Bully 2001, R)
It is so dark and troubling. This film is worth a viewing by every parent of teenage children. It is not an easy movie to stomach as it is filled with heavy handed youth doom, addled by drugs and alcohol and sex. This gem is based on the novel by Jim Schutze "Bully: A True Story of High School Revenge. |

I did not see Charlize Theron, instead I saw Aileen Wuornos. I was disturbed and yet completely riveted with this movie. Aileen is a serial killer, a ruined soul and yet you would end up feeling sympathetic. It's depressing engaging, engrossing, and realistic. After that, I needed a silly comedy to lighten up. |

Schindler's List 1993, R)
Without a doubt, Schindler' s List is a cinematic masterpiece that clearly inspires and yet simultaneously horrifies. It vividly portrays the horrors of the Nazi effort to exterminate the Jewish inhabitants in German-occupied Europe while at the same time proving that one person, no matter how flawed and contradictory in nature he is, can rise to the occasion and make a difference. Violence is shown brutally and graphically. Some of the images are immensely powerful, stark and unrelenting. Truth be told, this film is heart-wrenching all the way through. Steven Spielberg successfully brought the saddest time of the 20th century into sharp and human focus. Other than each and every individual exemplary performances, the film's attention to detail is astounding. It was filmed entirely in gritty Black and White. He uses color in a couple of key spots. It is a historic film that touches the soul of all humanity. |

Amazing Grace 2006, PG)
What an amazing historical piece! My regret was not being able to watch this earlier. This film is about the fight of William Wilberforce to abolish British slavery in the early 18th Century. Ioan Gruffudd as Wilberforce is believable, complimented by an amazing casts like Albert Finney. The beautiful song Amazing Grace has long been one of my favorite songs, hearing and singing it in church during my younger years. |

Clint Eastwood behind the camera? Do not miss it. Jolie gives a convincing portrayal of a mother who returns home from work to find that her son Walter is missing. She calls the police and, after enduring a grueling 24 hours, they search for her son. But the boy they return 5 mths later to her is not her son. A gem of a period piece not to be missed. |

The Killing Fields 1984, R)
Dr. Haing S Ngor dominates this movie. Apparently he had never acted before. It tells the true story of Dith Pran, played by Cambodian survivor Haing S. Ngor, and his journey to escape the Khmer Rouge death camps which is an awful moment in human history. A movie that it is not easy to watch. Brutal and honest , the scene at the French embassy was the hardest to bear. My only gripe was that during certain scenes, the translation was poor some subtitles would have been much appreciated |

Hotel Rwanda 2004, PG-13)

| 77 |
Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2002, R)
Brutal and violent gang life in Rio De Janeiro. Crime and drugs are a norm with young kids toting guns in this notorious slum. Easily one of the best, fiercest foreign films I have seen. Gangster films always seem to make for good dramas. My only problem was I happen to purchase this DVD in Germany, there were only 2 subtitles and 1 dubbing available, German and Portugese. I wish I had paid more attention during my German class! |

Defiance 2008, R)
A true and inspirational story during the nightmarish Holocaust. Expect no less from director Edward Zwick who directed The last Samurai,Blood Diamond and Legends of the Fall. The story tells the survival of the three Bielski brothers during the Nazis occupation. It tells the story of the Fighting Jews. Daniel Craig held his own here. Although at times he has a tendency to lapse into his British accent. Liev Schreiber is always excellent. A film thats engaging from beginning till the end. Indeed it is one of the better movies of 2008. |

Good Morning, Vietnam 1987, R)
It is always a pleasure watching this film again. I truly enjoy Robin Williams's full-frontal comic intelligence. He is indeed a gifted chameleon, he could impesonate almost any character and makes viewers laughs. This one is a real treat after watching somber films about Vietnam, such as Platoon and Hamburger Hill. It is an uplifting film. It is loosely based on the true story of Adrian Cronauer, an air force radio DJ who was transferred to Vietnam. |

Friday Night Lights 2004, PG-13)
Based on a true story. Every one of the actors here is a gem in this movie. I got so caught up with the characters. The games scenes are also one of the best parts. It is sometimes difficult to watch the bone-crushing battles on the football field, Peter Berg captured every essence of the players very well. The personal pain, the joy and the pressure to succeed where football is everything in a little town called Odessa in Texas. The obsessive desire to win at almost any cost. |

Into the Wild 2007, R)
Part of me loved the film, the other part of me is wary of it. The scenery from the Alaskan wilderness is breathtaking, the phenomenal acting from Hirsh, the direction from Sean Penn, its marvelous. At times,I envy the true freedom that Christopher McCandless experience in the course of his adventures. Now comes the wary part. Being a parent myself, I wouldnt want my kid to give up on his career, family, everyone who loves him, just about everything to go trekking into the wild. It is hard to see how his parents especially his mother suffers and endures the pain of not knowing where her son may be. Christopher strikes me as immature and selfish, a boy who made the wrong decision and when he realised that, it was too late. |

