Featuring a screenplay by Tony Giglio (Chaos), Death Race 2 follows convicted cop-killer Carl Lucas (Goss) as he vies for freedom by competing in the most deadly reality show ever conceived. The U.S. economy has completely collapsed, and as lawlessness spreads, private prisons crop up all across the country. Corruption reigns in these for-profit penitentiaries, and Terminal Island is home to some of the most violent offenders in the world. Lucas has just been handed a life sentence for killing a cop. Just when it looks like he'll be spending the rest of his days behind bars, unscrupulous television producer September Jones shows up seeking contestants for a brutal new game show where prisoners battle it out in high-performance death machines equipped with lethal weapons. The reward for surviving this psychotic demolition derby: freedom. Before long Lucas is fastening his seat belt, and preparing for the ride of his life. By the time this race is over, an apocalyptic legend will be born. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

If your going to make another death race it should be built on a larger scale due to raised expectations. Only difference is, this one is gorier and filled with more sex. Death Race 2 is a clear case of Approach With Caution. Hooray for pleasant surprises, though, because this ultra-stylish, solidly acted prequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's 2008 turbo-charger brings the noise. Luke Goss makes for an appealing, conflicted hero, and the stunning ... read morecinematography, bangin' soundtrack, awesome stunt choreography and brilliant comic delivery by Ving Rhames lifts this well above it's shelf-sitting brethren.

Well for a straight to DVD release this was pretty solid stuff, in fact its just as good as the first in terms of looks, action and quality and kinda surprises me why it never got a proper release. Well that's what I thought at first haha after finishing I realised why it may not... read more have gotten a bigger release, simply its just the same as the first in everything.

Now don't get me wrong its not a poor film, its actually a decent 'Running Man' style flick with good destruction derby sequences and plenty of pointless over the top blood BUT its the same as the first. Nothing new here anywhere I'm afraid right down to bringing back another 'Frankenstein' and using all the same types of cars.

Cast attracted me with Rhames, Goss, Trejo and Bean (great line up) plus there are some nice girls in here too ;) but the film kinda rollercoasters and has good bits and poor bits and then bits which are directly copied from the first. Never did like the computer game angle it uses with the race either, comes across as a WWF show, apart from that if you can accept its basically the first all over then enjoy.

A total blast. One hell of an insane, pulse-pounding and wickedly epic thrill-ride that you cant get enough of. A stylish, brutal, sexy and tremendously entertaining movie. A strong prequel with some juicy characters and solid performances from it's great and energetic cast. Luke Goss is terrific. Sean Bean is explosive. Ving Rhames is brilliant. Danny Trejo is excellent. A knockout action flick that's just as good and if not superior to it's predecessor. It packs loads of explosive chases and brutal fight sequences. A great slice of pure hard-core action move madness. Director, Roel Reine does a fantastic job taking over what Director, Paul W.S Anderson started.

Slightly better paced and plotted than the last one, but Goss is no Statham.

This movie is the second installment of the death race series, thus is the origin of the famous character from the movie 'Frankenstein'. Death Race 2 is pretty much what you'd expect from a direct-to-video prequel. The writing is sub-par and the acting is nothing short of atrocious, but the action isn't bad. While the races and action sequences aren't quite up to the level of the first films, they get the job do... read morene.
Storywise it's largely a rehash of the first film, with only the last 10 minutes trying to suddenly create a bridge between the films. But let's be honest. No one is watching "Death Race 2" for the story. Is there death? Check. Is there racing? Check. The audience for this movie knows what they're getting, and for the most part they'll enjoy it.

    Paul W.S. (Think Violence sells)

The film is directed by Roel Reine, known for his direct-to-DVD sequels, like "The Marine 2" and "The Scorpion King: Rise of the Dead". This futuristic sequel stars Luke Goss as Carl Lucas, a getaway car driver for a crime boss Markus Kane (Sean bean) whose latest job goes predictably awry. Lucas gets sent to Terminal Island, a privately run prison that belongs to businessman Weyland (Ving Rhames).

"Death Race 2" is set in the near future, where life is so cheap that the State will simply sell them off to a corporation to do with as they wish. The result is a "death match" between cons for a TV audience, the brainchild of September Jones, a former Miss Universe turned reporter turned blood prison game show hostess/mastermind (Lauren Cohan). Jones isn't opposed to sleeping her way up the ladder. After shacking up with Weyland, she gets control of Terminal Island. When cons killing each other in a cage start to lose its luster with the viewers and the ratings begin to plummet, Jones come up with the idea for a death race, and thus, the brutal "Death Race" is born.

Luke Goss certainly gives a game effort as the rightfully imprisoned con who shows he has his good side, such as loyalty. Alas, Lucas' loyalty to crime lord Kane isn't exactly reciprocated. As soon as Kane finds out where Lucas is being held, the dastardly bastard immediately orders a hit on our luckless hero so Lucas cannot testify against him. No honor among thieves and all that jazz, it would appear.

By the time the Death Race kicks in, Lucas has a pit crew that includes "Mexican Jew" Goldberg (Danny Trejo) and the friendless nerd Frederick Koehler. Lucas also gets the sexy Katrina (Tanit Phoenix) as his navigator, essentially a hot girl in his car who tells him to turn left, turn right, among other assorted "navigating" duties. (Think Sex Sells)

The rules of the race are the same here as in the Anderson movie - win a certain number of races, and win your freedom. Yes, Weyland has the power to release, say, a serial killer back into the populace if he just so happens to win a certain number of death races. The future, needless to say, looks glum for us regular folks lol.

Sean Bean is amusing as the volatile, dangerous Markus Kane while Lauren Cohan, as September Jones seductively slithers her way through the movie.
