It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Eisenberg) has just graduated from college. James is all set to embark on his dream tour of Europe when his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) suddenly announce that they won't be able to subsidize the trip. Now the only things James has to look forward to this summer are sugar-fueled children, belligerent dads, and an endless parade of giant stuffed animals. When James strikes up a relationship with captivating co-worker Em (Kristen Stewart), however, he finally starts to loosen up. Suddenly, the worst summer ever doesn't seem quite so bad. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A movie set in the 80's some interesting charters with deent acting from Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. Watching this though looked Stewart channeled some of her Bella Swan to this movie but with a little bit more empathy. A fun ride.

"Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans," a poet once said, and so it is for the aimless hero of Adventureland who hopes for a European vacation after college but instead has to take a menial job at a dicey Pittsburgh theme park ... and finds love in al... read morel its gut-churning glory. If you were to ask me who my least favourite actors working today are, the chances are that Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart and Ryan Reynolds would come up pretty quickly. So no-one was more shocked than me when I actually ended up liking this film. It is a sweet 'summer of love... read more' story that I have to admit was easy for me to relate to, it also captured the feeling of the late 80's perfectly. It's no masterpiece but it is pretty hard to fault and I quite liked it.

Thanks to a fine script and superb direction, "Adventureland" manages to be one of the finest teen films since the John Hughes era. While the overall plot may be a bit simplistic for some viewers' tastes, its technical execution is very good. The acting, however, leaves a bit to ... read morebe desired. Stewart performs capably enough, but the main problem is Eisenberg, who gets a bit annoying and childish for his 20-ish-year-old character. The qualities of the fine production far outweigh the acting deficiencies, though. The film is solid.

Jesse Eisenberg breaks out of his usual role as a broke college student, to play a broke college student working at a carnival. Oh and Kristen Stewart is a terrible as usual.

Outstanding performances from a great cast and a sweet coming of age story that will definitely hit home with the college crowd and people who have nostalgia for the 80's. It's also quite funny, but thankfully the comedy enhances rather than damages the emotional resonance of the... read more story. This is the best movie so far in 2009.

Adventureland was a funny and cool movie, it had good acting, good plot, and good climax. Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart have great chemistry. But between all the realism towards life I hated the cliche and stupid scenes. Other than that a really good movie.

'Adventureland' is one of the finer-made comedies nowadays. It is also one of the most memorable comedies in recent times. We are mainly gifted with a great picture from Greg Mottola, who directed 'Superbad' and 'Paul', but takes a different and less exciting tone with 'Adventure... read moreland'. By no means does that put it down, it makes it quite better, making this a perfect comedy, with a great message, and good performances.

Loved it but wish more happened with Em & James at the end. Really cute movie though :) You'll really enjoy it & Bill Hader & Kristin Wig are such a hilarious & adorable married couple as well :) I really do love this movie :) :) :) :)

Jesse Eisenberg released two films in the same year with 'land' in the title. Both featured theme park's and both also featured him trying to lose his virginity. "Zombieland" was one and "Adventureland" the other. Unfortunately for this though, I'd personally choose flesh-eating ... read moreZombies to face-sucking teenagers any day.
When James (Eisenberg) is forced to take a summer job in a ramshackle Pittsburgh theme park, he fears the worst. But the friendships he makes, the lessons he will come to learn, and especially a bumpy romance with remote fellow worker Emily (Kristen Stewart) will ultimately end up becoming memories for life.
A teenage romantic comedy with emphasis on the teenage romantics and less on the comedy. It had a few laugh out loud moments though, with some well written, humourous supporting characters. Where the laughs come from is the similiar dick joke humour from Greg Mottola's previous film "Superbad", but this is a more serious rite of passage tale than his earlier film. Nice use of 'Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground' on the soundtrack and fine performances throughout, particularly Bill Hader as the eccentric theme park manager. However, anything that this had going for it was spoiled by the teenage love story at it's core. It was a bit dull and seemed as though it had teenagers in mind as it's target audience.
The teens wear their angst on their sleeves and if you find yourself still stuck in this difficult time of your life then you'll find plenty to identify with...Everyone else should avoid.

The story is semi-autobiographical, but has a gentler touch than his prior work on Superbad, and certainly relies less on slapstick episodes. Full Review

The youths of Superbad were a little bit younger, a little more likable, their dirty-virgin wit more hilarious [than in Adventureland]. Full Review

Adventureland isn't as clever as Kicking, and not nearly as hilarious as Superbad, but it's still a sweet little memory ache, a Proustian cookie co-flavored with semiotics and Whitesnake. Full Review

The movie does a very good job of capturing the teens and their times. Everything feels right, from the ups-and-downs of late '80s rock, to the way kids really behaved. Full Review
