With cameos from more name performers than any dozen films together, (Frank Sinatra and the rat pack, Telly Savalas, Susan Anton, Shirley MacLaine, Jackie Chan, Sid Caesar, Marilu Henner, Catherine Bach, etc., etc., etc.), the movie becomes a pastiche and is executed as though no rehearsals were required, or ever happened. A disparate group of people racing to get a lot of money was first successfully exploited in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, a much better film, and with just as many cameos, in fact. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

I think this is more fun than the original with even more over the top action, fights and lovely cars.
  • March 14, 2007
Normally Hollywood sequels take a financially successful movie and make an inferior sequel. Here they just made a sequel that was EXACTLY the same as the original. Laziness does not begin to describe...
  • February 12, 2007
This was just to see how many people they asked to appear in the movie would actually show up to the set.
  • December 4, 2006
Another crazy car race around America, spacing out some good gags and some jokey lines from all-cast stars. Giant Richard Kiel and martial-artist Jackie Chan are cool and funny as partners of car race in the battle scenes.

Who won the damn thing? Burts age is really starting to show in the hairline (or lack thereof)

These movies were never about the race. They weren't about any semblance of a plot. They were about watching an insanely famous cast of actors getting together to have a good time, and inviting you to watch. There's the required number of stunts and action scenes in both movies, ... read moreand a healthy dose of flashy cars, but no one remembers these movies for any of that. If there ever really was a completed script for either of these movies, I'd be beyond shocked. You KNOW that most everything that happened in this movie was improvised on the spot. It's the freewheeling spirit that makes these movies so fun to watch to this day.
In fact, there's BARELY a race in this movie at all. Some people may criticize that, but I look at it as the filmmakers took note of what people liked about the first movie, and gave them even more of it this time, so that leaves less room for actual racing. There's still a good number of auto stunts and crashes, and a big brawl scene so Jackie Chan can show of his fighting skills.
The movie relies on the charm of its stars, and they all have more than enough of that to go around. Burt Reynolds made this the last of his "good ol' boy car chase" movies. Dom DeLuise seems to be having the most fun of the whole cast. Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. were effortless pros who obviously loved acting against each other. Jamie Far was obviously relishing playing someone other than Klinger. We also get a mob backstory that is loaded with actors who appeared in The Godfather movies, and they seemed to enjoy spoofing themselves. The weakest "perfromances" come from the women in the cast, who simply seemed to lack the knack for improvisation, which like I said, was key to the fun of these movies. Shirley MacLaine and Marilu Henner just kind of struggle through the movie. Susan Anton and Catherine Bach...well let's just say that they weren't hired for their acting skills.
This is what I like to call a "so bad, it's great" movie, adn a nice way to reminice the 80's. Just empty your brain, sit back, and enjoy the fun that was being had while making the movie. Be sure to watch the credits.

One of those sequels that is almost the same if not better then the original. Featuring alot of the same cast with a few new stars but hilarious all the same.
  • October 11, 2007
The first is a legend but you cannot miss this despite the retro feel.
  • May 18, 2010
Shameless sequel to the first shameless ensemble comedy. It's fun, but shallow. It's fun to watch some of these actors working outside their element, but otherwise I would avoid it.
  • September 26, 2009
This whole film is so ridiculous, I could hardly enjoy it b/c I couldnt help but wonder how cool a race like this really would be, w/o all the stupid highjinx and foolishness.

A lazy, sloppily made sequel that doesn't play quite as badly now as it did in 1984. Besides, it's hard to hate a movie that casts Jim Nabors as Homer Lyle.

Feels like home movie footage of a celebrity barbecue that you weren't invited to.
