Battleship is a cross between a US Navy Recruitment campaign and a film based on a board game. It is as odd as that sounds. The army message of 'Your life won't amass to anything without us' message is a bit sickening and the 'Those left disabled by war are still useful' message ... read moreeven more so. The acting is dreadful, the script is baffling, the story is laughable, the cast is a strange mix of could do better and couldn't do any better and the aliens are rubbish. And yet for some strange reason part of me quite enjoyed it. The stupid part.

Surprisingly okay for a film based on a game as plotless as Battleship. My favourite part was when they actually played it.

Sometimes you just want to turn your brain off and watch things getting blown up. This picture fits the bill perfectly. Don't try and think - don't notice the obvious plot contrivances, the cartoonish caricatures, the total implausibility - manage all that and you have a decent... read more, fairly entertaining film... but we've come to bury Caesar, not to praise him - so....

In spite of some decent special effects and the glory of seeing the Mighty Mo pressed back into action, this film reeks of "been there, seen that". All the characters being in the right place at the right (or wrong, depending on your point of view) time - the obvious attempt at establishing a rivalry that of course ends up being a plot device where the two just have to get along for the good of the planet - the hackneyed love affair ... all are attempts to give this film more weight - and frankly, the film would have been just as good (and I use that term lightly) without them.

At the center of the film are those pretty cool aliens and their uber cool starships. Add to it the race against time as said aliens attempt to call in reinforcements, and you've got a nice action film that, for my money, does a much better and concise job of giving you that action than the Transformer films.

That the aliens have a weakness and that the weakness isn't something you want to think too hard about is typical - but when it keeps getting thrown in your face, over and over, makes it hard to ignore. You also try to ignore that the aliens have a device like the ultimate saws-all that can repeatedly cut through anything without ever dulling - and yet for some reason they didn't arm their ships with the same metal, making it easy to destroy them with regular (non nuke) firepower (although it is hilarious to see the US Navy shooting at these high tech battlewagons with machine guns - yeah, like that's gonna hurt em!). Then try to ignore that, as the alien ships are cruising through space, they somehow don't have the guidance capabilities to avoid hitting a satellite (hmm, they traveled across how many million parsecs of space and missed all kinds of meteors and other space garbage only to crash into a satellite when coming down the home stretch???)

I haven't mentioned the acting here, and really there is no need to - they all play their part, regurgitate the lines they are given without seeming too wooden, in spite of the cartoonish nature of the characters they are playing. But really, this film is about the alien ships and how the navy combats them. Nicely done in most regards and make this worth a watch if you just want to be entertained by mindless action.

I also want to mention that the synopsis for the film that came up on DirecTV mentioned that this film is based on the Hasbro game of the same name. I looked twice and said, "WTF" - no way... but yes, it's true - there is a segment of the film that is like playing the children's game Battleship. Wow - wonder how much Hasbro donated to make that happen.

I was pleasantly surprised at this, fearing another alien film closer to Skyline, this was a lot more like Independence Day at sea!! The SFX are really great and certainly has a impressive feel to it. There is plenty of action and a mix of humour as well with a well chosen cast. ... read moreYep it seems to skip a bit of the story early on in the film, unless I missed a 1 year later text pop up? At times it could almost be an advert for the American Navy, past and present. It manages to pay homage to the Battleship game as well in one scene, and Brooklyn Decker is great eye candy. If you enjoy a no-brainer, fun action Independence day, then you'll have a blast!

Ok. I admit it. I am an absolute sucker for these kinds of movies. Fun! Exciting! Action filled! Plenty to hooray about!! A love letter to U.S. veterans, and the military in general. One part Independence Day; one part Armageddon. Yes, things may get far-fetched in the end, and t... read morehe opening could have been edited a little more (but everyone wants a bit of story, right?). All in all, it offers the feel-good feelings it shoots for very effectively...and the geek in me had to applaud at the end. :)

Contrived and kind of stupid at times. Still, it is a fun, mindless action film...if you don't feel the need to question why things are happening.

it's nothing new or innovative for the plot, and I felt like am watching independence day...
but it's still enjoyable with the navy style and the good effects.

Decent actioner with cool effects, Battleship based on the classic board game is not as bad as everyone claims it to be, but it's not a good film either. I enjoyed the film, and I was entertained. If you're looking for an effective and thrilling action film that is mindless, then... read more Battleship is for you. The film travels the same path as films like Battle L.A, and the action scenes are certainly fun, but this is not a film to watch if you're looking for a great film. Battleship is pure popcorn entertainment. Enjoyable, but it does have its fair share of flaws. The thing with this film is that it's predictable and clichéd, but in the end, who cares? If you want to have a mindless, dumbed down evening of noisy action fair, this is the perfect film to watch. Every year there seems to be a film that is simply designed for you to shut your brain off and enjoy. Everything about the film is dumb, ridiculous and over the top, but that's what makes it fun. A decent time waster that definitely should not be taken seriously, Battleship is this year's guilty pleasure. Don't go in expecting a great film, because you'll surely be disappointed. Expect a decent popcorn flick, and that's what you'll get. The film is fun from start to finish. If you love big budget action flicks with great special effects, then you're sure to enjoy this film. A decent flick that though isn't perfect is mindless fun from start to finish. If you loved the Transformers films, then you're sure to like this film. The special effects here are great and the battles are fun, and that's really the standout of the film. Peter Berg direction is uneven, but he manages to craft a decent action flick that is at times better than most popcorn films. There are far worst films out there than this one, and if you watch this, don't go in expecting great performances. Keep your expectations to a minimum, and you'll likely to enjoy. A decent time waster, and sometimes it's good to watch films like in order to unwind and have a blast even if it's not perfect.

Battleship is an adaptation of the board game, but they've added aliens for some crappy reason. We follow Taylor Kitsch as the biggest dick in the world. He has no redeemable qualities even though we are constantly told of how talented he is. We never get to see this, so I have n... read moreo idea what everyone is talking about. He joins the navy and makes it to the rank of Lieutenant within about 5 years. Again I don't know how because they don't show it. He is joined by his older and more responsible brother played horrifically by Alexander Skarsgard. Seriously, this is one of the worst performances I've ever seen in my life and I've seen a lot. He just starts shouting at Kitsch in the most unbelievable fashion. The rest of the cast are made up of blockbuster cliches and incorporates the acting debut of Rihanna who is OK because she doesn't have a lot to do and some real life soldier who lost his legs in Iraq. Now I have nothing but respect for the man but why is he in a film? I'm not going to patronize the guy by saying 'He did well considering this is his first time acting' He didn't do well. He was terrible beyond words. Not one of his lines resonated with anything regarding real emotion. Every time the film got going, he would appear on screen to remind you of how bad it was. Liam Neeson has maybe 4 minutes of screen time and the film just cuts to him to assure you it got at least one decent actor. The special effects are fantastic even if the action scenes they are incorporated into are just messy. The most confusing part was the aliens motives, they seemed like the good guys most of the time as they refused to attack humans unless threatened. If this was an indictment of human nature or something then it picked the wrong film to do it in. It gets 2 stars for making me laugh at it on a regular basis.

Quite possibly one of dumbest, loudest and cheesiest action movies I've seen in quite some time, Battleship is also extremely hilarious and a thoroughly entertaining affair. The loyalty and support the movie displays for US Navy Sailors of the past and present is heartwarming, an... read mored the humor, while stemming from obvious inconsistencies between the film Navy and our actual Service Branch, was really refreshing. Unfortunately, most civilians probably won't understand most of these amusing nuances that my Navy brethren and I did... Which will make it that much easier to dismiss this film as a worthless experience (which it most certainly was not).
