Czech surrealist filmmaker Jan Svankmajer, who gained a reputation for his short subjects, makes his feature-film debut with Neco z Alenky, a grotesque look into the darkest, wildest recesses of a chi... read more read more...ld's mind. A surreal adaptation of Lewis Carroll's children's classic Alice in Wonderland, the film stars Kristyna Kohoutová as Alice, the only human character in the film. The other roles, which are voiced by Alice, are filled by an odd menagerie of animated clay, puppets, and meat. After falling asleep beside a stream, Alice follows a stuffed rabbit into a magical world where she encounters several grotesque-looking characters, including a caterpillar and The Mad Hatter. Also released under the title Alice, Neco Z Alenky was nominated for the International Fantasy Film Award at the 1989 Fantasporto Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Blissfully bizarre! Exactly how Lewis Carroll would have envisioned it had he been a crack addicted taxidermist with a fetish for sock puppets.

A young girl visits a wonderful land of white rabbits, mad hatters and skull-faced animals with razor sharp teeth in this dark and surreal stop-motion animation adaptation of ALICE IN WONDERLAND. The whimsical flavor of Lewis Carroll blends astoundingly well with Jan Svankmajer'... read mores nightmare seasonings, like mixing pure cane sugar with white powder heroin.

Essentially an art house interpretation of Alice In Wonderland. It's extremely bizarre and dark compared to most adaptions. The stop motion animation fits really well with the style of the film. It's very much an unknown treasure and i'd recommend it to anyone who loves the story... read more or just likes bizarre, demented kid's movies.

I have to admit that I tried to watch it more than three times without sucess - due to the stop motion animation, it can be a bit tedious and tiredness. After maybe the third try, I watched it entirely and it ws a pleasant surrealist experience. Pretty interesting.

It's always fun to watch Svankmajer's creativity and the film's dark edge is interesting but Alice gets a bit monotonous & unengaging at times and speaking of being unengaging I watched the dubbed version so...

This movie was as awesome in parts as it was tedious. But it was an experience as necessary as Death bed. The props and sets were really cool, and I only wish there were a bigger budget to supplement the director's uncanny creativity. The pacing, dubbing, and sound effects wore m... read moree down.

P.S. Make sure to watch the short after the credits--it's my single favorite part of the movie.

Not really a review but just a feedback:

Well, this one is definitely an old, bizzare, dark film version of Alice in wonderland, but I feel like the stop motion animation, acting and the filming techniques used in this movie was just too old even for my generation to watch... read more.

The stop motion animation kinda reminded me of the overly jurrasic, black and white gojira and king kong movies theyd show on sunday nights when I was a kid.

Perhaps I wouldve appreciated this better if I had been able to watch it back in the late 80s - early 90s or something..

a most bizarre and wonderful take on lewis carroll's surreal classic. genius stop-motion animation. pretty sure it's not for everyone and definitely not for children
  • August 2, 2008
Certainly some neat old skool stop and go animation. The movie would have gotten a solid 4 stars had they not ruined the movie with their "artsy" style of ALWAYS putting a shot of Alice's mouth saying something like "said the white rabbit" after EVERY SINGLE line of dialog throu... read moreghout the whole movie. Once was enough, and after a while it was just stupid. Otherwise it was neat to see a taxidermy rabbit cutting off the heads of marionettes.

An interesting (and at times visually disturbing) ADULT version of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice In Wonderland'. And by "ADULT", I mean it will probably be too freaky (and possibly nightmare inducing) for the average child.

It succeeds (for the most part) in "out surrealing' the org... read moreinal story and putting a very creepy spin on it, by using lots of stop motion animation to bring to life an eclectic array of inanimate objects (largely taxidermied animals) as the charaters of the story.

The are a few moments in the film where it felt that the director was trying a bit too hard to be quirky/surreal, but all in all it was a very interesting an enjoyable journey.
