Better Than Chocolate is a lesbian love story. Walking home from an evening at the lesbian club 'Cat's Ass,' Maggie is confronted by a gang of skinheads. Suddenly a minibus comes to a screeching halt ... read more read more...and out jumps Kim. The skins move on, and Maggie thanks Kim, who watches her go. This is their first meeting. Maggie has recently dropped out of law school and now works in a women's shop. To avoid a confrontation with her mother, she makes up a success story and tells her that she's living in a beautiful apartment. As her mother is having her difficulties with her second husband, she decides to take her young son and come to live with Maggie for a while. Meanwhile, Maggie is housesitting the apartment of a female performer on tour. As fate might have it, she runs across Kim again and they find themselves at the new apartment making love in the shower -- at which moment Maggie's mother and little brother step in. The film was screened as part of the Panorama section of the 49th International Berlin Film Festival, 1999. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, Rovi

Interesting, but nothing more than that. I loved the crazy idea with the books in ice.

There were many little flaws in this film, and some story directions I would have done differently, but it was an enjoyable piece and one of the better Canadian-born films.

Maggie works and lives in a bookstore, meets Kim, seduces her, and then her mother suddenly appears on her doorstep. It's a weird mix of romance, lesbian and transgender issues, the struggle against censorship, experimenting with sex toys, and coming out to one's mother. One of the best lesbians movies I have seen. Very funny, sweet and emphasizes a lot of the struggle us lesbians go through with family when coming out and such. You will laugh at this one, you will enjoy it if you like this kind of things. Nice pass time.

Anne Wheeler's sexy, funny, poignant film, from a bright script by Peggy Thompson, is a real charmer, with considerable brains. Full Review

Plays like a 'very special episode' of a sitcom. That is, one with explicit nudity and sex. Full Review

The makers of gay-themed films often ignore this rule: Romantic comedy clichés don't become innovative just because the lovers are the same sex.