Antwone Fisher 2002, PG-13)
Curious about Denzel 's directing debut and he starred in it as well, I decided to watch this. It is from an adaption of the book Finding Fish, based on the remarkable true memoirs of Antwone Fisher. This is truly a heartfelt story, the story of obstacles overcome. with impressive acting from Derek Luke. It is extremely difficult to remain dry eyed for long. A movie that I will not forget easily and a salute is in order. |

Nothing But the Truth 2008, R)
Kate B is a very good actress, so good that I admire and despise her character here. Watching her performance throughout the movie, at first I rooted for her, felt her pain, admired her integrity but later despised her for putting innocent lives in danger in order to protect her source and stand by her integrity. Jeopardising her marriage and her relationship with her young son. The plot loosely incorporates the real-life drama of former CIA agent Valerie Plame and New York Times writer Judith Miller (who served 85 days in jail on the same charges). A brilliantly provocative film I must say. |

Battle in Seattle 2007, R)
Absolutely riveting from start till end! Did not expect such good and memorable work from Stuart Townsend debut. It is interesting that he mixed actual footage supplied by Seattle television stations during the 1999 five days long riots with his direction, There s an impressive cast of talented actors here, including Martin Henderson, Michelle Rodriguez, Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Carpenter, Andre Benjamin, Ray Liotta, Connie Nielsen, Channing Tatum and Townsend's partner, Charlize Theron. This film creates awareness for one who s not familiar with the cause of the protestors during the WTO s convention. An interesting line from the movie: Mayor Tobin requests that protesters be tough on the issues but gentle on his town. Proof that anything sounds possible as long as politicians can find a clever way to say it. |

| 87 |
The Newton Boys 1998, PG-13)
A true story of the Newton brothers, who are regarded as the most successful bank robbers in the history of the United States. Takes place sometime the early roaring 1920s.The film smells distinctly of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Oh well, women, girls are going to love this. All 4 Texan Newton brothers were played by bright eyes wonders McConaughey ,Hawke,D'Onofrio and Ulrich and they are pleasing to the eyes. Might cringed at some of the most stupefying antics of the bankrobbing scenes. Overall an average but not a great movie. |

The Young Victoria 2009, PG)
The Young Victoria is a visual treat, sumptuous, gorgeous-looking period piece. The story is not compelling but it is good enough to keep one entertained. Hinging on a beguiling performance from Blunt, the superb acting compensates for the lack of high drama. Emily Blunt is victorious playing the young queen of England the empire's longest reigning ruler in her early years. |

Max, Maya, Jack, Buck, Dewey, Shadow, Shorty, and Truman. They are the true stars of the film. These furry heroes upstage the two-legged actors easily. Also I needed this to educate and inspire my little man to treat our Husky pooch right. |

Michael Collins 1996, R)
A not to be missed for any enthusiast of Irish history or fans of good films. There's much about this film that will please viewers, the dramatic content together with a generally informative look at the Irish independence movement. Michael Collins' short and tragic story has become a legend in the hearts of the Irish. The film sets out to recount the final years of Michael Collins' life through struggles for Irish independence. The story is dynamic and powerful and Neeson is excellent as the politically astute figure, seizing his part with a passion and boldness. Supported by a first rate cast except for Julia Roberts, her portrayal of Neeson 's love interest Kitty Kiernan is unconvincing as her Irish accent. |

American Violet 2008, PG-13)
Based on a true-life miscarriage of justice, Dee Roberts played by Nicole Beharie who finds her life turned upside down when she is falsely arrested for selling crack cocaine. She is offered a hellish choice: plead guilty and go home as a convicted felon or remain in prison and fight the charges thus, jeopardizing her custody and risking a long prison sentence. I found that Nicole is absolutely radiant in her debut role. This docudrama also tackles the issue of racism in the legal system in the US. Melody the town in Texas was ruled with an iron fist by the racist redneck local authorities and a conviction hungry D.A. The violet of the title refers to Dee's wilting house plant, which miraculously springs back to life because of her refusal to accept defeat and allow it to perish. Overall a good drama but could have been better, did not inspire, lack the feeling of triumphant elation at the end. |

Fugitive Pieces 2007, R)
A beautiful, poignant and a remarkable tale about a Holocaust survivor. The book that is.....however great literature is often not the friend of film adapters. The film had a promising start then became quite dull towards the half of the film. The one fatal flaw is that I couldn t feel the connection, the pain and suffering he went through when he was a child during the Nazi occupation in Poland. He,actor Dillane provides a flat portrayal that dooms Jakob as an adult. Jumping back and forth the way the film does only turns a complicated, traumatized man into a passive cipher. |

