For Marshal O'Neil (Sean Connery), the Jupiter moon Io is just another dingy mining town on the final frontier. When his wife leaves him and takes their son with them, it merely confirms that though h... read more read more...e's traveled millions of miles, his life is going nowhere. Then he notices that miners are dying in strangely psychotic ways -- walking in space without spacesuits, carving up prostitutes. With the help of Dr. Lazarus (Frances Sternhagen), his investigation reveals that the miners are ingesting a lethal drug that speeds their work efforts. He learns that the company that runs the town is behind the drug. He confronts the town boss Sheppard Peter Boyle and soon has two hit men heading toward Io with a plan to kill him. As the seconds tick down to the next space shuttle's arrival, O'Neil plots to meet them and faces the biggest challenge of his life. ~ Nick Sambides, Jr., Rovi

A sci-fi version of High Noon set in deep space, with an early 80's vision of the future, a great soundtrack, and some great performances. Connery is great, Sterhagen brilliant and Berkoff at his psychotic best. Underrated by many and passed off as just another sci-fi but it's a ... read morereally good thriller, a logical progression respectfully done with obvious affection to the original.

I liked Connery in this, but the story isn't good, and the rest of the cast is forgettable. I don't recommend this movie.

High Noon meets Alien with a pinch of noir. Fun and effective. Very watchable. Obviously an influence on the new BSG.

Outland takes place on the moon of Io, one of Jupiter's moons. Approximately 2500 people live on the tiny mining outpost, mining for titanium. The new marshall (Connery) arrives just as a series of strange suicides is taking place. The storyline of Outland reminds me a little ... read morebit of "Hot Fuzz", and the style of Outland is very reminiscent of "Alien". The marshall investigates why the company seems to be covering up the suicides, while the manager of the mining "franchise" (Peter Boyle) makes it clear he doesn't want the marshall interfering. Like an old western, the Manager waits for the shuttle (stagecoach) to arrive with the hired guns. Sort of a "High Noon" with a digital clock. In fact, it's all a space western (there's even swinging saloon doors!). Destry Rides Again, with the good-hearted Doctor woman lending him a little support. Even as a sci-fi fan, I can't say this movie is necessary viewing. It's slow, and there's not alot of action. The thing at the end with the green house is scientifically implausible, as is the fist fight in space suits and zero G. Still, it's not a bad movie, but it is a snoozer.

Not bad, not bad. Apparently this a huge ripoff of High Noon but I don't really give a shit. It's a nice, junky science fiction movie, full of exploding heads and Sean Connery shooting things with like five hundred different shotguns. (I typed "shotfuns" on accident and considere... read mored just leaving it.) The ending seems to have nothing to do with the beginning, since it starts as a mystery and ends as a violent space station chase scene, but I guess as a change in gears it's fine.

Fluffy, non-committal entertainment in every sense of the phrase.

Sean Connery kills druggy spacemen. I like when the guys face explodes outside. Not that entertaining as a whole.
  • September 9, 2007
Sci Fi action with Connery wielding a shotgun. Not too bad and it has some decent action.
  • July 14, 2007
Shaun Connery fights corruption and drug abuse on an outer space mining colony. There aren't any creatures here, only humans! I liked this suspenseful movie.
  • July 14, 2007
Efficient sci fi thriller that's basically High Noon made in the style of Alien. The family based scenes are a little embarrassing, but they are mercifully brief and infrequent.

"High Noon" goes sci-fi with Connery as a marshal on the Jupiter moon.

While there are several mile-wide plot holes and one key under-developed main character, the film emerges as a tight, intriguing old-fashioned drama that gives audiences a hero worth rooting for. Full Review

The failure of director-writer Peter Hyams to put any weight whatever behind the moral issues (crude as they are) makes this merely violent nonsense. Full Review

Because both dialogue and direction are none too exciting, one's tired eyes wander endlessly over the space base sets. Full Review

The early-going intrigue maintains interest, but once the film starts shamelessly riffing on High Noon, all the excitement fritters away. Full Review

...not a great movie but a reliable one, with another solid performance from Sean Connery, who always makes a staunch, stalwart protagonist of truly heroic proportions. Full Review

Connery and Boyle are fine, but the wholesale lifting of High Noon's plot certainly undermines interest. Full Review

Outland is essentially High Noon in outer space, and one of the most entertaining sci-fi flicks ever made.

This harrowing sci-fi flick has mellowed with age over the years, but Sean Connery's performance is still good, and the first couple of acts are still quite engaging. Full Review
