Based on a novel by Robert Penn Warren, this Southern potboiler stars Yvonne DeCarlo as Amantha Starr, the daughter of a wealthy Louisiana plantation owner. When her father unexpectedly dies, Amantha ... read more read more...discovers that her father was deep in debt and the family is penniless, and she is forced to drop out of the exclusive girls' school she was attending. What's more, it is discovered that Amantha has a small amount of African-American blood, and under the laws she is to be sold into slavery in New Orleans. Amantha is purchased by Hamish Bond (Clark Gable), a dashing, wealthy, but mysterious landowner. While Amantha is at first terrified by her new situation, in time she grows fond of Hamish and becomes romantically involved with him. However, the outbreak of the Civil War leads to Union forces taking New Orleans; RauRu (Sidney Poitier), Hamish's trusted overseer, joins the Northern forces as the Rebels go down in defeat. RauRu hates Amantha for literally sleeping with the enemy, and Hamish for the corrupt system he represents, but his last remaining threads of loyalty prevent him from taking them prisoner. With his crops destroyed, Hamish must rebuild his empire from the ground up, and, as he joins forces with his former associate Capt. Canavan (Torin Thatcher), he must reveal a shameful secret to Amantha: he once earned his living as a slave trader. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Clarke Gable Movies such as this show me how Paradoxic Love is.
  • July 18, 2011
As a favorite line from the movie says "I have a Poverty of Words" to describe this Film. While some refer to this lesser known & beloved Movie as "Gone With The Wind Lite" & there are definite parallels, this Splendiferous Film has it's own merits.Yes, Clark Gable is in it, & a S... read moreouthern(New Orleans) Gentlemen Slave/Land Owner,Hamish Bond.He is also a bit of a Rouge as Rhett Butler, but in this case, a Former Ship Fleet Captain with a Dirty Secret. It's also got a very Spunky,Educated,& Beautiful Daughter of a Kindly Plantation/Slave Owner, Amantha Starr(Yvonne De Carlo)that has had life's misfortunes harden her heart. Upon his death, she learns her true heritage is having been born to a Black Slave Mistress of her Fathers, & now is Chattel to be sold at Auction as a Slave towards his debts.Hamish buys her for $5000 Dollars, to save her from Crueler Fate, for which she hates him & tries to escape. She eventually yields to his kindnesses & becomes his Lover.
Sydney Poitier is also in this as RauRu, Hamish's seemingly Educated Overseer Slave who has a Love/Hate relationship with Hamish. It all becomes quite complicated when the Civil War breaks out & RauRu fights for the North & Hates his former Master & Amantha for Loving a White Man.RauRu's loyalty, & very beliefs, are tested, & Hamish's Shameful Secret is Revealed. The empire again needs to be re-established,another parallel to
GWTW, but in this case , Gable(& De Carlo) "Give a Damn".........Awesome Movie, love it almost as much, but different than, GWTW.Just wish it were on as often, so just go buy it then!!!

A lot of people saw this as Clark Gable playing up the "Gone With the Wind" angle, but it's really a story about slavery and race in America. It's not a classic like GWTW, but it should stand on it's own merits. Sure, it's a bit watered down for the late 50s sensibilities, and ... read moreyes, it's pretty melodramatic stuff, but it's not a bad movie and well worth a look.

A young, beautiful Yvonne De Carlo plays Amantha Starr, the daughter of a plantation owner. She's away at college when she is asked to come home. Her father has taken ill and by the time she arrives, he has already passed away. Then comes the realization that Amantha is really half black, and instead of the daughter of a plantation owner, she will now be sold along with all of the other property to pay off back taxes. Hamish Bond (Clark Gable) buys her, but sets her up like a lady.

A 30 year old Sidney Poitier plays Rau-Ru, a freed slave and raised as Hamish's son. Rau-Ru was educated, so he is all too aware of the atrocities that are performed on black people by people like Hamish, himself, so there's a love/hate relationship going on there.

This DVD was released a little before Yvonne De Carlo death, and it's good that we get a chance to see her before she became well-known as Lilly Munster.
