Director Shusuke Kaneko picks up right where Death Note left off with this sequel to the box-office phenomenon that finds Light finally giving in to his dark side. In the first Death Note, Light (Tats... read more read more...uya Fujiwara) focused his wrath on the criminal element, but these days the troubled teen is a bit more hasty in wielding his deadly pen. Lately, Light has taken to eliminating just about anyone who happens to get on his bad side -- a disturbing development that finds the police stepping up their efforts to discover the mysterious killer's true identity. Public opinion is split about what to make of Light's murderous exploits; while some view him as a godsend, others deride him for assuming the roles of judge, jury, and executioner. To the regular citizens, Light has taken on a godlike role and is frequently referred to as Kira (a katakana variation on the work "killer"). It seems that the teenage detective L (Kenichi Matsuyama) is hot on Light's trail, and as the clueless police task force continues to speculate, Light does his best to throw L's investigation off balance. When yet another notebook is dropped by death god Rem, adorable television personality Misa Amane (Erika Toda) discovers it and realizes that she now has the power to identify other notebook owners. Now, despite the fact that Light and Misa fall for each other hard, Light knows that their relationship can only end in disaster and attempts to keep his distance despite a growing emotional attachment to the pretty popular icon. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

    "Kira is justice."

If you liked the first Death Note movie, you'll like this one, too. Another god of death, a second death note, a new Kira (or, perhaps two new Kira's), and the two geniuses, Light and L, working together as both allies and enemies. I'd say that the first movie... read more was a little more clever, but this one adds some interesting new characters.

There really aren't many better manga or anime to live-action movie adaptations, in my opinion. The Last Name is a smart mix of investigation, subterfuge and the supernatural, wrapped around an interesting premise. I fully recommend this dark, well-acted (looooove Erika Toda) sequel (as well as the first movie). I was a little disappointed with how it ended, but that's purely because of the characters I was rooting for.

Still a smart piece of entertainment but definitely not as much fun as the first Death Note. I can sort of see the sense of introducing new characters to keep things fresh, even if they do obscure the main focus of interest, the deadly duel between Kira/Light Yagami and his sugar... read more junkie nemesis, L, but the fussy expansion of the conditions of use of the death note at the start comes across as a disingenuous screenwriter bending his own rules to accommodate his latest brainwave.

Picking up right where Death Note left off, this sequel, or continuation, is more or less similar to its predecessor, with a much more drawn out and deeper story.

The beginning of this motion picture reiterates all the rules of the "Death Note" again and the dialogue for

... read more the first 5 minutes quietly gives background from the first film. Despite all that, this will not necessarily help those that are watching this without having seen the first. It is more of a recap for those who HAVE SEEN the first.

The style of this movie, once again, has that low budget feel to it and that is perfectly OK. The story is interesting and it keeps the viewer paying attention, as all the back and forth strategies between the 2 lead characters feel like something out of Mission Impossible. The story is also a little drawn out, which makes the movie reach the 2 hour 20 mark.

The CG is minimal as Ryuk and the newcomer, Rem, are the only 2 entirely CG characters. There is also a small glimpse of another "God of Death" as there is a little amount of back story for Rem's character.

Ken'ichi Matsuyama steals the show as L again and his constant sweet tooth is as agitating as ever. The cute Erika Toda, who has a small role in the first installment, steps up for a major role this time around and the sexy Nana Katase comes in to play an intricate part of the story.

Death Note: The Last Name offers up a great science fiction story that keeps the brain working. There is no question that this is for those that enjoyed the first Death Note.

Fantastic battle between the greatest minds begins Kira and L with the winner controlling the world. Wonderful ending to the story, more better than the first one. These characters are really familiar in the following Japanese manga-anime.

An excellent sequel to the original film. It doesn't stray too far from the format of the first film, instead deciding to make existing relationships and characters more complex. The battle of wits is the real highlight inthis film as it twists and turns and keeps it open as to w... read moreho really has the upper hand. An extension of the God of Deaths world and mythology is also a nice tease but never threatens to overrun the film.Add on top of that a new god and a particularly excellent second in command to Kira and this makes for an epic two parter which makes you wish there was more.

Ken'ichi Matsuyama did a much better job being L in this one than in the first Desu nôto film. The mask was adorable. :D

A fantastic conclusion, Death Note 2 is even better than the first film. A complex, very clever story with some brilliant twists and a perfect ending. Review soon.

Decent sequel to the hit first movie. In this one, Light joins the task force hunting the mysterious killer of criminals to take away any suspision of himself being the killer. A clever move? Or has L got a cleverer plan in mind. This is just as clever as the first film with some... read more great action and twists along with the brilliant story. A must see if you liked the first.

I wish that the different ending had been executed better.

It's like Infernal Affairs/The Departed crossed with Devilman, Primal Fear and Drop Dead Fred. If that combination doesn't scream "Watch me!" to you, well, you're wrong. Full Review

A pity that Kaneko's direction is once again too workaday to fashion such strong material into a truly engaging visual experience. Full Review
