Ryuhei Matsuda, Masanobu Ando, Kenichi Endo, Ryo Ishibashi, Renji Ishibashi

Two men imprisoned for seperate murders find their fates mortally intertwined in cult director Takashi Miike's homoerotic meditation on the societal flaws of modern-day Japan. Jun (Ryuhei Matsuda) is ... read more read more...an effiminate gay bar employee who, after being sexually assaulted by a customer, brutally murdered his attacker in a fit of rage. Shiro (Masanobu Ando) is a brutish, heavily-tattooed thug whose combative nature has resulted in too many run-ins with the law to count. When both men are imprisoned for murder, Shiro's undeniable charisma and intensity draws Jun like a moth to the flame. As the two men learn from behind bars to open up and accept one and other for who they really are, a warm bond begins to grow that finds each man confiding his innermost secrets with the other and Shiro taking an almost paternal interest in his fragile young friend. When a confrontation erupts in the common area of the prison and one inmate strangles another to death, the guards are shocked to find Jun sitting on Shiro's lifeless body. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A series of disjointed and chaotic flashbacks tells a story of intimacy in jail. 2 inmates convicted of murder arrive the same day and through a number of interviews with other cellmates, the story slowly reveals the truth behind a mysterious death involving one of the convicted... read more.

Miike directs one of his most arthouse films to date which may put off fans of his previous work such as Audition, Ichi The Killer or even his far-left films to include Gozu and Izo. If you have the type of disposition where you need things presented in ABC order you're going to be extremely frustrated. Still well done.

Watch what Miike can do with no budget and tons of creativity. I certainly don't think I would've enjoyed this story as much if told by any other director. And another great Matsuda performance.

The opening minutes of this film tell the viewer both that it is not going to be a realistic film and that is going to be philosophical, rich in metaphor, and a bit pretentious. The visual imagery of this quite surreal and expressionistic movie is striking. The performances are t... read moreop notch. The story is strange and occasionally preposterous but quite fascinating. This is one of those rare movies in which nonlinear storytelling works brilliantly. I strongly recommend this unique movie.

A surreal tale of love, murder, and transcendence about two troubled young men imprisoned for the same crime.

Miike's gone on the record as saying that this is his masterpiece, and I'm not sure if I got everything out of it on the first pass that I should. I'd like to give it another look, because it has an ambitious style of narrative and low-key settings that are visually interesting,... read more but I still felt like I wasn't quite on the same page as he meant me to be.

The story of two lovers in a boys detention center, one of whom is murdered and the ensuing quest for the truth, the story is told in a less than linear style that is both interesting to watch, but challenging as a viewer to keep track of what's going on.

I'd definitely say give this a look, possibly more than one. I may adjust my rating accordingly if I get a chance to go back to this one.

Really this is a 2.5 stars. I don't like the format this was made. I think the story would have had more of an impact if the film was made in a more traditional way. The story of 2 young murders in a detention center. Are they lovers? One is found dead, who did it? I think the be... read morest part of the movie was the body tattoos. Is that shallow? This is a compelling movie. The Brechtian elements are refreshing and interesting. The mise-en-scene and story telling in general is very sharp. Recommended.

Takashi Miike considers, "Big Bang Love: A Juvenile Love Story of 4.6 Billion Years", his masterpiece, and while certainly his most intellectually and aeshetically challenging work to date, it falls a tad short, of it's epic aspirations.

For a "lo...(read more)ve story" there... read more's very little sex, love, affection, or romantic notions of any sort, there's an unstated attraction between the two characters, repressed homosexuality (one of the characters is apparently sexually assaulted by another man at the gay bar where he works, his subsequent revenge the reason for his imprisonment, but it's never shown on screen.) Had the box not mentioned "homo-eroticism" the sexuality of the characters would be impossible to tell for a good deal of the movie.

That being said, this is really more of a murder mystery, whose end is kinda predictable early on.

However Miike has grown somewhat as a director, largely the film takes place on empty stage like sets with only one or two objects in place, like a piece of absurdist theater. There's even an opening interpretive dance sequence, which though beautiful ranks up there with Miikes greatest WTF moments. Though some scenes resemble "Dogville" in their sparseness, there's also subtle use of special effects here, a small animated image of a man trying to escape and being burnt to a crisp, a computer generated impossibly colored sky, and the reoccurring images of the space ship and the ancient temple (the paths within and without). All of the bargain basement effects which Miike has utilized in the past, are integrated well here, from out of nowhere fight scenes, to awkward muted comedic moments of intimacy. So while the story alternates between aggression and tenderness somewhat awkwardly, the visual aesthetics of the movie, fill the screen and the eye with both space and discreet details (otherwise this probably be a two star affair, ratings wise.) If you like Takashi Miike movies, at their most experimental (Gozu, Izo, etc), this is essential viewing, or if you happen to be interested in abstract, philosophical, prison love, sci-fi, murder mysteries....and who isn't?

Another cool Miike movie. Has all the stuff I like about his movies in it. And Masanobu Ando is a pretty baller actor.

Seemed like a good movie. What I could understand of it anyway. I was so lost, I think I will have to watch it again.