Hachiko: A Dog's Story (Hachiko: A Dog's Tale) 2009, G)
Years ago, when I saw a bronze statue of a dog at the Shibuya Station in Tokyo, Japan, I did not paid much attention to it. In my defense, everything was in Japanese, and I was more concerned of finding my way back. Little did I know, it happens to be a true story of a beautiful friendship and undying loyalty between the dog Hachiko and his owner and is truly respected by the Japanese. Hachiko, an Akita breed used to wait every day at the Shibuya train station for its owner, a professor at the University of Tokyo. He even waited for a decade after the professor had died. Hachiko, November 10, 1923 -March 8, 1935. This is the remake of a 1987 Japanese film, wonderfully played by Richard Gere as Parker Wilson. A movie that pet lovers would love, guaranteed even to make a grown man cry. There is one scene that made me bawled, was the scene of his widow returning to the town, and finding old and tired Hachiko still waiting for his master's return. |

Heavenly Creatures 1994, R)
Once upon a time, there was an unknown but a very gifted filmmaker name Peter Jackson. This was a time before the fantasy world of Middle Earth,Elves,Orcs and Hobbits. There was Heavenly Creatures, from a secret world no one could see, came a crime no one could believe. It is a bizarre and shocking masterpiece but true. Until Heavenly Creatures arrived, Kate Winslet had never starred in a film before. This was her debut. Melanie Lynskey, saw her in supporting roles in Sweet Home Alabama and Coyote Ugly, both forgettable. Here she hits just the right pitch by playing the quintessential dark and moody Pauline Parker. When she shoots one of her murderous mad glares, I find that I do not want to be in the same room with her. The girls who are misfits in school share and intense "me against the world" friendships and Jackson does a brilliant job showing the depth of friendship and relationship between the adolescent girls. Definitely one of the memorable films of the early 90s. |

The Basketball Diaries 1995, R)
Although the title is Basketball Diaries, it is a film that portrays more crime and drugs than shooting hoops. Leonardo Dicaprio, he seems incapable of making a false move on screen. Impressive in What's eating Gilbert Grape and This Boy's Life.He was perfect at playing a conflicted, charming and doomed young Jim Caroll. It is not a happy movie. There are scenes of Dicaprio going through harrowing sequences of addication. It is disgusting, frightening and depressingly sad. Aided by a strong supporting cast, especially a young Mark Wahlberg as his closest junkie pal, Mickey. |

The Blind Side 2009, PG-13)
Speed 2, Miss Congeniality 2 and finally the worst of the lot, All about Steve. All transgressions and sins are forgiven after redeeming herself in The Blind Side. It is absolutely wonderful to watch a film that is high on hope and inspiration. Bullock proves once more that after Crash, she fares better at drama than slapstick comedies. She is a wealthy and an exemplary Christian woman who takes in a poor, homeless black teen from the wrong side of tracks and nurtures him to a great success is in my opinion her best career to date. She is a spitfire of a mom, a force of nature and it is the kind of smart and sassy role that she should have be given long ago. The others actors did complete justice to their characters too. A good movie based on a true story |

Iron Jawed Angels 2004, Unrated)
It is an interesting but true fact that that other nations like England, New Zealand, Russia and some other countries all gave women the vote before America did. A truly remarkable story with an impressive casts. Strong performances from its leads, and Hilary Swank and Frances O'Connor. Swank portrays an American feminist who risked her life to fight for women's citizenship and the right to vote. Swank certainly proves she's got what it takes to play this indomitable spirit. This HBO feature is an inspiring but also an excruciating look at what women were willing to sacrifice and what humiliations they were willing to endure to secure a woman's right to vote even as America stood on the precipice of WWI. The movie does not flinch away from the brutality that women suffered while in prison. Lookout for Vera Farmiga. |

At Close Range 1986, R)
The movie has a very slow buildup but it is dramatically satisfying. The cast alone is worth renting this movie for. Walken's searing performance as the cold-blooded, white trash sociopath. A youthful Sean Penn is mesmerizing and powerful on screen. He plays Walken's firstborn, Brad. The early part of the movie is showing Brad Jr's initial idolization of his father to later loathing him. As much as I was drawn to the story, I would never want to view it again, truly tragic. Based on a true story. |

The Girl Next Door 2007, R)
Outstanding performances from the young actors lead the way. The entire young casts deserves accolades. It is unflinchingly brutal and a heartbreaking film. It shows a side of the human race so vile that most people cannot wrap their minds around. This film was inspired by a real crime that took place in Indianapolis in 1965. The movie: An American Crime. A True Tale of Teen Torture. |

