In this arch sci-fi sex comedy-cum-action extravaganza, a hard-nosed female mercenary helps a hapless yuppie find a new body for his robot girlfriend in the post-industrial wasteland of the American S... read more read more...outhwest. In the year 2017, what little remains of civilization feeds off the scrap heap of 20th century waste, while even casual sex has become a matter of regulations and contracts. Like many other members of the L.A. white-collar elite, Sam Treatwell (David Andrews) takes refuge in a quasi-marriage with his beloved sex robot, Cherry (Pamela Gidley). After a soft-focus, bubbly sexcapade short circuits Cherry's body, Sam considers replacing her, but the shoddy production values of modern robots make it obvious that the vintage appliance is irreplaceable. To put it simply, the guy's in love. The wistful romantic therefore heads out to The Zone, a forbidding no man's land, where he hopes to find a new "chassis" in which to insert Cherry's unique personality chip. To do so, he needs the help of a "tracker," and E. Johnson (Melanie Griffith) is just the woman for the job. The gun-toting, red-headed road warrior leads Sam through a dystopian desert landscape full of psychopaths and opportunists toward their final destination: an abandoned warehouse full of antique androids. Along the way, Sam learns what it's like to interact with a woman who has brains and a heart instead of a microchip. Filmed in 1986, Cherry 2000 didn't receive its limited theatrical release until 1988, the same year star Griffith received an Oscar nomination for her role in Working Girl. Griffith and director Steven de Jarnatt previously worked together on the pilot for the 1980s revival of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Ben Johnson, veteran of many a Hollywood Western, appears as E. Johnson's mentor, Six Finger Jake. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

This is a strange sci-fi movie with a stupid story and so-so actors. I didn't care for it at all.

If you ever meet someone who thinks that it is impossible to suck and blow at the same time, just tell them to watch this movie.

    A classic 80's sci-fi adventure comedy. It's a really special movie. Gosh, it's fun.

Fine sci-fi action pic which owes a considerable debt to the Mad Max movies.

    Kind of a sleeper B-movie 80's sci-fi.

I finally decided to watch this when I heard that studios were considering a modern remake. I love it! The loser main character finds his journey for a new robot girlfriend instead has his eyes opened to a real life. I also enjoyed the Mad Max influence in there too.

When you watch this film now...and realize how close it is to the current World of today (Unemployment, Sex Dolls, Dating) it really makes an impact. It's a fun, cheesy B Movie that gets its strength from the cast.

I was expecting 80s camp, and while there were dashes of it, it wasn't enough to get me to swallow this turkey. Melanie Griffith reads off all her lines with the emotion one provides in rattling off a grocery list- bullets are flying and she's still monotone- barely raising her ... read morevoice.

The rest of the actors in this film aren't too shabby- nothing noteworthy, but really make it more evident that Griffith's acting abilities are not enough to carry the lead of a film. The story, while a promising plot "Man in love with Robot decides to risk his life to reclaim his lost love" quickly devolves into a confusing buffoon of a villain (Lester) and a forced love plot that literally appears out of NOWHERE. As soon as the love interest was created, the ending was completely predictable.

I would never watch this again and if asked, would advise my friends to avoid it- there's much better movie's out there in a similar vein- "HIgh School 1999" or "Hell Comes to Frogtown" certainly come to mind.

Not the greatest movie... but I am drawn to it for some bizare reason. That is where I got the inspiration for my username. ;)

The big combination of the Mad Max Trilogy (or Resident Evil: Extinction) and Blade Runner was what really caught my eye. I don't recognize any of the actors but the theme of the movie seemed to be a lot like a an oddball mix The Road Warrior and Blade Runner. They had tons of si... read moremilarities. Indeed this movie was very silly and inappropiate in some scenes but over all it was so bad that I liked it. I don't know if this is a cult classic or not but to me it is a bit culty. I loved the outfits that Six Finger Jake and E. wore, but most of all I have to say I completely love the architecture of the buildings and Sky Ranch. It was so amazing! It was almost a little Soylent Green with all the girls running around in the little modern Sky Ranch. The furniture was completely amazing! I know I can't base my movie rating on the fact that the furniture was retro but I have to say that it contributed to my to me giving it more stars. A lot of the scenes in the film were really not realistic at all (yes, I am pointing out the part when they are in the plane flying away in the sunset in a little yellow plane kissing) but over all it really was that to painful to watch. Great cult movie to watch on a lazy afternoon when there is nothing left on television.

Crazy kind of futuristic thriller with Griffith's as a femme-fatale robotic killer on the loose.
