When she wakes up, Hope discovers she was abducted in the night and is trapped inside a coffin-like wooden box that's been buried beneath the ground. When she's dug up and released, Hope learns she's being held captive by a man with no name (Eric Colvin) living in the woods who then ties her to a tree and gives her a razor she can use to free herself -- though she won't be able to do so without severely scarring herself. After a failed break for freedom, Hope realizes her only chance for survival is to bend to the will of her captor, though her desire is largely fueled by a need to know what's become of her daughter. Two months later, Hope has learned more than she ever wanted to know about primitive life with her fearsome master when she's joined by a new victim, a frightened teenage girl (Abbey Stirling). Broken was the fourth feature from director Adam Mason and his first in collaboration with co-director Simon Boyes, who made his feature debut with this movie. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Brutal stuff, and more developed than I expected it to be. Still has many earmarks of a first feature and amateurism. I'm guessing these guys have some shocking stuff in their future.

Boring horror film with shitty characters. I've never been so irritated by the people on screen. When I checked the display on the DVD it said I had 42 mins left and I prayed that this had a 41 1/2 min credit roll. No such luck, just boredom and irritation. And for those who ... read morebelieved this to be a true story, the first thing the writer/director says on his commentary track is that it's all lies, like he's the first one to think of promoting fiction as truth. About as entertaining as being forced at gunpoint to masturbate to naked pictures of you mother. Only reason it doesn't get zero (or half a star on Flixster) is some decent gore.

The best of this movie are the first 15 minutes then goes downhill into a monotonous surviving game that is for moments boring. Gore and cruelty sequences are well done worth a check for torture fans.

Quite the gory, nasty film when allowed. By far one of the best openings in horror cinema. The smoothness and pace of the film plummet thereafter, however. The obvious budget restraint cuts upon a lot, so there's limited actors and limited overall quality. If you've the patience ... read moreto sit through sympathy-for-the-hostage and if low budget doesn't get to you, you'll appreciate the commendable make-up and par acting.

This was good, but could have been a little better. And there were things that would or would not have happened. Like the razor blade in her stomach--which reminds me of Jigsaw. The more she moved, the more it would have cut her inside. And her broken leg would have turned ou... read moret much, much worse. Of course if she had knowledge of herbs, she would have known how to use them against him, and for herself, if they were all growing nearby--or perhaps persuaded him into bringing their seeds, and beginning a harvest.
The impression I got from the trailer was that her daughter was much older. The screaming girl was very annoying before her tongue was cut out--I thought he would have done something worse to her.
Why did the woman hesitate to kill him when she had the chance? Seducing him was a foolish mistake.
In the end she should have known better and used her head. She should have tried to think like the man when she saw her daughter in the shed, and expected the unexpected.
I would love to do some research here, to find out more about what really happened. Who? Where? When? How many people did he kill? Were there really any survivors? But I wouldn't know where to start.

horrible! i'm sick and tired of these sadistic movies that aren't even good. when will people learn. it also dragged on and i had to fast forward it because i was bored. but there was some ok gore.

ok so i came into this thinking it was gonna be one of the most disuirbing and shocking films i have ever seen, and i was very disapointed! yes granted there were great gore scenes, sum that even made me wince but the acting was terrible so much so i couldnt even make it throught... read more the whole movie, i only gave it 2 1/2 stars for the simple fact of the good gore scenes

I would have liked this film a bit more if they bothered to give us even the slightest clue how a single mother goes from the safety of her urban apartment to the wilds of some forest and the clutches of a madman in a single scene change.

not such good acting and kinda cheap filming but the story is pretty good. And all true it really happened.
