Michael Winner ups the ante once again in Death Wish 3. Any pretense of Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) having a career in architecture is completely gone. Kersey's new career appears to be as a profess... read more read more...ional vigilante, blowing away muggers, rapists and thieves off the mean streets -- or as he terms it "thinning the herd." Back in New York City, Kersey, with his usual luck, arrives just in time to find an old friend dying after a vicious beating by a multi-cultural gang of thugs. The cops arrest Kersey, but it just so happens that police chief Richard S. Shriker (Ed Lauter) is like Kersey with a badge: "I'm the law, and that means I get to violate your civil rights." He makes a deal with Kersey: he can go free as long as he keeps the cops informed of his death counts. Kersey grunts in agreement and proceeds to move into a decaying tenement building in the middle of a bombed out gang war zone. The building is populated by a group of elderly tenants who are terrified by the neighborhood gang warfare. Kersey declares his own personal war on the neighborhood gang, led by a frenzied leader named Fraker (Gavan O'Herilhy), who wears a reverse Mohawk hair-style. As Kersey devises booby traps and trip-wire bombs to confound the gang, the senior citizens gleefully take pot shots at the wounded gang members from their windows. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

One cannot explain how inconceivably awful this film is.

    Bronson on a killing rampage!
  • January 28, 2008
There are few movies out there that can honestly be called classics, Deathwish 3 is one. I must have watched this movie dozens of times, yet each time it is just as ridiculously funny. From the outset the movie explodes with laughs. Kersey's trip to jail, where he is threatened b... read morey some thug, who apparently high on goof balls, decides to attack the most giant guy in the jail for no reason and is bloodily beaten down. At this point he turns back to Kersey and curses him like it is his fault! Make no sense? Don't let that stop you, there is more where that came from. Next the police inspector beating Kersey up, then abruptly out of nowhere saying, `you see, I'm a big fan of yours'! . There are so many other hilarious plot inconsistencies. Mr.Kaprov saying `Mr.Kersey, it's 90 degrees outside!' as he is wearing a full shirt and thick sweater! Or Kersey's friend Charlie, who somehow managed to smuggle back two massive machine guns from Korea. Did he take that in his carryon luggage on the trip back? Add to all this lame romance that Kersey and the public defender have and you have the making of a masterpiece. For whatever reason, the desperate woman wants a date with Kersey. The romance that ensues is epic, until unfortunately, like all women that Kersey dates, she is horribly killed. The final piece of the puzzle is some of the best one liners in any movie. Some include, `it's your wife, she is sick or... something' Fraker, `bulletproof just like yours asshole' Fraker, `they call him the giggler, he laughs when he runs' Bennet, "I'll kill a little old lady for you. Catch it on the 6 o'clock news!" Fraker. I could go on and on. You owe it to yourself to rent this extraordinary film. Truly one of the greatest ever made!

Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) returns to NYC where he eventually embarks on an all-new rampage that is actually encouraged by frustrated police chief Richard Shriker (Ed Lauter, who had done several pictures with Bronson) to do his thing after legions of greasy psychos are laying... read more waste to the inner city - the primary bad guy is Manny Fraker (Gavan O'Herlihy) and he has a score to settle with Kersey.

More of a straightforward action movie than any sort of message movie or grisly exploitation flick - tons of gunfire, many violent deaths, lots of stunts. The film-makers, in order to make us, the audience, as furious as possible, kill off many of the decent folk in the film. (To that end, I knew it was inevitable that Kathryn Davis (Deborah Raffin), the new obligatory love interest for Kersey, would get offed when she expressed desire to get out of the city.

Typical vigilante picture, no better or worse than most. Writer Don Jakoby (using the pseudonym Michael Edmonds) concocted some of the most god-awful dialog I've ever heard, and plotting is pretty much non-existent. Of course, those of us who enjoy films like this don't watch them for the writing. We watch them hoping for wall-to-wall, over-the-top, in-your-face, violent action scenes, which this film delivers in large doses for its chaotic climax. Kersey shows some ingenuity in this film, booby-trapping apartments so that the bad guys seriously wound themselves trying to enter. You will also see an incredible assortment of weaponry in "Death Wish 3" - much of it ordered through the mail, no less.

The supporting performances by Ed Lauter, Gavan O'Herlihy, and Martin Balsam are reasonably good. If you're curious, you can check out the early appearances by some familiar faces: Alex Winter (a.k.a. "Bill" from the "Bill & Ted" movies), Marina Sirtis (a.k.a. "Troi" from 'Star Trek: The Next Generation') and Ricco Ross ("Aliens", "Wishmaster"). As in the previous movie, the music is composed and performed by Jimmy Page (although I actually liked his score for "Death Wish II" more - it was one of that movie's more worthy components).

It's silly and ridiculous and so bad that its good, but in the end it does deliver the goods for action fans.

Even aged 63, Charles Bronson's still running around blowing gangs away.
  • February 18, 2009
It's hard not to enjoy this series. Even though Bronson is always watchable, the terrible story, music, and editing make it easy to discredit. The original Death Wish movie got in trouble for glorifying violence, however this does it to a level that's actually great fun to watch.

This is where the saga swings away a bit from being a gritty hard boiled tale of revenge to being an action oriented bullet fest. I love the final battle though.

bullets abound as the DW series continues to entertain...Bronson now is more into baiting the baddies....good humor spiced with the violence..this movie won't disapoint!
  • December 7, 2007
This is the one where Paul Kersey turns into Maguyver. Really entertaining with a great psychotic villain. Also love the scene where the DA gets a cab out to where she believes Kersey possibly lives, sees him walking on the street and asks him out on a date... after he is relea... read moresed from jail. Well, she is the first person to ever look at Bronson and her immediate reaction is that he's "gentle". Awesome movie that is constantly entertaining.

There is not a moment of credibility in the movie and the ending is sheer chaos, and anticlimactic at that. Mr. Winner runs out of imagination before Mr. Bronson runs out of ammunition. Full Review
