Early in his life, as Emperor of the region of Magadha, he waged a brutal campaign against the neighboring fiefdom of Challenge, leaving the land bloody and ravaged. The war paid a toll on the young king; having realized the full horror that he wrought, Asoka renounced violence and turned to the spiritual sanctuary of Buddhism. An applaudable effort from Santosh Sivan. If he had shown the guts to make this movie without the song sequences and certain Bolywood gimmicks this could have been a real class act, and well worth showing to an international audience.

    Great movie. Interesting story plot.

I will most likely forget this film by next weekend. The traditional Bollywood musical numbers are completely unnecissary. The fights don't look too different from the dances; both are obviously choreographed and transparent. None of the performances stand out. C-

This is a very awesome movie. Although it is pretty sad.The songs are pretty catching even though its in a foriegn language. It has to do about love and violence. The time of the place is back in the dynasty era when we didn't have t.v or cars.

I can't even remember most of this movie, just that it was awesome and that Pawan is a horse's name.

My first foray into the world of Bollywood cinema. It took a little getting used to. A lot of flash cuts and close-ups so that the story a bit too fast, especially at the beginning. And then there are the musical numbers, which spring up unexpectedly throughout the movie. But... read more it's good music, all the leads are attractive, and it's an interesting story. If I can make it through nearly 3 hours of it, I guess I'm willing to give some more Bollywood films a shot.

I watched this movie at 4 am. It got a little trippy, but it was amazing. The songs were good, and Kareena and SRK did fabulous with the acting.

This was one of the best frreign films that I've seen Based loosely on the real life character in India's anceint history' of a ruler that later lead the movement and spread of Buddisum in India. Blood , guts..real!!

I saw this movie 3x in the theater. the song and dance numbers were distracting, but that is what you get in Bollywood. like this review says, the movie does its best when it is being real. beautiful sweeping landscapes and a great performance by Mr. Khan.

Part historical epic, Part booty-shaking music video. While the musical segues could have ended up on the editing room floor, I've sat through worse things than Kareena Kapoor shaking her bootay. Full Review

While it doesn't quite stack up with the best of recent Indian imports ... this handsome historical epic does have a lot to recommend it. Full Review

This enthralling film deserves to realise Indian producers' longstanding dream of reaching an international audience. Full Review

If you leave your prejudices at the box office, you may find it rather invigorating -- if a little on the lengthy side. Full Review
