Paul Reubens's followup to the box-office hit Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is just as outrageous and cartoonish, though not as good. This time, child-man Pee-Wee runs a colorful farm, chock full of talking... read more read more... animals and outsized produce. On the morning after a tornado of Wizard of Oz dimensions, Pee-Wee awakens to discover that a travelling circus has been deposited in his back yard. Befriended by circus owner Kris Kristofferson, Pee-Wee takes an acrobatic job, hoping to impress lovely trapeze artist Valeria Golino--thereby incurring the jealous rage of his hometown sweetie Penelope Ann Miller. When the circus is faced with bankruptcy, Pee-Wee comes up with a brilliant idea: why not stage a three-ring spectacular celebrating the wonders of agriculture? A partial takeoff of such earlier sawdust-trail flicks as Martin and Lewis' Three Ring Circus and Disney's Toby Tyler, Big Top Pee-Wee is generally entertaining, but goes off in too many directions at once, leaving a lot of loose plot ends and underdeveloped characters. Also, Pee-Wee's overactive libido (at least in this film!) is not all that suitable for his younger fans. Even so, there are plenty of hilarious set-pieces. Big Top Pee-Wee was produced and cowritten by Paul Reubens. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Not my favorite Pee-Wee, that's for sure. Even though Valeria is a babe, watching Pee-Wee make out with her is creepy. I miss him being my a-sexual friend. The story is a good one, who doesn't want to join the circus?!

This movie was a horrible follow up to the awesome original Pee-wee movie. If only they could have got Burton back to direct it... of course he was busy making other great movies like Beetlejuice. This one has a ridiculous story and doesn't feel in touch with what you've gotten... read more to know of Pee-Wee's world. I hated it.

Not the most terrific sequel, but Paul Reubens can be fun at times.

I really dug this flick as a kid. Paul Rubens had some misfortunes off screen but he did manage to bring a couple real good kid flicks out.
Not as good as Big Adventure but still had a lot of magic and a good cast.

Sooooooooooooooooooooooo bad. What happened to our beloved Pee wee's big adventure?
  • June 7, 2007
The magic and fantasy of Pee-Wee is lost in this sequel. It's gross to see Pee-Wee fall in love with a woman. There aren't any wacky misadventures or gadgets to be seen. Putting Pee-Wee amongst circus folks makes him less unique. A disappointment. It's the only Pee-Wee DVD I won'... read moret add to my collection.

In this sequel to the classic Big Adventure film Pee Wee (for some reason) decides to move to a dusty old town that looks like a 1947 time-capsule and is inhabited by hateful, old farts. After a violent storm one night the circus (for some reason) washes up on his farm and from t... read morehere the film just kind of shifts into idle and coasts blandly until the end, in a series of generic circus hi-jinks and weird romantic encounters.
Frankly the films' problems exist at the script level. The whole concept was poorly thought out and executed. In Big Adventure Pee Wee's motivation was simple but effective; to get back his bike. The straight-forward premise then allowed the character to be taken from one place to another in fairly rapid succession, all the while letting each unique situation show a different side of him. The road story was also perfect for quickly establishing what Pee Wee is all about; a grown man who cherishes a bicycle more than anything else in his life. It's sweet, it's something we can relate to in one way or another, but it's also very bizarre. Pee Wee is all of those things.
Big Top doesn't take him anywhere, it only thrusts him awkwardly into a love story that is completely unwarranted given his emphatic rejections of Dottie in the first movie. "I like you, Dottie, LIKE!... I'm a loner, Dottie. A rebel."
So whoever decided it would be a brilliant idea to build an entire narrative around Pee Wee Herman having a love-life was totally missing the point of the character.

Not as much funny as the first, but still just as awesome. :)
  • September 1, 2008
Everything you would expect: ridiculous, weird, and mostly unfunny. I'd rather watch just a regular episode of PeeWee's Playhouse anyday.

Pee-Wee is still Pee-Wee, and at least there is that to keep this film from being too bad...but it lacks the same level of quality that was put into "The Pee-Wee Herman Show" (both the original and the new version), "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure", or "Pee-Wee's Playhouse". All the ot... read moreher Pee-Wee stuff is so much fun, with it's unique humor and hilarious gags and running jokes. This was made during the height of the TV series, so I'm not sure what went wrong...but seeing Pee-Wee hanging out with a talking pig and joining the circus isn't nearly as fun as it should be. The pacing is off or something. Having a love story where Pee-Wee is after someone seems really out of character too, and it doesn't work with the whole manchild thing at all. The ending is oddly boring and abrupt. Definitely the weakest link in the Pee-Wee canon.

Pee-wee's always funny, but Randal Kleiser doesn't know what to do with him.

Fun for children, embarrassing for adults, especially now knowing Pee-Wee's illegal indulgences.

Lacks the zeal and oddball energy of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, but fans (and kids) should find enough to enjoy.
