Filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul offers a poetic look at the past of his family as well as his nation and its culture in this short documentary. As Weerasethakul's camera drifts through the village, capturing images of abandoned building, soldiers making their way through town, children at play, cattle grazing, and unspoiled meadows, the narration contrasts the beauty that can be found in Nabua with the terrible legacy that war and violence has inflicted upon Thailand. Produced as part of Weerasethakul's multipart "Primitive Project," A Letter to Uncle Boonmee received its North American premiere at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was screened in tandem with Jean-Luc Godard's Une Catastrophe. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Uncle Boonmee was a self-indulgent and very personal film for Apichatpong Weerasethakul. It is like a child to him, born unto him by broken memories and strong influences. Here, he acknowledges his heroes, influences and Uncle Boonmee himself. It is exactly what the title suggest... read mores, it is a love letter to classic Hollywood, the novel that inspired him as a child (that he can't remember the name of), people he has met, albeit briefly in his lifetime that left an impression on him, It's a love letter to Thailand, its a love letter to love itself! All shot in the same haunting and beautiful style of the main feature. A great companion piece.

Strange, very strange (spouse hated it)...found it interesting to see through the lens of a different culture...

When confronted by two opposing visions, Weerasethakul seems content to let the need to reconcile them wander away, letting the tranquility of these moments speak for themselves. Full Review
