Well meaning (hey, it's about a saint!) but ultimately deeply flawed telling of St.Francis done up as a 60's counterculture agent provacateur. Only missing, hey wait, it's here too, a Donovon soundtrack. Peace. love. flowers and God, man. And uber long, too. A great sleep aid.

This is the MOST aesthetically beautiful movie I've EVER seen from the scenery shots to the actors -- Zeffierelli's FINEST -- Even better than Romeo and Juliet which came out immediately before this -- Alec Guiness turns in a WONDERFUL Pope and the other acting is stupendous -- T... read more

Stunning visual metaphors, more a poem than a biography, succeeding brilliantly in juxtaposing symbols of worldly riches with those of spiritual riches. Graham Faulkner is convincing with Alec Guinness superb.

This is certainly not a quickly paced film, at two plus hours this movie gets very tedious. On the plus side, the sumptuous production is remarkable. The score is good but it doesn't stand out. A little more editing would have helped. I found it hard to sit through.

I love movies that tell good stories about God and faith, but this film was really cheesy and bland. Even worse, it never even gave me a coherent sense of what St. Francis ultimately accomplished.

I LOVE this movie!!! Essentially, it is about Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Claire who founded the Poor Claires.

The redemption of a medieval Crusader who would become St. Francis of Assisi is beautifully brought to the screen in this excellent Franco Zefferelli production. The outstanding acting, cinematography, and soundtrack render not only the time of Francesco DiBernadone, but also th... read more

I was very confused by what was actually happening at the begining of the film yet it still brought up a lot of emotions. Good as a movie but maybe not best as showing the life of St. Francis as I go to a college named after him that even has a dowm named after the 'Leading Lady'... read more

When the nuns showed us this movie at Catholic school, did they not fully realize what a psychedelic freakout it is? No wonder I lapsed into pagan tree-hugging and nature worship!

And this is certainly the second best saint movie. It is marvelously well filmed and acted, even if a trifle on the flower-child side of things.
Critic Reviews
The most serious problem with this film is its softness, that sentimentality Zeffirelli is often accused of.
It is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. Just about any frame of the film, blown up, could make a beautiful poster for the film. Full Review
beautiful and nicely framed photography from northern Italy...not enough to overcome an inane script, inept acting, and Donovan's syrupy music Full Review
Presents an inspiring and edifying portrait of St. Francis's spiritual practice of devotion and his humble life of service. Full Review
