A paraplegic ex-marine finds a new life on the distant planet of Pandora, only to find himself battling humankind alongside the planet's indigenous Na'vi race in this ambitious digital 3D sci-fi epic ... read more read more...from Academy Award-winning Titanic director James Cameron. The film, which marks Cameron's first dramatic feature since 1997's Titanic, follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a war veteran who gets called to the depths of space to pick up the job of his slain twin brother for the scientific arm of a megacorporation looking to mine the planet of Pandora for a valued ore. Unfortunately the biggest deposit of the prized substance lies underneath the home of the Na'vi, a ten-foot-tall, blue-skinned native tribe who have been at war with the security arm of the company, lead by Col. Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). Because of the planet's hostile atmosphere, humans have genetically grown half-alien/half-human bodies which they can jack their consciousnesses into and explore the world in. Since Jake's brother already had an incredibly expensive Avatar grown for him, he's able to connect with it using the same DNA code and experience first-hand the joys of Pandora while giving the scientific team, led by Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) and Norm Spellman (Joel David Moore), some well-needed protection against the planet's more hostile forces.On a chance meeting after getting separated from his team, Jake's Avatar is rescued by Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), a Na'vi princess, who brings him into her tribe in order to give the humans a second chance at relating to this new environment. When word gets out of his increasing time with the alien species, Quaritch enlists Jake to do some reconnaissance for the company, as they'd like to persuade the tribe to move their home before taking more drastic measures to harness the treasure hidden below. Yet as Jake becomes one with the tribe and begins to understand the secrets of Pandora, his conscience is torn between his new adopted world and the wheelchair-bound one awaiting him when the psychic connection to his Avatar is broken. Soon battle lines are drawn and Jake needs to decide which side he will fight on when the time comes. The film was shot on the proprietary FUSION digital 3D cameras developed by Cameron in collaboration with Vince Pace, and offers a groundbreaking mix of live-action dramatic performances and computer-generated effects. The revolutionary motion-capture system created for the film allows the facial expressions of actors to be captured as a virtual camera system enables them to see what their computer-generated counterparts will be seeing in the film, and Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning Weta Digital visual-effects house supervises Avatar's complex special effects. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

    Visually stunning , amazing on the IMAX 3d screen. As many have said the story isnt anything new but it does not have to be. This was an incredible feast for the eyes. If your going to spend 400 million on a movie this is the way to do it.

    What a great time to be alive! A time when James Cameron is back on top of his game, and when the magic of special effects and CGI have become as breath-takingly flawless as it is. And breath-taking is truly the word here. Because not only is Avatar a fantastic sci-fi film, but i... read moret's taken movies in general to a whole new dimension, far beyond everything we've previously seen. The CGI looks so real that you can almost touch it (especially in 3D), and it's hard to believe that Pandora and its inhabitants were all made in a bunch of computers. That's just how amazing this movie looks.

    My only complaint concerns the story and some of the dialogue, as its highly predictable and quite thin. Most of the plot events feel very familiar, and is unfortunately rife with clichés and stereotypes. It's a pity, because it dragged down the overall experience a bit. Even so, it's still an amazing movie that made my jaw drop more than a few times. And to give you an idea of just how awesome it really is, I've here gathered some of the titles it deserves to be awarded with:

    * Best movie of 2009

    * Best CGI effects of all-time

    * One of my top 30 favourite movies

    * Most realistic animation ever created

    * One of the top 10 films of the decade

    * One of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made

    The bottomline is: this is no ordinary cinematic experience. It's a mindblowing and emotional thrill ride, that'll take you to a place beyond your wildest dreams. A visual masterpiece, that truly leaves you lost for words.

