Falling somewhere between the Beyond the Fringe school and the Monty Python league, Bedazzled is an irreverent Faust take-off, written by and starring Peter Cook and Dudley Moore (Moore also composed ... read more read more...the music). Moore plays a short-order cook at a London Wimpyburger restaurant, who falls hopelessly in love with waitress Eleanor Bron. About to commit suicide, the broken-hearted Moore is approached by Satan (Peter Cook). The Fallen Angel offers to purchase Moore's soul in exchange for seven wishes--the first of which is squandered when Satan buys Moore an ice cream bar (something over which the two stars quarrel throughout the film). Enticed by living personifications of the Deadly Sins--Raquel Welch, wearing next to nothing, is "Lillian Lust"--Moore allows Satan to grant him his heart's desire, utilizing the magic words, "Julie Andrews!" But with each wish, Satan, being Satan, can't help but gum up the works with a double-cross. The desperate Moore ultimately wishes to be allowed to spend the rest of his life with Eleanor in an environment with no other men--whereupon Satan transforms both Eleanor and Moore into nuns! Finally Satan has a change of heart, allowing Moore and Eleanor to fall in love in more orthodox surroundings and permitting Moore to regain his soul. Satan hopes that God will appreciate this good deed and allow him to re-enter Heaven. But God doesn't buy this; He's satisfied with Satan remaining mankind's "necessary evil". ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie is very funny at first, but the story is very familiar and the jokes wear thin in the middle of the movie. Of course it does have a good cast, and they're good in the movie. There are some good parts, but overall it's not a great movie.

despite the feel of a joke too long and a weak ending still a welcome addition to the pantheon of brit comedy. cook has a roaring good time as george spiggot, who is really beezlebub, mr. scratch, mephistopheles, and legion, and he's trying to get back into heaven with every dir... read morety trick he can pull. dudley moore paves his way to hollywood fame and fortune in this romp that spares no prisoners, particularly catholic ones, as the schlump who sells his soul for the girl of his dreams, eleanor bron, as always, the unreachable, yet articulate, object of desire. better the the remake, but you've heard that rather cliche saying before, haven't you?

A very stale comedy from the brits. It was later remade but even that one wasn't very good.

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's attempt at a feature long film. The movie was an over-stretched sketch and over-done. Not too bad movie, but not good movie either.

I have a real soft spot for the remake, - though Peter Cook is an infinitely better Satan than Hurley. This version suffers from a low budget but has a brilliant script. Worth watching both.

Incredibly funny film with the brilliant Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Don't bother with the terrible remake, stick to the original.

"and the magic words: Julie Andrews!"

Too bad Moore and Cook didn't do more features...

This is a great original comedy that blows away the remake. Cook and Moore are a fabulous pair. May seem dated but is still good.

Very dated, bit bleak, but I cant get enuff of this flick. It reminds me so much of WITHNAIL & I. Classic Brit comedy at its best. I miss Pete & Dud.

I found a lot of it only mildly amusing but always enjoyable, due mostly to the rapport between the mischievous Cook and the sawed-off sad sack Moore. Full Review

Cook and Moore were a perfect team, not only in their verbal delivery and acting styles, but also physically -- and cinematically. Full Review
