An arrogant scientist brings his fiancée back from the dead in this vintage cult horror film. Dr. Bill Cortner (Jason Evers, here billed as Herb Evers) performs medical experiments despite the trepida... read more read more...tion of his surgeon father (Bruce Brighton); transplantation is Bill's main area of interest, but he's also had some success using electric shock to restore life to the recently deceased. When Bill causes a car crash that decapitates his fiancée, Jan Compton (Virginia Leith), he spirits her head off to his secret laboratory and keeps it alive with the help of an experimental new serum. Soon, the doctor begins scouring the dives, strip clubs, and suburban streets for an attractive woman whose body he can steal to restore his lady love to her full, ambulatory glory. Meanwhile, back at the lab, Jan grows to hate Bill for refusing to let her die. Developing telepathic powers that allow her to communicate with one of Bill's failed experiments -- a snarling creature kept locked up under the stairs -- she begins to plot her revenge. Things come to a head when Bill returns to the lab with his intended victim: a bitter, disfigured, man-hating figure model (Adele Lamont). The promotional tagline for The Brain That Wouldn't Die was "Alive...without a body...fed by an unspeakable horror from hell!" The film helped provide the inspiration for '80s horror/comedy director Frank Henenlotter's Frankenhooker and Basket Case 2. The former includes a decapitated woman restored to life by her lover, while the latter features both a cameo from Brain star Jason Evers and another character who looks like the twin brother of the monster under the stairs. ~ Brian J. Of all the movies I've been seeing lately of this type that had any potential of being a classic, I think The Brain That Wouldn't Die probably has the most potential. If they had shifted the story around a bit instead of just playing all of the scenes in order, it could have been... read more more interesting. For instance, if the girlfriend was already a head in a pan at the beginning of the movie, it would have given the mad scientist a stronger motivation throughout the film. Or maybe I'm just overthinking things here. Yes, it's poorly acted, constructed and just really isn't very good at all, but there's a spark of creativity here that I thought could have been made better under different circumstances and with the right people behind it. Maybe that's just me. It's also interesting to note that the cut of the movie I saw is the uncut version, which features a few extra shots of a cat fight and a couple of gore shots that were taboo at the time and subsequently cut from the movie. Overall, it's intriguing, but fails to really capture the imagination displayed on its wonderful poster.

The Brain That Wouldn't Die is a perfect example of what a B-Movie is: Boring script, slow pacing, and actors that make Tommy Wiseau look good. Now, the film is important to those that have loves for anything science fiction related, but not much else. Now, do I recommend this fi... read morelm? Only if you either love B-movies, sci-fi. For the rest of you, I suggest you watch the film on the show called: Elvira's Movie Macabre. It makes the film a little less painful.

I thought this was a very cool mad scientist horror movie, but then they kept playing on TV all the time, and I got annoyed with it. Anyway, the story is good, and the ending is great, but they could have better actors. Overall a good movie, it reminds you of the fifties horror... read more movies.

    Once again...
If it wasn't for Elvira's intermissions and asides, there would be no reason for sitting through this.
I fun idea...but cheaply made, badly paced, hammily acted and about an hour too long.

The video picture that I saw for this movie actually shows the mutant that is withheld until the very end of the movie. That's gotta be the first time I ever saw a spoiler right there on the box cover. Anyway, I think what I like most about this movie is it's seriousness. Lessons learned:

    1. Don't keep your fiance's severed head alive in the laboratory.

    2. Don't keep failed experiments (i.e. mutant cyclops-looking monsters) locked in the closet.

    3. When making a horror film, budget more than $36.50 for special effects.

The moving story of a doctor, a tragically maimed girl, a disembodied head kept alive in a cake pan, and a mutant in a closet. If that doesn't wet your whistle nothing will.
  • August 20, 2007
If you've ever seen "Frankenhooker" or "The Man with Two Brains", this will seem like a much poorer, lower-budget, black and white version of the same thing.
It was obviously the film that inspired them though and is a nice example of trashy early 60s B movies even if it is a bi... read moret slow and silly. There's a bit of gore at the end too.

Unbelievably silly, with a far-stretched joke.
  • May 10, 2012
One crazy, cheesy movie. I laughed at some of the really cheesy parts, too.
The plot is weird: A scientist's girlfriend gets decapitated in a car accident, so he hooks her head up to a machine while he looks for a nice body to cut off and use for his girlfriend's head. Hmmm.
Anyw... read moreay, it's a very cheesy movie. There's this one part where this telepathic monster goes and kills this guy and just strangles him, but the kill looks so...unrealistic. It's just so cheesy, makes me laugh at some parts.
And once again, thank you for MST3K, which shows the cheesiest movies and makes them great again. Yet another old piece of crap I saw from the show.
Very crappy movie, as you can see. So maybe if you consider watching it, watch the MST3K version.

One of the campiest of all the tacky, cheapo horror films. This is so entertainingly bad, that's it's good. A true guilty pleasure!
