In the comedy American Reunion, all the American Pie characters we met a little more than a decade ago return to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. In one long-overdue weekend, they will ... read more read more...discover what has changed, who hasn't and that time and distance can't break the bonds of friendship. It was summer 1999 when four small-town Michigan boys began a quest to lose their virginity. In the years that have passed, Jim and Michelle married while Kevin and Vicky said goodbye. Oz and Heather grew apart, but Finch still longs for Stifler's mom. Now these lifelong friends have come home as adults to reminisce about-and get inspired by-the hormonal teens who launched a comedy legend. -- (C) Universal

Sleazy entertainment by providing some nostalgia, and after that, it's nothing more than a silly, dumb-jock flick.
  • May 10, 2012
In all honesty...completely pointless, this franchise was perfectly fine with the original three and all the sexual toilet humour had been exhausted pretty good even then. Here we simply have more of the same obviously but its just not funny anymore because its all been done when... read more the cast were younger and it made more sense.

I saw the first film when I was around 21 I think so I myself have grown up with the characters (sort of, maybe I'm a bit older?) as it were. Now I'm 34 (which I'm guessing is about the age of the characters for this new film, late 20's early 30's) and can look back at my earlier years with glee or trepidation just as in the film hehe.

Anyhow back on subject...from the very first sequence with Biggs and Hannigan in the bedroom I could see this was gonna be a tired rehash and not as funny, yes you know what your going in for with this film but you can clearly see its worn out. The cast all look older, slightly fatter with receding hair, well...they do despite the hard work from the Hollywood makeup department to combat these natural effects and make them appear still relatively young.

Best visual gag was probably when 'Stiffler' had finished 'chow time' on an old tubby schoolgirl acquaintance, pretty direct and smirk inducing. Apart from that its all very dumb and predictable as you would expect but not really in a good way anymore.

A very funny and nostalgic reunion that has its heart in the right place and is strictly for the fans of the franchise, who will be pleased to see again those familiar faces from a decade ago and surprised to see that that raunchy humor still works.

The gang is back, and it's nice to see how they've grown. NPH cameo is always awesome.
  • April 20, 2012
I only liked it for the nostalgia effect. It's just nice to see people from your childhood all grown up. But then you realize that once they grow up, it's kinda ridiculous for them to be making masturbation jokes at age 40.

Wow, Tara Reid has not aged well. Have you ever wondered why none of the main characters from the original "American Pie" (except for Seann William Scott) have made a successful movie in years? Well wonder no more. Co-written and directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg ... read more(yeah, that's right. The Harold & Kumar writers) and starring the old gang: Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Seann William Scott, Mena Suvari, Eddie Kay Thomas, Natasha Lyonne, Shannon Elizabeth and Chris Own (and I realize that if you are under 20, then you have no clue who any of these people are), "American Reunion" is sequel-centric Hollywood's feeble attempt to revive a dead (straight to video) franchise. And Jason Biggs full frontal nudity doesn't help.
Side Note: I realize Alyson Hannigan co-stars on "How I Met Your Mother" and some would say that she has a thriving career. But that show sucks, so it doesn't really count.

Synopsis: This routine reunion storyline sees the original "American Pie" crew back together again for their 13 year reunion. Yeah, that makes perfect sense. But when all of the "domesticated" guys come back to town, they find that all of the teenage girls there have grown into raging nymphets. Oh, how will they ever survive the weekend? And that's it. That's the entire premise. Everything you would think that would happen on a hokey, primetime television reunion show, happens here but in a rated R format; which means: nudity and mean spirited homophobic jokes galore. Suffice to say, "American Reunion" is nothing more than cheaply written bromance trash, with two watchable performances from Seann William Scott as Stifler and Eugene Levy as Jim's Dad. In fact, let's make this simple. Scott and Levy are the only reasons to watch this mediocre (at best) film. And I really believe that Scott's performance was only tolerable here because the raunchy Stifler character he plays is such comic gold. So much so that a film starring said Stifler character would have been substantially more entertaining than anything "American Reunion" had to offer. Everybody else in this movie is forgettable, offensively bland and just down-right horrific actors; especially Biggs.

