This might feature a mostly female cast and involve the road to a wedding as the main plot, but this is most certainly not a chick flick. It is instead a very funny, terrifically acted story about female companionship, and all the wacky shenanigans that can happen when a diverse... read more bunch of women get together to try to make a friend's special day very special. It's also quite vulgar, but not overbearingly so.

The film follows Annie, whose life is not going well. She used to have her own bakery, but the recession killed that, so she's near broke, working a dead end job, has a crappy car, an awkward living situation, and an equally awkward romantic life. When her childhood best friend Lillian announces her engagement and makes her the maid of honor, Annie finds her life getting even more complicated and messy, especially when she starts butting heads with Helen- Lillian's new best friend and the mother of all bridesmaidzillas.

When I first heard about this film, I shrugged it off as being The Hangover, but with women, and didn't have much high hopes for it. As I began to hear more about it, I started to change my mind. Now that I've seen it, I'm so glad I gave it a chance. It's gotten so much buzz, a lot of it earned, but even though this isn't that great or the masterpiece a lot of people make it out to be, it's still a really good and highly entertaining piece of work.

I've enjoyed Kristen Wiig for a few years now, but this one really seals the deal for her being a comedic force that needs to be reckoned with. She and her co-write deliver a sharp and witty script, and she really shows her range and chops here as Annie, doing a wonderful job being drunk, playing a sad sack, and selling the more dramatic and emotional parts of the story as well. Yes, that;s right, the film isn't all outrageousness and raunch. It tries pulling at the heart as well, and mostly succeeds there, too.

Wiig is great, but it's some of the supporters who really steal the show here, especially Melissa McCarthy as Megan- the groom's sister who is basically the Zach Galifianakis here, and Jon Hamm as Ted- Annie's amazingly sleazy friend with benefits. Chris O'Dowd is good as a friendly cop who rather manages to avoid most rom com cliches, and I just really appreciated the amazing chemistry between all of the women. The really sell their relationships here.

The film is quite good, but, as I alluded to, it's not perfect, and even a tad overrated. For one thing, it's overlong and just drags on with just a whiff of fumes by the time the end credits roll. The film starts to take chances and I was hoping it would surprise me and be original, but no, it basically ends how you figure it will. I was surprised though that it didn't at times play out like I thought it would, even though it does so by the end. Also, it's not nearly as raunchy and envelope pushing as it could have been (or that I was anticipating). It's rather awkward and uncomfortable on occasion, but that's actually a pro, not a con, even though it makes some of it difficult to sit through.

All in all, this is a very funny, very strong effort that set a lot of things right, but unfortunately doesn't have enough steam to keep it flying high all the way through. You should see it though, and here's to hoping that Wiig will both pen and star in more films to come.

Good comedy - just the scene in the bridal shop alone is worth watching it for, I couldn't stop laughing, and I'm not someone who generally laughs hysterically during a movie. On the downside, it is a little too long, and bits of it don't work, but it's still vastly superior to ... read moremany chick flicks. Cast are good - Melissa McCarthy is a bit gross here (I really do like her, don't get me wrong), but the character is icky - I think she is meant to be mind you! Rose Byrne didn't overly convince me either - she is also a bit yucky here. (Again, I don't mind her, but not convinced this is her best role). Maya Rudolph is a little meh. Kristen Wiig steals the show here as Annie. Really the most pathetic female rom com lead in a while - would feel sorry for her if I wasn't so busy cringing at some of the stuff she does! Surprisingly, Chris O'Dowd makes a decent romantic lead in a dorky kind of way and Jill Clayburgh works well as Annie's mum. They really look a bit alike too!
Worth a look, might even be a chick flick you can get a guy to watch with you!

I surprisingly found this a lot funnier than I expected despite all the good reviews. There are plenty of very funny scenes with a funny cast assembled. It also has a slight feel-good factor to it by the end as well with out being to Rom-comy!

I use to claim this as one of the best comedies of 2011, but the way too high critical acclaim and immense popularity has made it quite overrated. I mean come on, Best Original Screenplay and Supporting Actress nominees for the Oscars? Puh-lease.

The best comedies take the commonplace, everyday things and poke fun at them. With Bridesmaids, you have the rituals of an upcoming wedding - something that somehow resonates deep within a woman's psyche - as fodder for Kristen Wiig's sharp witted screenplay.

If the upcoming ... read moreevent was the entire focus of the film it would probably fall into the morass of so many Adam Sandler type films - comedy without a purpose - but here there is a much deeper story as Wiig's character spirals downward, repeatedly getting her tail kicked by life. This tale would seem to be at odds with the comic premise, however here it gives the film depth and makes the jokes and skits seem natural and unforced (for the most part), instead of the be all, end all, point of the film. It also gives the opportunity to examine life choices and goals from a woman's perspective, and while some of the characters are archtypes, they still provide ample opportunities to look inside what women want.

Wiig's performance here is a strong one, though some of her confrontational scenes seem a bit too "in your face", but surely you can't deny her comic timing and chops. There is a long extended scene that occurs during an airplane flight that shows off Wiig's comic abilities as both a writer and comedian - it is almost worth the price of admission by itself.

But the film isn't all Wiig, as there are strong supporting players as well, from Rose Byrne's portrayal of the lonely rich girl, to a tour de force by Melissa McCarthy as the female oddball, echoing Galifanikas in The Hangover films.

There are some incongruities here, as the start of the film where Wiig spends the night with her "F**K buddy" and then in the morning is asked to leave - which she does on foot... umm, she walked there? Or did he pick her up and then couldn't be bothered to offer her a ride home (he couldn't be that callous could he? I mean, she was not supposed to have spent the night, so ... he was going to kick her out in the middle of the night - yeah, thanks for the honey, hope you don't get mugged while walking home...).
But that's just nit-picking, and besides, it allows for a very funny exit scene with Wiig riding atop an electronic gate.

The film is a bit raw and potty mouthed, but really, the grosser moments are within the bounds of the film's tenor and not there for gross out effect. Especially funny is when one of the bridesmaids yells at her kids to "watch your F**King language!"

Of course as humor is so subjective, there are jokes that work and one's that, for me anyway, didn't. I felt that the one-upmanship that took place at the engagement dinner was initially funny, but went on a bit too long, and the extended scene where Wiig tries to get the help of her maybe boyfriend police officer by performing illegal driving acts was absurd and trying too hard - though I did smile at the lowrider pass.

Overall there is the story of a real person with real, raw feelings (though I couldn't help but think that Wiig's character forgot that the wedding ritual was all about her friend and not about Wiig - which was eventually pointed out by said friend). That there happened to be a very funny film built around Wiig's character is what gives the film its strength - a very solid effort.

This movie could be considered the female equivalent of "The Hangover". That might not be a fair comparison, since it isn't nearly as good. "Bridesmaids", is however, a very worthwhile comedy. There are some borderline "chick-flick" scenes that I can do without. That said, wh... read moreen the movie focuses on it's raunchy and inappropriate sense of humor, it more than succeeds. There are moments that had me laughing very hard, and that's all that you should ask for from one of these movies.

The movie won't change your life or grab a fistful of Oscar nominations come next winter. But it will make you laugh, hard and often, and it proves that sometimes girls just want to have fun. Full Review
