Traditional Muslim values clash with suburban American sensibility in writer/director Varun Khanna's harrowing exploration of a woman wedged between two rival belief systems. Egyptian-American medical... read more read more... student Sahira Abdel-Karim (Ruth Osuna) is a beautiful young woman with a bright future on the horizon. In the outside world, Sahira is blessed with a devoted group of friends and an unwaveringly supportive boyfriend who is always there for her, but a look at Sahira's increasingly tense home life tells another story entirely. Her intimidating father, Mohammed (Wadie Andrawis), is a traditional Muslim whose patriarchal views find him dominating the outwardly confident student, her American mother, Noor (Laurel Melegrano), and her unquestioning brother, Samir (Ryan Izay), with an iron fist, and he resents his daughter's increasingly westernized values and isn't afraid to voice his disapproval with frightening intensity. When Mohammed discovers that his newly empowered daughter has flouted their religious values by experimenting with sex, the brutal punishment he unleashes upon her for dishonoring his family finds years of resentment unleashed in one unthinkable act. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A truly serious subject is handled with unimaginable vulgarity in this debut feature by Varun Khanna that sacrifices credibility at every turn for abject sensationalism.

V.A. Musetto, New York Post

Unfortunately, the movie is melodramatic and heavy-handed.

Robert Koehler

Robert Koehler, Variety

Though it can't hide occasionally crude dramatics, pic is an undeniably bold and daring tragedy. Full Review

Laura Kern

Laura Kern, New York Times

Amateur acting, a wobbly script and a hard-to-swallow finale round out the film, which will, sadly, invoke ridicule in place of shock and anguish. Full Review

Tim Grierson
March 30, 2006
Tim Grierson, L.A. Weekly

A movie this awfully scripted, acted and executed forfeits its right to be forgiven for good intentions. Full Review

Maitland McDonagh

Maitland McDonagh, TV Guide's Movie Guide

Khanna addresses the volatile issue of women's rights within Islamic households, and if his sensationalistic debut feature makes its point with a heavy hand, it's also starkly provocative. Full Review

Nick Schager, Slant Magazine

The noblest of intentions aren't nearly enough to save the film from its daytime TV amateurishness. Full Review
