poker game, and then Gabriel follows to make a sporting proposition to John Gillon (Bruce Dern), the city's wealthiest citizen. Gabriel tells Gillon he has a boxer that can beat any ten opponents Gillon can line up, in the same day. Gillon takes the challenge and places a big enough wager to make matters even more interesting, but now Gabriel has to convince Honey Ray Palmer (Louis Gossett Jr.), a middle-aged former boxer who has been taken for a ride by Gabriel in the past, to go along with this scheme. In the meantime, Gabriel works out a deal with gangster Victor Corsini (Orestes Matacena) to back his bets while romancing Emily (Heather Graham), the sister of a large and ill-tempered fighter Gabriel met while behind bars. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I love how just when you think its over they put in 1 twist after another.James Woods was good as a con artist & Louis Gosset Jr. as a boxer is good also but my favorite has to be Bruce Dern. He's GREAT anytime he plays an A-hole or villain.

Luv James Woods and Louis Gossett Jr but this lame movie wasn't the best vehicle for showcasing their acting talents

Maybe the most underrated movie I've ever seen. It's a con artist versus con artist flick and it's done well. Funny and you probably haven't seen it!

A movie essentially about a con... one "big" score. But in the world of movies... its on a much smaller scale than most movies of its ilk. This movie has a bit of everything. Drama, comedy... twists... and a great ensemble cast. And just when it looks like its the end... ther... read moree's more... and just when you think you know whats gonna happen... it gets turned a bit on its ear. A good watch and one of my personal faves... in my opinion, one of those underrated gems.

A fun movie with great acting. One of the very few movies where James Woods doesn't play some arrogant jerk, but instead plays the used-car-dealer schtick that made him popular. Gossett Jr. is gold as always.

This is a good film just to sit back and relax. More than enough laughs from start to finish. James Woods is the perfect con man, while Louise Gossett Jr. is one great boxer. I know i couldnt do 10 matches in one day but with Woods in my corner i would give it my all.

A great con pulled off in this movie. Since it was Bruce (I shot John Wayne in the back)Dern getting conned, it made the movie that much better.

James Woods at his best; Louis Gossett Jr. at his best; Bruce Dern at HIS best and everyone else brings their A game. Tragically underseen comedy with boxing.
