Director Roger Michell follows up the hit romantic comedy Notting Hill (1999) with this thought-provoking thriller. Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson star, respectively, as Gavin Banek and Doyle Gibso... read more read more...n, two New York men whose lives become accidentally intertwined in a Good Friday fender bender on the FDR Drive. Late for a crucial appointment, hotshot lawyer Gavin tosses Doyle a blank check and leaves the scene, while Doyle, whose car is inoperable, is late for a court-appointed custody hearing. A recovering alcoholic, Doyle's tardiness doesn't sit well with the judge, who - sick of waiting for Gipson - grants custody to Doyle's ex-wife in Doyle's absence. The situation worsens when it becomes evident that Doyle has an equally important file belonging to Gavin, which proves that an elderly man gave Banek's firm power-of-attorney over his foundation. So begins an escalating war of words and deeds between the two men. Soon, egged on by an associate (Toni Collette), Gavin hires a "fixer" (Dylan Baker) to destroy Doyle's credit, forcing Doyle to fire back with some cunning moves of his own. Changing Lanes co-stars William Hurt, Sydney Pollack, and Toni Collette. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Another great suggestion from Mr. Tim Ryan. If you thought that Sam Jackson made his money by cursing really loudly on camera, check out this movie him actually acting, really really well. Very good movie, wasn't the first time that I have seeing part of this movie but is the first time I've seeing it completely and on Cable. I thought it was a good movie not super good but decent enough to keep you entertained, but what can you expect of Ben Affleck...Samuel L. An attorney in a rush to make a court appointment to file legal papers involving a multi-million dollar trust accidentally collides with an alcoholic insurance salesman, who also is a rush for a court appointment involving the custody of his children. The attorney leaves the scene of the accident and strands the salesman, causing him to miss his custody hearing. During the process of the post-crash discussion, the attorney accidentally drops the papers he needs to present in court. The judge gives him until the end of the day to present the papers and thus begins a cat and mouse game between the proponents. A few questionable actions later on both parties' part, they finally start questioning their actions and their lives. In the end, both come to new understanding of what is important and appear to be set in new ethical and moral directions. Contains mild violence and profanity.

This is one of the first R rated movies I snuck into back in the day, I didn't really think it was good back then. I don't really think it's that good now. Samuel has some good vocal projections.

A decent enough film, a bit contrived and forgettable but inoffensive. Jackson's performance is actually quite good!

Very interesting film with good acting and a decent "everyone can relate to" message. As a nice bonus, there's some nice religious (Catholic) symbolism that is neither too subtle not too obvious.

Doyle Gipson: Money. You... you think I want money? What I want is my morning back. I need you to give my time back to me. Can you give me back my time? Can you give my time back to me? Huh? Can you?

Reasonable entertainment, but definitely a one-watcher. This film has neither the high adrenaline of action flicks nor the suspense and intrigue of most thrillers. A fairly average film as two people with very different problems in their lives cross paths......and throughout the day they make life even more difficult for each other.