The worst part of "American Reunion" is how the entire atmosphere of it is misogynistic at its core. The pitiful writing here works on the comic level of 12 year old boys, with a formula that has one character tell a joke about how all women are sluts, followed by a gay joke, and then another character repeating the formula, and so on and so forth for 90+ minutes. The fact that this method doesn't seem to work during the first 10 minutes of "American Reunion", doesn't seem to deter Hurwitz or Schlossberg. But I guess ignoring how offensively juvenile your jokes are before making a comedy is always the sign of good filmmakers.

Final Thought: Ok time to be painfully truthful. There are some funny moments here, mainly from Scott and Levy, but these moments are very (VERY) few and far between. And definitely not worth paying theater prices to see; no matter how big of an "American Pie" fan you are. Or how badly you want to hear Semisonic's "Closing Time".

"American Reunion" may bring back the entire cast one last time and bring many of the old laughs while doing so, but the fact that they rely on the previous movies to create a laugh most of the time, just proves that this franchise is over. I was laughing quite a bit during my vi... read moreewing of this film, and I loved the pop culture and new-age technology references, but most of the film felt dull. We find out that Jim's mom has passed away, leaving an open space for comedy with his dad. For one last time, these guys meet up for their 13th high school reunion and things obviously get messy. I had a lot of fun watching this movie but most of it felt stale and unoriginal. Sure, they take a sweet take on storytelling, but that is the suck-in of the film. If you don't let it suck you in it will be another comedy that will easily fall apart within the first 20 minutes. Overall, "American Reunion" is a good old time at the movies, but it could have been so much better!

Off the bat I have to say that "American Reunion" gets off to a terrible start; a lagging, unfunny, near saddening start. But for those like me willing to look past the initial twenty-minutes or so, "American Reunion" buds into a winning entry in the franchise brimming with nosta... read morelgia and the crude humor and heart "American Pie" is known for.

I love these characters, nearly all of them, and it was great having them all reunite in what feels like the proper send-off "American Wedding" should have been. The gang's all here; but that by no means is saying that everything works (because it sure doesn't).

Too much time is spent establishing new characters that we don't care about, and jokes do fall dead in the water (or feel like they don't gel with the "American Pie" universe). Some characters from the series making their return get lost and forgotten among a screen-time balancing act and don't feel like their inclusion was at all necessary. If you were expecting the perfect slice of "Pie," this isn't it.

"Reunion" is however a very funny film in it's own right and complete fan service. The self-referential humor actually worked for me, and reminded me of the best moments of the three previous films. It meshes the old with the new, and that is the main reason why I like this film. It's not just a rehash. It's a film that reminisces past installments/successes but realizes that it needs to work as a standalone and not just a series book-end. If not all the jokes work, at least they aren't tiredly retreading the same shtick over again.

The cast is likable as ever, with Eugene Levy and Sean William Scott being the comedic standouts. Levy is the serial scene-stealer in ever Pie film, but Scott marks a strong return for the Stifler character (who isn't as psychotic and over-the-top as the "American Wedding" incarnation... thankfully).

"American Reunion" relies on it's viewers to be returning fans in order to get the most out of it, but I think its funny enough to entertain newcomers as well. While the Class of 99's latest (maybe last) isn't comedic gold and doesn't best the original two films, it's worth seeing and isn't the tired sequel it could have been. It's actually pretty good!

American Reunion is the best sequel in the series, as it offered something refreshing to the series. A class Reunion was just the right thing that needed to bring this series to a close. Now I hated the third film, and honestly quite frankly thought that this film was far better ... read morethan that film. Some gags are good, but others fail. I'm actually surprised that they were able to pull off a good final entry with this one. What makes this film worth seeing is the original cast. Everyone that was important to the first is here. I thought that's what made this sequel the best since the first. At times the jokes are stale, but for the most part this is still pretty funny. The film is a good way to close the franchise, and is an improvement over the lacking second and third parts. The filmmakers have fixed that with this entry. I thought that the gags were better this time around, and laughed as many times as I did watching the first film. the gags At times the film struggles with the material, but for the most part the film is lot of fun. I think that this is a perfect way to end the series, and really I thought that it should have been the direct sequel to the first film. Either way, it's great to see the old gang on-screen again. If you grew up with the original, you're going to like this one despite the fact that it's not as memorable as the first. There's some good comedic bits that work for most of the film, and though not perfect, this is a fun film worth watching.

Better than the third one, 'American Wedding', but overall just comes off as trying too hard to bring back all these characters. It seemed great in concept, but was poorly executed. Hopefully they don't try another one, because it really seems they'll never top the first two.