    Seeing as I'm the last person on the planet to have seen Avatar, the hype was always going to effect my judgement. Ok, so here we go, the 3D special effects were very clever, and for the best part very good but...is it just me or did the Na'vi people look shit? I mean really, all... read more that time, effort and money and that is the best you could do? Also, the effects as clever as they are, were great as a back-drop but didn't amount to anything as important as a character, which was kind of how it was billed. Most of the night scenes are just one big jungle-themed neon disco, it reminded me of the time in the early 90's around when I first discovered drink, being drunk on the floor of my mates bright studio flat kitchen, desperately trying to take off my hyper-colour tie-dye t-shirt but not quite managing. Also, whats with the 'Internet style jungle', USB ponytails? Really? All that money and the height of your imagination and views on spirituality peaks at USB ponytails? Oh, and notice how every Na'vi is actually black and every Na'vi scene has a ladysmith black mambazo style song accompanying it? It's this and many other unimaginative ideas that made me loose interest to be honest. At one point I wondered if the whole film was a reaction to 9/11 and was an anti-war film in disguise but I don't think James Cameron is that clever. The story is too simple and unimaginative. They could have concentrated on so many of the interesting aspects of the story but instead skipped over them. They could of had a big build up to the discovery of the Na'vi, they could have made more of the Avatar experience - something that the film Surrogates did much better for a lot less money. What about the alien sex scene? You could have made a whole film about the chemistry, intimacy, ethicist etc of having sex with an alien (think Cronenburg maybe). The one scene I did like was when Neytiri first encounters Jake Scully's real body but then again, it was over too soon. It wasn't a bad film but it really isn't anything special. The effects were good but I can't say I liked most of them, especially when most of the 'human' scenes looked like computer game chapters between actual gaming time in, er, computer games. Pah, whatever.

    While I don't think this was the best film of 2009, I do think it is still one hell of a great movie. None of the enormous budget this movie had went to waste, and that's a great message to all film makers and industry people: look at what Cameron did, and follow his example. Lik... read moree many, I had been waiting for this one for 12 years. It's good to have Cameron back. We need more visionaries like him. Is this movie perfect? No, but what movie ever truly is. The plot and story, are good, despite not being unique. I don't probably need to talk about the visuals-everyone else has already said enough, and did it better than me. They are impressive, and I agree with those who said it before me. What I really liked was the whole world of the movie. It reminded me of Star Wars. I wanna know more about the other tribes, all those cool creatures, and things like that. In conclusion: this is artful and masterful filmmaking at its finest. Cameron takes elements that are not original, but makes them fresh and fun and exciting, and the cherry on top is great loooking 3-D which, instead of being gimmicky, is used properly as a tool to immerse the viewer into the film. Well done everyone.

    Avatar is an extremely unique film that's on a larger level on a technical scale then possibly any film ever made. It's plot isn't as amazing but there's no way you cannot be absolutely gobsmacked at how much it challenges the mortal imagination.

    The visuals are unequivocally exquisite, although the story is severely lacking any structure of complexity. I feel the story has been rehashed endlessly to the point I felt uninterested at the conclusion. Too much exertion was applied to the visuals, not enough went into an inno... read morevative story. Beautiful visuals and a passionate story, Avatar may not have the most originality in it's story but the stunning effects and strong characters make this film incredibly entertaining.

    Avatar is possibly (other than Inception) the most visually greatest film ever made. I mean what other movie supplies this amazing action, effects, characters, and bang for your buck. This futuristic film about Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a crippled ex marine who when his twi... read moren brother dies, he is sent to space to to a planet called Pandora, and is signed on for the Avatar project. The Avatar project is where you are given a alien body similar to the native aliens and sent into into it so they can explore Pandora without problems and to study the planet. But when Jake is chased away and becomes lost and gets attacked but is then saved by a native alien named Neytiri (Zoe Salanda), he learns the way of their culture and must a choice, stay with the humans or join his new family. It may be similar to Dances with Wolves, but if the story ain't broke, don't fix it. As I said before the effects are possibly the greatest of all time. I thought the acting was very good, I can't think of very good acting in Sci Fi's but this, Inception, Star Trek (2009) have started to prove me wrong. James Cameron has created many masterpieces, Titanic, Tertminator 2, Aliens, and now this is up there with them. This is currently the highest grossing film ever and I know why, because its awesome.
