a pretty fun movie, even though i hate self-knowing badness. it's like the movies is giving you a smug smile and saying, "you can't hate me! i'm SUPPOSED to be bad."
it is unquestionably great filmmaking with one of the all time best casts, but i did think it was very slow and uninteresting at some points. not my favorite mob movie, i'm more of a Goodfellas kind of guy.
A Clockwork Orange is brilliantly strange and thought provoking, and it features Malcolm McDowell before he made the plunge into self-parody (joining others such as Ray Liotta after Goodfellas). and for the record, Kubrick is 0 for 2 in predicting the future.
for a while, it seems pretty simple, then the last 20 minutes punch you in the face for even thinking that. this movie makes Inception look simple and straightforward. it is second only to Star Wars for the greatest science-fiction film ever made. and i am quite disappointed that the real 2001 didn't actually turn out like this. oh well.
never quite delivers all the hair-raising suspense i hoped for, but its well acted and directed, and natalie Portman has come a long way from "Anakin.. you're breaking my heart!"
Forrest Gump is exhausting but entertaining, and Hanks doesn't overplay his role. you never go full retard. still, there are several moments where you can't help but cock a doubtful eyebrow.
how did we ever go from Close Encounters to this? did the alien genre take meth or something? it seems like the people who make skyline got most of their inspiration from Destroy All Humans.
not a very funny movie, but when it is funny it's because of the two leads. but what was up with all the pointless star cameos? Ray Liotta, you are no longer a good fella.
the plot is a work of genius, and Dicaprio gives a performance we never knew he was capable of giving. why was Wahlberg the only one who got nominated at the Oscars?
Blade Runner improves with memory. Harrison ford is great in it, and Roy played by Rutger hauer is even better. it's the rare sci-fi movie with great special effects that doesn't forget the story.
my Grandpa was in Vietnam, and he once told me that basic training was 'pretty easy'. after watching this film, i kind of doubt it. but it is just a movie, after all.
E.T. is entertaining, but it's not Spielberg's best movie, or even his best movie about aliens. it can't help but feel minor along with all his other masterpieces.
if there ever were an actual alien invasion, it would probably look something like Monsters. hopefully Edwards's Godzilla movie will take the same approach.
rango is the rare animated film that has the courage to push the boundaries of the PG rating. and does timothy olyphant do a great clint eastwood impression or what?
Skyfall looks great, and it contains enough humor to not be dead-serious of itself, while not adding too much in there. and Bardem can play one heck of a villain.
why do they spend the entire movie worrying about falling asleep, and then not even look scared when they actually do? it's stuff like this that ruins the movie.
i never thought in a million years i'd be bored watching a Tarantino movie, but so many scenes in Inglourious just go on for so long they seem to never end. Waltz and Pitt both play great characters though, and i wish they had been in it more.
i was expecting something like indiana jones, what i got was more like a 99 cent version of mission impossible. it's still entertaining enough that i almost got it up to 2.5, but there were too many stupid moments.
it's kind of like The A-Team (already bad) if The A-Team took itself seriously (even worse). i really didn't want to hate this movie, but i still kind of did.
it is ridiculously entertaining for all of its 122 minutes, and then when it's over, it makes you think. every single performance is noteworthy, right down to the old gas station owner.
