A writer renowned for debunking infamous paranormal events is confronted by a force that he cannot explain upon checking into room 1408 of the notoriously haunted Dolphin Hotel. Mike Enslin (John Cusa... read more read more...ck) is an author who specializes in horror, but who only believes in what he can see with his eyes and touch with his hands. Having constructed an entire career on his ability to dispel superstitious "haunted house" rumors, Mike is convinced that the afterlife is a manmade construct designed to offer false comfort to the weak minded. Mike's latest project is a book entitled "Ten Nights in Haunted Hotel Rooms," and it seems that in room 1408 of the Dolphin Hotel, this skeptical scribe may finally find proof of the supernatural. Implored by the hotel manager (Samuel L. Jackson) not to enter room 1408, Mike defiantly procures the key and prepares to dispel yet another spectral sham. Now, as is the case with many of life's most profound epiphanies, the writer who thought he knew it all is caught entirely off guard at the precise moment he least expected it. Subsequently faced with undeniable proof of an afterlife, Mike may have a best-seller on his hands if he can simply survive until sunrise. Mary McCormack and Jasmine Jessica Anthony co-star in director Mikael Håfström's (Derailed) adaptation of an original short story by horror icon Stephen King. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I had an interesting experience that may seem like it tainted the experience of watching this: (I was in the theater with my friends and this group to the right was obnoxiously flashing flashlights and talking loudly. One audience member decided to take action and grab a security... read more guard. When he went out, the group decided to split up in order to make the audience member's efforts more difficult. As the security guard came in, he shouted, "Where are they?" The entire audience was pointing to where they were. As one of them was being escorted out, he said something indistinct; one of the audience members yelled out, "Shut up, fatboyyyyyyy!" LOL. Thought it'd be funny to share). Now onto the review: If you're expecting a horror movie, you'll be considerably disappointed. It almost seems like there's a shift from being a horror movie to a survival movie. You're probably thinking, "Well, aren't all horror movies?" Yes, that's true but this guy is trying to survive through earth's elements... yeah, you heard me. I just found this movie to be a bore.

This could have been a smart psychological horror but instead it feels sterile and pointless, missing the chance to explore the possibilities of its premise and the character's issues. Besides, it becomes repetitive after some time, even though John Cusack compensates with a stro... read moreng performance.

1408 is an incredible horror film and is one of John Cusacks best performances of his career. The plot is mainly in the hotel room, and every minute is a non stop thriller and all I wanted was this porr guy to get out of tha evil f#cking room. John Cusack was incredible, he is ... read moreperfect in his role and I truly believed his performance. The horror on a scale from 1 to 10 is about a 9, i was really freaked out and I loved it. My main problem was probably how slow it was and that Samuel L Jackson didn't have a bigger part in this.

Stephen King's prolifically hard work strikes again in 1408, a supernatural feature that never, ever fails to scare. And even though many people can only be frightened by one or two general concepts of horror, this one has enough brilliance to pack a scare for almost everyone. ... read more1408 isn't the generic, shallow terror-fest, either. It is quite complex, yet somewhat understandable, and very enjoyable. (Just don't expect to fully understand the ending.)

The psychology of this movie messes with you more than the actual scares. It's a cool movie.

Do Not Enter 1408. That strange letter is what started the nightmares that await for young ghost story writer, Mike Enslin, in the room number 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel. This movie is extremely underrated. Maybe it was because the movie was to scary for most of the audience. Or, ... read moremore likely, people were like "Hey, this movie is like, uh, PG-13, so, uh, yeah, it's not gonna be scary at all, yeah man." and almost had heart attacks after realizing how scary a PG-13 rated movie could be. Yeah, so I was one of those people... but with one difference. I enjoyed the movie very well. This is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Don't tell me to watch The Shining, I've already seen it. Don't say I need to take a surreal approach and watch Eraserhead, I've seen it too. Don't tell me to watch a true gore film like Alien or A Nightmare on Elm Street... I've seen both. You can literally "feel" what Mike is going through. This isn't your average haunted house movie, infact it really isn't one at all... it's a haunted hotel room movie! But really, watch this movie. And remember... this was written by Stephen King.

The movie attempts a false ending that doesn't quite work; the picture feels prolonged, dragged out, and its ennui lessens the impact of some of its more terrifying fillips. Full Review

Even as haunted hotel King movies go, 1408 is certainly no Shining. Not even the TV-movie version. Full Review

1408 is one of the good Stephen King adaptations, one that maintains its author's sly sense of humor and satiric view of human nature. Full Review

An entertainingly hairy paranormal affair based on a King short story, 1408 sets up its star -- and its audience -- for a blood-curdling, bone-chilling night of horror. Full Review

You might say 1408 has a 1409 ending -- beige, humdrum, only mildly uncomfortable and, once passed through on the journey home, instantly forgettable. Full Review
