A companion piece to Genesis, Nacho Cerdà manages to fill an entire half hour with an abundance of gore and an absence of sophistication and good taste. The purpose being: 'Let's see how many disgusting and perverted acts we can squeeze into a 30 minute film'.

Interesting piece of visual art (if that's the right word?), but lacking of any real story.
Fans of gore will appreciate the ghastly realness of the film, though the whole thing comes across a bit self-indulgent.

I had no idea what this was about when I started watching it on Netflix Streaming, and I'm glad since I was caught utterly off guard. Directed by Nacho Cerdà and Starring Xevi Collellmir.

Okay...Most likely in my life time I would never watch a short or a film like this. Short films like Flesh to Flower about a Samurai that mutilates a girl would put me off that stupid shit forever. But alternately Aftermath... read more wasn't the case because my favorite film critic Tadao Sato gave Aftermath 4/5 on his scale saying.

"Aftermath is a disturbing short picture with plenty of gore but somehow redeems it self from start to finish unlike most pictures of its type."

Many critics across the world have indeed wrote the same thing and gave it high praise. Although I would never watch it again but I must say I would never say I regretted seeing it.

Story: None? Many would widely ask the question of "What happens in a morgue after dark?".

Characters: Well None (Sort of)? Our nameless lead is a morgue worker but in all truth despite his dark secret for having sex with dead girls he really fits the profile of your everyday guy. He would never seem like the one for it.

95% for special effects: I nearly thought they were real until they stared to look somewhat rubber like near the end, but overall they look good.

100% for everything else: I think its empowering themes of mostly Necrophilia ruins it but somewhat not really the case, the major flaw is the films lack of narrative and no dialogue at all in the film. But it's the camera angles and music that somehow leads to this rating of a 100%.

Look I don't regret seeing it but the films lack of a story or narrative lead to my 50% and nothing more.

    Keiko's score 58-100.

This is an extremely disturbing short about a mortician who likes to photograph his after hours necrophiliac adventures. The sound, blood coloring, cinematography, and interior organ design pick up where the quality of the outer bodies (very rubber-like) lacks reality. There isn'... read moret much depth to this; it is its synopsis and in executing that task, it is disturbing. Currently available on Netflix Instant Watch.

Thanks to my friend Mark I've got my hands on the copy of this brilliant movie. With a run time of only thirty minutes "Aftermath" will leave you feeling truly disgusted for watching it,but certainly you'll watch it again and again. This movie takes place in an autopsy room where t... read morehere are two morticians slicing up bodies, removing organs and sewing the bodies back up again. One of them(Pep Tosar)decides to lock himself in a room with a female corpse. After cutting off her clothes he grabs a knife and really starts jamming it inside the dead woman's vagina. Then he has sex with the corpse. The film was shot in a mortuary of Barcelona. The special effects are extremely well-done and disgusting.Spanish director Nacho Cerda describes a meaning of "Aftermath":"The theme of it is about death, and I think people one way or another at one point in their lives, worry about death. They realize they are going to die, they are conscious of it,and some people may accept it,some people may not accept it".Highly recommended for all who have an iron stomach.Fans of extreme gore will love this!

Technically, it's an impressive piece of work and shows Cerda has some serious skill as a director as does the cinematographer, Christopher Baffa.
The film/short itself involves necrophilia and very little is left to the imagination as a demented coroner "spends time" with a rec... read moreently deceased woman. It lives up to its vile and disgusting reputation but it's really nothing more than another shocking-for-the-sake-of-being-shocking effort.
Cerda's next film/short Genesis fares MUCH better in my book.

2nd chapter in a trilogy, along with Awakening and Genesis. A 30 minute endurance test shot without dialogue. Female victim on the slab, locked door, a camera and your worst suspicions . Cedra's second feature, "The Awakening" is a lot more popular of the trilogy because of the known fact of its extreme amount of exploitation. So to automatically start to point out all the things wrong with this film would not only be too easy but clichéd.

The film starts out... read more in a morgue where two pathologists are busy preparing two bodies for burial. Let me tell you now, I read prior to viewing this film that Nacho Cerda had some training in pathology. It shows clearly in these scenes, nothing is left to the imagination. The special effects are absolutely top notch, especially for an independent horror film. The corpses are not actors, but are obviously full rubber mannequins pre-filled with blood and organs. I have to give it up to the special effects technicians for did their job superbly. The realism was absolutely dead-on.

(***SPOILERS***) As the film moves on, we see our two characters hard at work although one works with the utmost professionalism while the other takes an unusual amount of pleasure in what he is doing. All the while a transport worker wheels in a fresh corpse of a young woman recently killed in a car accident. The day ends and our workers clean up. The professional leaves for the night leaving the other to his own work. He takes out the new body and wheels her into a new autopsy room. It is revealed that the woman's name is Marta. He undresses and fondles her like a doll, all the while taking pictures. Once the body is completely naked and vulnerable he cuts open and begins to remove the organs. This is where the film really takes a turn into some sick territory. As she is cut open we see his sick gratification. All through a surgical mask that is never removed, as he progresses we see his pleasure build to a point where he takes a scapula and repeatedly stabs the corpse between her legs. Finally, his unnatural lust can stand no more and he drops his trousers and mounts the body. We are now subjected to probably the most unflinching scene of necrophilia anyone in their right mind would ever want to cringe through. (***END SPOILERS***) The ending scene, though not violent, is just as disturbing and frightening to think about.

Now I won't lie for a long time after sitting through this thirty minute atrocity, I was not above slamming Cedra as nothing more than a sadist who wanted to leave his audience feeling disgusted and violated, with this film he does achieve just that. I first rated this film a ten, However, after thinking things out there is sort of a point to it after all. The truth is that all of us for the most part will end up on the mortician's table. What happens after that is between god and the mortician and there is no control over that. Unfortunately this truth is far more frequent and realistic then most will ever admit to. It probes the question of not only mortality but what drives seemingly normal people to these levels of depravity. In truth this film is extremely harsh. One viewing was almost too much for me, and that can be said for a lot of reviewers of this film. To say this is dark is a gross understatement. It has a feeling of genuine doom and dread that carries on from beginning to the very end and long after the end credits have rolled.

In the end, "The Aftermath" is strong stuff and showing this to the wrong people can easily get you labeled as sick. Yet I cannot deny this thirty minute shock-fest was impressively made. One last thought this film has totally convinced me to get cremated when I pass.
