Two guys used to drinking beer for fun suddenly become fierce competitors in a sort of Lager Olympics in this over-the-top comedy. Todd Wolfhouse (Erik Stolhanske) and his brother Jan (Paul Soter) are... read more read more... from a German-American family but have never visited the Old Country until their grandfather dies and they fly to Germany to scatter his ashes. Todd and Jan arrive during the annual Oktoberfest celebration and accidentally discover a secret competition, "Beerfest," in which the world's leading beer guzzlers determine who can handle the most brew during several days of heated drinking games. Todd and Jan are no slouches when it comes to downing suds and offer to compete, but the German branch of the family, the Von Wolfhausens, scoff at their desire to enter the contest and inform them no mere American could hope to carry away the Beerfest honors. Determined to prove Yanks can swill beer and embarrass themselves just as well as anyone, Todd and Jan bring their most skilled drinking buddies to Germany to defend America's honor on the field of drunken battle and show their German relatives that the family's talent didn't vanish when they crossed the pond. Beerfest was written and directed by Jay Chandrasekhar of the comedy troupe Broken Lizard, and several other Broken Lizard members pop up in the film's cast, as do Will Forte, Mo'nique, Cloris Leachman, and Jürgen Prochnow. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Beerfest is a decent comedy with good laughs. Considering that this was directed by the same guys who made Super Troopers, this film is a bit of a letdown. The film does have good comedic moments, but compared to Super Troopers is less memorable. Beerfest though may have its flaw... read mores, but it definitely is a decent comedy to watch with friends. Beerfest is good for what it is, there's never anything great at work on-screen. The film has a few good laughs, but it never succeeds at being a standout comedy flick. Beer fest is a worthy comedy to watch, just don't expect anything great to come out of it. The comedy is decent and is decent, but the filmmakers have made far better films than this. Beerfest is really a film to watch with friends. I found the film to be quite amusing, but it lacked a little something to really make it stand out like Broken Lizard's other comedy, Super Troopers. If you're looking a decent comedy, then this is your film. Although not perfect, Beerfest does have a few good laughs. I enjoyed how silly this film was, but I also thought the film had more potential in being a great comedy. If the filmmakers would have spent a little more time with the script, Beerfest would have been a much better film. This is a fun comedy that should have been much better, nonetheless it still manages to be loads of fun and bring on a few a few laughs. Worth watching if you've enjoyed Super Troopers.

One of the worst films I have ever seen.

Not as great as Super Troopers, but definitely warrants watching if you're a fan of Jackass or Ashton Kutcher.

A fun comedy that doesn't try to trick you into thinking its anything else but a light-hearted story. The plot is completely obvious and ridiculous, but that's kind've why I love it so much. Broken Lizard is always consistent in their quality and making movies for movie-lovers an... read mored people that like to enjoy dumb yet smart films.

Just doesn't do it for me, probably Broken Lizard's second best work after Super Troopers. Has some memorable moments.

Instead of a chick flick, this movie is a guy movie - with drinking, burping, bare breasts, stupid characters, etc.

I found the beer (and humour) tasteless. Pass on this movie.

Hilarious...I find that anything directed by Jay Chandrasekhar is usually pretty damn good.

    Surprisingly hilarious moments.

Yeah it's stupid, and that's why I liked it. Plus, any movie with so many Das Boot in-jokes is alright by me.

Now this never got released in theaters in New Zealand, possibly something with the distribution but I finally ... read moresaw this in the video shop, remembered reading about it last year, finding out is was the Broken Lizard team who also did Super Troopers and I remember having a chuckle at the trailer, so I hired it. Now people that know me now, I obviously hate films that lack plot, developed characters and everything that makes a film of whatever genre a brilliant film. Now with comedy, theres 2 ways you can go, you can go the route where your comedy is well thought-out, witty, smart and has lovable, well thought-out characters (Little Miss Sunshine comes to mind there) and then you have the all out, over the top, mindless comedy that if made right, you can forget its flaws and have a really good time....this film does that. No doubt that there is no developed characters, obviously it is full of cliches and you know what is going to happen, but by god did I laugh during this film. With nearly every gag hitting it right on the money and the "Asshole" scene right up until the morning after had me in tears.

This is highly recommended for anyone looking for some mindless, hilarious fun, don't forget to have a beer or two first.

Even in a wacky, stupid comedy like this you have to have some thread of a plot. Full Review

I felt oddly respected: Neck-deep in barley and boobs, marinated in urine, Beerfest panders shamelessly to the 15-year-old in this 30-year-old... without assuming he is a 15-year-old. Full Review

Ok, so maybe you don't absolutely have to have a Y chromosome and be 14 years old (or have the mind of a 14-year-old) to appreciate the freshmanic humor that is Beerfest. But, oh, does it help. Full Review
