When speaking of Laurel and Hardy's first feature film Pardon Us, Stan Laurel described it as "a three-story building on a one-story base"-in other words, a 2-reeler stretched and bloated into 6 reels... read more read more.... Much the same could be said of Blake Edwards's Blind Date, though one wonders if Stan Laurel could have even gotten two reels out of its wafer-thin premise. At the outset, yuppie Bruce Willis is warned not to let his blind date, southern belle Kim Basinger, drink anything stronger than lemonade. So what does Willis do the first chance he gets? That's right, kids; he plies poor Basinger with champagne. And then he wonders why his life rapidly goes to hell in a handbasket. In his first starring movie role, Bruce Willis manages to find all sorts of nuances in his one-note role, while Kim Basinger is very funny when she's blotto-at least, for the first five minutes or so. John Laroquette costars as a character straight out of a 1920s bedroom farce; he's also pretty good, even though his dialogue is numbingly unamusing. Blake Edwards is famous for his ability to make a lot out of a little...but there has to be a limit somewhere. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

One of the funniest films of the 80s, this comedy about a blind date going awry enjoys embarrassing situations for its protagonist and piles one after the other until you can't take it anymore. Director Edwards already delivered a similar film with his classic "What's up, doc", r... read moreecycling a few of the ideas here, but still creating another riot of confusion, chaos and insane characters. The chemistry between Willis and Basinger is great and even though the film reeks of the 80s in every second, it's still fun to revisit over and over again.

In Blind Date, Walter Davis(Bruce Willis) goes on an arranged night-out,with Nadia Gates,(Kim Basinger), that starts off well but turns very, very ugly when alcohol gets into the mix. Don't worry though... this is a romantic comedy so you should be able to turn off your brain and... read more watch the silliness unfold until you get to the happy ending.

A homage to the classic screwball comedies that lacks charm and needed to be shortened. some parts are hysterically funny though.

    Pretty dumb movie
  • December 26, 2006
Run of the mill slapstick farce that tries far too hard. A wholly unconvincing romantic comedy in which Bruce Willis is reasonably likeable, but Kim Basinger isn't.

Kim Basinger is cute and fun until alcholol hits her throat, at which point she becomes mad, bad and dangerous to know.

"Blind Date" is a very funny slapstick comedy starring Bruce Willis as Walter Davis, a hard working guy who needs a date to impress a Japanese client. His brother sets him up with Nadia Gates, (played by Kim Basinger). He gives him one word of warning about Nadia: don't let her g... read moreet drunk, or she'll lose control. Things seem to be progressing nicely until Nadia's psychotic ex boy-friend David (John Larroquette) shows up hell bent on destroying Willis. Things get even more complicated when despite warnings not to get her drunk, Walter buys her champagne causing a night of slap-stick heavy consequences and Walter finds his whole life crashing down on him.

This movie is hilarious!!! I couldn't stop laughing through this whole movie. Bruce Willis and John Larroquette's fight scenes were the funniest ever. Kim Basinger is funny too with her drunk antics that made this movie a delightful comedy. Loved it. :)

Comic possibilities are everywhere in Blind Date, and the tireless Mr. Edwards leaves none of them unexploited. Full Review

This is the kind of movie that serves as a reminder that comedy is agonizingly difficult when it works, and even more trouble when it doesn't. Full Review

What this movie needs is Cybill Shepherd playing hard to get. Or anybody playing hard to get. Full Review

Hir or miss, but a couple of the gags that do hit are screamingly funny. A bit involving Graham Stark's butler and a doberman had me howling uncontrollably.

Blind Date is a funny movie, but only in parts. As a Sunday afternoon Superstation timewaster, it'll do the job every bit as well as an episode of Moonlighting or Night Court. Full Review
