Sophon Sakdapisit

The title is more than a simple gimmick: beyond the obvious titular reference to the experience of movie-watching, the story of this Thai horror opus per se also revolves around the role of cinema. Di... read more read more...rector Sophon Sakdapisit (Shutter, Alone) creates two films - an external narrative and a horror film-within-the-film entitled "Vengeful Spirit." The latter tells the allegedly true story of a grotesquely ugly old woman named Chaba, with frizzy hair and a gangrenous leg, unable to forget the traumatizing experience of losing her child to a young death. To satiate her longing for the departed, she begins systematically abducting and torturing the children of the local village, and eventually gets hung from the ceiling of her hut by the parents who set out to rescue their boys and girls. The external tale pertains to the creepy events that befall Shane (Chantavit Dhanasevi), a projectionist at a washed-up, down-on-its-luck movie theater. Out of financial desperation, he and his boss decide to bootleg the "Vengeful Spirit" movie by recording an illegal projection; not long after, the boss mysteriously disappears, then Shane hears "bumps in the night" and learns that odd, spooky occurrences befell the producers during the first test screening of the movie. Naturally, this only represents the beginning. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Coming Soon offers quite a good spread, except it's plagued by more flaws and loopholes. It's disappointing to see glimmers of something potentially good get buried under a pile of clichéd scare tactics, something the movie does incessantly. Also, it's a bit slow on the pa... read morecing, which takes away a good part of the horror and surprise. On the whole, it has a very promising idea, though sadly the script needed a few more re-writes and the writer himself could do with hiring a different director. This is Sopon Sukdapisit's directorial debut, though it looks like he's better off just doing the writing. The movie has very little of the dreaded tension in Shutter and Alone and some scenes border on being repetitive and annoying.

The scares were uneven, some are good while some are ridiculously funny. The story was quite focused on the main theme and it's kinda getting sluggish in the middle but I guess, someone screaming in front of your face at random times supposed to kept the watchers hooked but that'... read mores such a banal approach and begins to be redundant towards the end.
