Their platonic relationship explodes into a physical one, but eventually the two are separated when their job comes to an end. Although the two follow different life paths -- one becoming a father of two and the other marrying into a successful business -- they have a reunion years later. Each is affected profoundly by the rekindling of their old feelings for each other. Those feelings lead each to consider what continuing their hidden relationship would cost them. Excellent film. One of those films that I'll admit I wanted to hate, because of the controversial topic, but I can't...it is great. Everything about it is wonderful; the story, characters, the acting, the music, the direction. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent performances from ... read moreLedger, Gyllenhaal, Williams, and Hathaway. Nominated for 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor, this is a must see.

Brokeback Mountain is a genius film that is controversial, dramatic, and is one of the best romantic films of all time. The storyline is about two men who meet during a job on Brokeback Mountain, and they fall in love but are afraid to admit it to the world. The plot is not you... read morer typical romance film, this is actually the first romantic drama I have seen that focuses completely on two homosexuals, and although I am not homosexual, I know many and they feel just as bad as these two men, how they afraid to show their true feelings to the world because of how the world views them, and I thing Ang lee created a movie that really can teach people a lesson about how they feel, and how we should treat them normally if they want to be treated normal, like these two men. The cast consists of many actors, but it mainly is Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhal, and although heath Legers best performance is The Joker in The Dark knight, this is some of the greatest dramatic performances I have ever seen in film, and they were great. Ang Lee has not created many good movies, but here he has created a pur masterpiece andby far his best work, and I think this deserved Best Picture over Crash by far. Brokeback Mountain is a movie that most people cannot relate to and so they dislike it because it is about two gay men, eben at first i thought it would be a stupid film, but I think the fact that people don't like it because they are gay shows how ignorant they some people are, because a great film like this is hardly ever seen.

Outstanding. There's no other way to describe it. Phenomonal and absolutely heartbreaking. A great love story! A must see!

A drama with a beautifully scripted story. All the negativity this film gets is just heartbreaking. Yes, it's about a gay relationship, but Ledger and Gylenhaal make it seem so real from trhe start to the end. Both men find women that bond with, but the love they express for each... read more other is more deeply than any other they could be offered. This film easily could've and should have won best picture.

A little overrated. But still a good movie. A good story. Some good acting. Average directing. Maybe a little too long. Jake Gyllenhaal is allright...

A woebegone tale of two ill fated lovers marched into a day and age that is not only unaccepting, but plainly bitter and one sided. Great performances by Ledger, Williams, and Hathaway as each was a caricature of unavailable or blind (even star crossed) love. Meanwhile Gyllenhaal... read more's character wanted nothing less than complete and total happiness, to be who he truly was, and that performance came with a crystal clear message. Grand efforts on all parts.

"Brokeback Mountain" features acting of the highest caliber. Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway and especially Michelle Williams give some tremendous performances. "Brokeback Mountain" is not only a showcase for brilliant acting and Ang Lee's exquisitely detailed direct... read moreion, but as a portrait of masculinity, homosexuality and the ever changing 60s/70s. This is a fine motion picture in every respect.

An absolute jewel to kick off 2006. In many ways, Brokeback marked the year's turn towards intelligent 'issue' films, something that has been sorely missing from Hollywood for years. Indeed, the very style and nature of this affecting love story evokes the integrity of 70s dramas... read more such as Dog Day Afternoon and Chinatown, films that raised 'hot topics' not for the point of explotation, but with sensitive subjectivity. Brokeback is superbly directed by Ang Lee, granting incredibly evocative imagery, mostly from nature itself, and convinces us of the time period passed with ease. Ledger astonishes, though, with by miles his career-best performance, playing a man so embittered by life that he has almost totally retreated into himself, very occaisonally shedding light on his thoughts and feelings with absolute believability. NOT a 'gay movie' with regards to what that normally entails, BM instead paints a tragically romantic picture for everyone to experience.

Phew... Some more boring stuff, but relatively bearable than 'A Single Man'. The awful way Heath Ledger speaks only made it worse for me. Maybe his character required to be that way, but still. 3.5/10.

Like all great love stories, Ang Lee's is one of tragic romance, strongly acted by Heath Ledger as the most buttoned-up of cowboys, and Michelle Williams as his betrayed and enraged wife. Full Review

The movie has a universal quality because it tells a story of unfulfilled lives and roots it in the well-observed specifics of a vanishing Western culture.
