A simple brotherly joke goes hilariously awry in director Stewart Wade's zany tale of mistaken sexual identity. Todd's brother Barry wants to help his single sibling out by setting him up on a blind d... read more read more...ate. While all signs lead to a perfect match, it soon becomes obvious that Barry is having a little fun at his brother's expense when the Kelly in question turns out not to be a beautiful woman, but a homosexual male. Upon realizing that they have been duped by Todd's mischievous brother, the unlikely couple soon forms a warm friendship while concocting an elaborate scheme to one-up the unrepentant prankster. When Barry sees Todd and Kelly holding hands soon thereafter, he becomes convinced that his brother is, in fact, gay, and phones the pair's mother to break the news. As Todd's mother begins to see his son's disdain for sports and love of film as clear signs of his homosexuality that she has somehow managed to overlook, she determines to show her son that she will love him no matter what his lifestyle. But Todd's mother isn't the only one who is now convinced that her son is gay, and as suspicions begin to abound in his close-knit social circle, the hapless "homosexual" soon begins to wonder if there isn't some truth to the rumors after all. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I saw this at the Cleveland International Film Festival too. It was very funny. The joke that the guy is not gay but all his family and coworkers think he is, could have gotten old fast. It did bother me at first that no matter how many times he says he is not gay, his mother ... read moredoesn't really listen. But because the characterizations were written so well, it actually works that every time the main guy tries to explain away the misunderstanding everyone else doesn't really hear him.

Wilson Cruz makes this fun but the movie itself is mostly silly.

Funny little movie you dont have to invest too much of your brain power in! You could do a lot worse as far as movies go.

This was a great movie... considering that it was a very low budget film. The acting left much to be desired, but there were a lot of good lines and the storyline was overall endearing.

    Coffee Date
Is an enjoyable light hearted comedy about the boundaries of friendship, sex and human compassion.
Wilson Cruz is at his charming best as a Kelly who has an internet relationship with another man and they have everything in common BUT one thing. Cruz's character i... read mores a gay male with a sexually ambiguous name "Kelly" so Todd whom he is talking to via the internet is not aware that he is male or gay and Todd is straight.
Todd is wonderfully played by Jonathan Bray also very charming in this role.
What happens after they meet for their Coffee Date is both funny and thought provoking.
It's a gay themed movie but anyone can enjoy it because it doesn't have a one viewed perspective on any of the situations.
Jonathan Silverman as Todd's room mate/ brother lends to the comedic flow as well.
My advice is buy it because it's a movie you will watch more than once..

This is suppose to be a comedy, right?
About what? Typical stereotypes, gay bashing, office and family dysfunctionality?
The only saving grace in this piece of trash is the Eye Candy Wilson Cruz. Jonathan Bray does not display 1 ounce of acting ability and appears totally inept a... read morend out of place with every step. Yes, I know that is what he is suppose to be in character but but literally, it seems as if he has to look down to take every step he is even unsure of how to walk. The only thing comedic about this is the fact that it, in itself, is a joke.

Really gay movie. It seemed low budget but it didn't have a bad story to it. How could you not be sure if you gay just because other people think you are? And then he had sex with a man. Even though he wasn't gay. Good movie.

I enjoy this movie. I got tired of him being so homoboic though. Get the hell over it, they will be gay people in the world regardless. Good movie!

Very cute movie. I watched it on Logo ONdemand.. I'm going to buy this one when I have some money..

Jonathan Silverman is funny as hell.. (as always.. )

Wilson Cruz, some funny stuff, some serious gay stuff; one of the better movies for not stereotyping gays (too much). What happends when your best buddy is gay and everyone (except you) is sure you are too? (Mom even moves in and brings a PFLAG buddy, since she's "always known".)

Leaving no cliché unturned, Coffee Date provides cheesy music, chats about gaydar and the obligatory are-you-looking-at-mine? urinal scene. Full Review

A warmhearted tale carried by genuine affection and a charming cast rather than cutting one-liners and turbo-charged plotting. Full Review

It's so full of bland good will, the story goes nowhere in romantic-comedy terms. Full Review

Coffee Date has lots going on, and its message -- there are all kinds of love - is an earnest one. But the script relies too heavily on stock characters and overused plot devices to make any real impact. Full Review

Amid a recent flurry of low-budget independent productions, Coffee Date is a standout with its strongly developed central characters, complex themes and polished look. Full Review

Coffee Date is a film of small objectives, yet still achieves a fully-realized emotional state that's genuine, even in the midst of broad comedy. Full Review
