This Hammer film production is a surprisingly frightening horror thriller and a hoot-fest for lovers of over-the-top acting. Young Pat Carroll (Stefanie Powers) goes to the home of her dead fiancé to ... read more read more...meet his beloved mother, Mrs. Trefoile (Tallulah Bankhead). There, she discovers that Mrs. Trefoile is not the loving mother she had anticipated, but rather a grieving psychopath who blames Pat for the death of her son. Tallulah Bankhead, in her last film, has never been know for her subtle acting, but in this she lets go of all restraint and gives a performance equal to that of Bette Davis in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Her maniacal intensity is comic, camp, and surprisingly effective. Stefanie Powers, who underplays her role, is a great contrast as the puzzled and then terrified Pat. This movie is a must-see for all lovers of camp horror movies or fans of the memorable Tallulah Bankhead. Die! Die! My Darling! was also released as Fanatic. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

I really enjoyed this crazy thriller, it was intense, and the actors are good. I highly recommend it.

Such a haggard movie. Although I will give credit for having the villain be a batshit raving Jesus freak, which Bankhead plays perfectly as she sort of mugs Baby Jane. And what's scarier is that these people exist. Seeing Donald Sutherland play the kindly and retarded Strong Guy ... read morewas a nice break alongside with the interesting sets. Basically it's a British What Ever Happened To Baby Jane. By the way, the Misfits song inspired by this movie is much better.

Well-acted, but relentlessly lurid, unpleasant and simply no fun to watch. A sense of humor is crucially lacking. Stephanie Powers sure was a beauty, though. Donald Sutherland's "Igor"-type role is rather embarrassing, given his subsequent achievements.

I found this movie to be quite good. Bankhead playing a crazy, religious zealot imprisoning and torturing strong-willed Powers equals entertaining. They both played their roles so well, that it almost felt like watching a frightening documentary.

OK, how did I not know this was a Hammer film? Weird movie with calliope music keeping a constant counterpoint to the "suspense" of a 20-something woman being held by a 65-year old nutjob. Tallulah waves a pistol around with no apparent idea of how to actually hold it. Donald ... read moreSutherland appears in one of his first roles, channeling Robert Duvall's Boo Radley from To Kill a Mockingbird. Perhaps all aspiring actors in the '60s were required to play mentally retarded men in order to earn their SAG card??

The last time Miss Bankhead appeared in a film was in the 1953 Main Street to Broadway. Although she towers above the cast and story, her present effort adds little to her record. Full Review

One of the best of Hammer's psychological thrillers, mainly thanks to Richard Matheson's ingenious and terrifying script. Full Review

Throw-away Tallulah Bankhead vehicle is a curiosity at best.

Magnificent scenery chewing from Tallulah in a pretty good thriller with smart direction.

Has tremendous tension, especially for a film that sticks close to its formal kidnapping plot. Full Review
