This Disney feature-length cartoon combines the most entertaining elements of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. She grows and shrinks after following the instructions of a haughty caterpillar, attends a "Very Merry Unbirthday" party in the garden of the Mad Hatter and the March Hare, stands in awe as the Cheshire Cat spouts philosophy, listens in rapt attention as Tweedledum and Tweedledee relate the story of the Walrus and the Carpenter (a sequence usually cut when Alice is shown on TV), and closes out her day with a hectic croquet game at the home of the Red Queen. The music and production design of Alice in Wonderland is marvelous, but the film is too much of a good thing, much too frantic to do full honor to the whimsical Carroll original, and far too episodic to hang together as a unified feature film. One tactical error is having Alice weep at mid-point, declaring her wish to go home: This is Alice in Wonderland, Walt, not Wizard of Oz! Its storytelling shortcomings aside, Alice in Wonderland is superior family entertainment (never mind the efforts in the 1970s to palm off the picture as a psychedelic "head" film). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Shrill, flat filming of a classic tale. Many stars are wasted here, the voice Miranda Richardson affects for the Red Queen may be intended to be funny but is incredibly grating instead.

Beautiful High-budget CGI realization of Wonderland! Nice fantasy creatures and characters; some computerized and some Henson-created. The assorted settings are magnificent to behold. The All-Star cast is impressive. The pacing is somewhat bogged down by insignificant long scenes... read more (eg. the Griffon and Mock Turtle, the Library and the Greenhouse Gardeners). I suggest fast-forwarding through those scenes to improve flow. Martin Short is good as the Mad Hatter. Whoopi Goldberg makes a good Cheshire Cat. The story has a nice theme of Alice's Wonderland encounters helping her gain confidence to perform a a song in at her parents' tea party.

I feel the all star cast in this film was a little overkill. Granted, Louis Carrol?s ?Alice in Wonderland? is a classic and deserves for the film to tell it well and really capture the adventure and imagination and all this was certainly the case, unfortunately, this is one film... read more that I feel only benefited a younger audience as such, the famous actors could be quite lost on them.

Damned better than the Disneyfied version. It seems so much more like Wonderland, and it accurately follows the scenes from only Wonderland (no Looking Glass crossover here, thank you very much.) Sure, it is a cameo-appearance parade, but at least they capture the spirit of Alice... read more that had never been truly captured before.

Of course, it would have been nice it the meta-plot wasn't so contrived and stupid... but since it's one of the only Alice interpretations out there that has some respect for the material, it's hard to gripe.

alice in wonderland is a fav of mines growing up. The music and animation is great. The characters are very wacky. I would highly recommend this to any Disney lovers.

It's got good visuals and (mostly) good acting. It was definitely on the right track for a while, but then it added an extra half hour toward the end, just to throw in elements from "Through the Looking Glass" for absolutely no reason. It just made the movie drag. And Miranda Ric... read morehardson is annoying as heck.

An interesting made-for-television movie adapting both of Lewis Carroll's books into one. Popular faces abound this tale (Ben Kingsley, Christopher Lloyd) while some faces I could have done without (Whoopi Goldberg?!?). If you're ever bored and you have two hours to spare, I woul... read mored recommend checking it out . . .

. . . for the visual style alone. It's amazing what they accomplished in a TV movie. Sure, the acting is superb (although Gene Wilder as the tortoise was kind of goofy), but the set designs are absolutely fantastic! I'm not sure what it's called, but the trick they used for the Mad Hatter, making his body small while having a bulbous head was really cool.

When my friend proposed that we watch this I was worried that it would be a miserable piece of shit. However, I only had this frame of mind because I was so accustomed to the Disney cartoon version (as well as that live action TV show on the Disney Channel). All nostalgia aside, it's worth a view if you dig the wonderful world of Wonderland.
