In this vaguely allegorical science fiction-crime film, a Los Angeles cop tries to solve the murder of his best friend with the help of his new partner -- a member of a star-faring alien race. In the ... read more read more...near-future world of Alien Nation, the "Newcomers" are a race of formerly enslaved humanoids seeking refuge and integration into Earth society. These unusual immigrants face anger and resentment from some humans, including Matthew Sykes (James Caan), a cop whose partner, Tug (Roger Aaron Brown), was killed in a shoot-out with several Newcomers. In order to get some insight into Newcomer society and track down the "slags" who killed Tug, Sykes volunteers to take on a new partner, Sam "George" Francisco (Mandy Patinkin), the first alien ever promoted to the rank of detective. As Sykes tries to overcome his bigotry against George and his kind, who eat raw beaver and get drunk on spoiled milk, the friendly, helpful George soon learns the identity of Tug's killer: William Harcort (Terence Stamp), a pillar of Newcomer society who is secretly manufacturing the same powerful narcotic that was used to enslave his race. It's up to Sykes and George to stop Harcort before he turns his fellow Newcomers into drooling addicts and pulls the skeletons out of his race's closet for all of humankind to see. Omen 3 director Graham Baker made his screenwriting debut with Alien Nation, as did co-writer Rockne S. O'Bannon. Kenneth Johnson, creator of the miniseries V, would adapt Alien Nation into a weekly television show in 1989 and several made-for-TV movies in the mid-'90s. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

I enjoyed the hell out of this. Check out this premise:
In the futuristic world of 1992, Aliens have landed and we've granted them citizenship in our society. When James Cann's partner is killed, he's teamed up with one of these Aliens to help solve the crime. That alien is playe... read mored by Mandy Patinkin.
From there it's a fairly standard buddy cop film, but with some really funny gags. Well worth checking it out.

A great film. A fantastic mixture of science fiction, suspense, comedy and action. A genre-bending classic that you cant help but love. A wonderfully entertaining winner that's just a great buddy-cop movie with lots to offer. A great new twist on a familiar background. A smart, f... read moreunny and action-packed thrill-ride with solid performances and great special effects. James Caan and Mandy Patinkin are excellent together with their unique and effective chemistry. One of the coolest sci-fi tales of the 80's decade with Terminator and Aliens.

The sci-fi spin does give it all a little freshness however, and although the racial metaphor is a little clumsy, Caan and Patinkin's deadpan delivery show some decent chemistry together with some amusing odd couple comedy. Unfortunately the script is purely by the numbers including a couple of major plot elements that are just sci-fi mumbo jumbo. Terence Stamp also might as well have phoned in his performance as the villain leading up to a particularly weak conclusion which drags an otherwise entertaining film back down to mediocrity.

Not bad considering it's an 80s mash of two usually unbearable film genres, science fiction and buddy cop movies.
I don't regret seeing it, but it's not brilliant and I don't know if I will watch it again of my own volition.

I thought it was pretty good and it might be the way things would happen. The cast worked well together and soon after there was a decent tv show spin off.

A gritty police drug drama with a whole race of interesting aliens thrown in. It's a nice mix. The racial issues come to a new light. An engaging story is told.

Interesting ideas at the very beginning, but then it becomes silly and formulaic. Also the whole idea of the story being a metaphor about race relations is so obvious, it really holds no emotional weight whatsoever.

Alien Nation thinks it's giving you a fresh buddy cop film by having a badass cop (James Caan) getting stuck with an alien (Mandy Patinkin) as his partner. But it's just a typical cop film with bad guys in leather jackets with big shotguns robbing liquor stores or delis. Also if ... read moreyou've seen Lethal Weapon or any other buddy cop movie, you know Caan and Patinkin will become friends.

The film adds nothing to the science fiction genre even if it has fresh ideas like aliens that get drunk on sour milk. I still enjoyed the movie though but due to the work by Caan and Patinkin. Other than that, it's pretty silly.

Pablo Villaca, Cinema em Cena

Uma idéia potencialmente instigante que acaba sendo desperdiçada por um roteiro tomado pelos clichês.

Fascinating and somewhat timely themed sci-fi flick, a minor classic.

Smart sci-fi premise should have made a better movie

Chuck O'Leary, Fantastica Daily

Caan is good, but this is just a very standard buddy cop movie disguised as a sci-fi thriller. Plays better on TV, though.

Fun gimmick cop movie with aliens

Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spirituality and Practice

It begins focusing on the cross-cultural and human dimensions of the tale but it turns into just another police flick replete with crashing cars and endless shootouts.

A shallow dissertation on race relations made watchable by the sci-fi/Police thriller theme. Caan and Patankin have good chemistry, and there are some amusing culture clashes.

OK s-f that failed to capitalize on an interesting premise.

It's 70% cop schpiel and 30% science-fiction fun. Switch those percentages and we'd be calling it a classic.
