High-concept director Robert Zemeckis applies his usual polish -- helped by an equally adept cast -- for this surprisingly gruesome and extremely funny black comedy. The film begins with narcissistic ... read more read more...actress Madeline (Meryl Streep) stealing the latest in a series of potential fiancées, wimpy plastic surgeon Ernest (Bruce Willis), from her ex-best friend Helen (Goldie Hawn). Depressed and infuriated, Helen suffers a breakdown that lands her in a mental hospital -- in addition to a junk-food bender that seems to triple her weight. When Madeline crosses paths with Helen again many years later, she is horrified to discover her once-chunky rival looking younger, slimmer and more glamorous than ever before. Fearing that Helen will try to steal Ernest back -- and dreading the thought of not having a plastic surgeon at her beck and call -- Madeline solicits the supernatural services of an exotic New Age mystic (Isabella Rossellini), who sells her a potent youth elixir with the stipulation that she follow the dosage instructions to the letter... yeah, right. It appears that Helen owes her sexy comeback to the same magic formula, and the inevitable violent clash between the two well-dressed banshees leads to the realization that both women have become nearly impervious zombies, clawing at each other's throats long after the blood has run cold in their veins. Best remembered for Dick Smith's Oscar-winning makeup effects, which allow the rapidly-rotting undead femmes to toss off witty one-liners with ragged holes blasted through their bodies or spin their heads Exorcist-style. Not all the sight gags work, and Zemeckis' lighthearted treatment of such grotesque material tends to dull the satirical edge, but there are some truly inspired moments of dementia -- particularly a hilarious cameo from Sydney Pollack as a doctor who comes unglued while examining Streep (who has yet to realize she's dead). ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Funny black comedy. Bruce has an affair with Goldie. She plots to kill his wife Meryl. Both women are aging but they discover an immortality potion. Great cast. Great special effects for its day.

Dark comedy, enhanced by FX and the manic performances by the two unlikely leads (whoda thunk of Streep and Hawn as a comic duo??? But they work it!) that asks the age old question: "so you really want to live forever?"

I've never understood why critics dislike this one. It's one of the funniest dark comedies I have ever seen and features Bruce Willis in a role where he never touches a gun, which is a miracle in of itself. I won't describe the plot, but this is dark comedy at it's finest. Highly... read more recommended.

    Funny at times.

A really good dark comedy, and with a cast of famous actors. The special effects look silly for the most part, but it doesn't detract too much from the fun of the movie. If you like dark comedy, see this movie, it's very entertaining.

Quite bizarre but very of its time. Highlights include Meryl Streep with her head on backwards, Bruce Willis's moustache and a hilarious and bizarre performance from a semi-clad Isabella Rossellini. Good old Robert Zemeckis.

"Take care of yourself. You and your body are going to be together a long time."

Death Becomes Her is one of my friend's favorite movies, and she finally convinced me to give it a shot, myself. I can't say that I fell in love with this dark comedy like she did, but it's not a ba... read mored movie.

Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn play two life-long rivals who stumble upon the secret of eternal life, which adds a few complications when they both end up dying. Bruce Willis is the weak pawn who is used by both of them. These aren't the best roles for any of those actors, but each of them is watchable, as always.

I appreciated the sly digs that Death Becomes Her aims at Hollywood's (and really, everyone's) obsession with youth, vanity, and physical beauty, but it didn't match up well with my sense of humor. And the special effects are merely amusing, now (though I'm sure they were outstanding back in '92). For me, this was just average entertainment that I didn't like and didn't dislike. Your impressions may differ.

Great dark, wicked little flick with some excellent effects and good performances from everyone except Willis hehe he was miscast in my opinion. In a lovely 'Tim Burton' style this film jests around the life after death idea in a nice original way much like 'Beetlejuice'. Its not hilarious but it did very well on release and you can understand why, a good nights entertainment if you enjoy the grimly dark side of things :)

Black comedy about Madeline Ashton, a fading actress who steals the fiancé of her longtime rival, Helen Sharp. Years later, Madeline feels compelled to try a miracle cure for aging, after seeing how well her nemesis has aged. At best, the film is a delightful romp, infused with... read more satire and wit. At worst. it's a stridently hyperactive shell of a film, overshadowed by freakish special effects. The problem, is that the movie is both and the story constantly vacillates between these two extremes. Luckily there are enough inspired moments to recommend this well acted, albeit campy film.

In this darker than dark comedy, the actors (Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn) are used as props, part of Bob Zemeckis' nasty, effects-driven satire of our obsession with youth and physical looks. Full Review

Relies way too much on the FX toys, but there's also some really funny stuff scattered about.