Romulus, My Father 2007, R)
The spectacular performance from young actor,Kodi Smit Mcphee in The Road lead me to this heartbreaking but uplifting film. Here, he is a boy torn between longing for his mother, anxiety and frustration at her inability to be the parent he needs. It was told with impeccable simplicity. It is an incredibly slow paced film and it relies on the strength of its actors to thrive, it also becomes more realistic and gives you a reason to care what happens to these people. Eric Bana plays the father who endured the loneliness of migration to an isolated rural community; the desertion of his wife who left him for the brother of her best friend; the experience of betrayal; of suicide and madness. Coming from Raimond Gaita's noted memoir, this movie follows the writer's young life in Australia during the 1960s. |

The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler 2009, Unrated)
Irena Sendler is an amazing woman who had accomplished the extraordinary. Because of the will of one person, many children were granted the precious gift of life. One can only imagine the atrocities committed by the Nazis in Poland. Children were starved to death, tortured, buried and burned alive, gunned down, murdered in the gas chambers. With the help of other resistance workers, she would have the children smuggled out of the Ghetto in suitcases, shipping boxes, wheelbarrows - anything that could hold a child. |

I Love You Phillip Morris 2009, R)
A gay themed love story, so outrageous but somewhat true story of a Texas conman played brilliantly by Jim Carrey. This thespian surprises me every now and then with a truly genuine performance. He is wildly hilarious and gave a portrayal that is vividly moving simultaneously. Ewan McGregor gets to share passionate and romantic moments with funnyman, Carrey. He too is capable of reminding us of how extraordinary he can be. A highly entertaining cinematic journey indeed. |

Mao's Last Dancer 2010, PG)
It is an inspiring and captivating true story of dancer Li Cunxin. The remarkable Birmingham Royal Ballet principal dancer Chi Cao debuted as Li, achieving extraordinary emotional impact easily. The real force of the film, comes more from the magic of the dance than the story of Li's life who was plucked from his poverty-stricken rural family in Shandong province at age 11 to train at the Beijing Dance Academy. An award winning Australian filmmaker Beresford captures the beauty of the ballet sequences, and that's beautiful to watch. |

The Runaways 2010, R)
The Runaways actually captures the energy of the rock n roll music. The two main leads, Fanning and Stewart, both actors did their roles justice. I had been a fan of Dakota Fanning since she debut with Sean Penn in I am Sam and she gave a solid and compelling performance. KStew, whom I was getting tired of her mumbling and stumbling in Twilight series, delivered a very intense but good performance as Joan Jett. She had her posture, her manner, her expressions and the way she blazes her electric guitar. I was truly mesmerised. Rock n Roll dominated the '70s and it shows how it can save your life and almost wreck it simultaneously. |

This is the story of how one family found a gateway into understanding their son's autism. Rowan requires constant supervision. Their only son suffers uncontrollable and unpredictable tantrums and chronic incontinence. His parents try to soothe him but his eyes look vacant, and their touch can't reach him. By chance, they discovered an interesting connection between Rowan and horses. It is uplifting and amazing to see how the parents put everything in their lives on hold and journeyed to Ulaanbaatar, and took Rowan to the vast Mongolian landscapes where Shamanism is the primary religion and a common practice of healing in this remarkable true story. |

Beneath Hill 60 2010, R)
As far as Aussie war drama goes, the great Gallipoli is the better recognized one, a gem from Peter Weir. It seems we simply never run out of stories borne of war, unlike Hollywood, who are currently obsessed with making movies about the war in and with the Middle East, it was a breath of fresh air to view an engrossing WW1 piece at Western Front which not only focuses on the soldiers but the miners too, the men from the1st Australian Tunnelling Company, painfully dug tunnels underneath enemy lines, to aid the advance of British troops and responsible for the collapse of hill 60 in Belgium. The mighty blast consisting of 19 mines killed approximately ten thousand German soldiers and was heard as far away as the United Kingdom. This one here is a truly inspiring Australian victory. And last of all, this happens to be a true story which succeeds to keep you at the edge of your seats and pinch your heartstrings altogether. |

I think I forgot to swallow and I forgot to breathe too during THAT scene. I watched through fingers fanned in front of eyes! I love James Franco, for taking this role and making it as real as it felt. The portrayal of hiker Aron Ralston, this amazing person with a truly remarkable spirit. |

The King's Speech 2010, PG-13)
This is the true story of a king with a stutter and the man who helps him overcome it. It is a story without all the 3D fanfare, without the gore, without the sex and yet it is enormously entertaining and much more gratifying than any ridiculous action movies. Colin Firth. I was mesmerized by his excellent performance. This challenging role presents him as a top notch actor. Geoffrey Rush.Terrific as the unorthodox Australian speech therapist. Their friendship: funny and touching, their natural charm and effortless chemistry is a big part of what makes the film so endearing. And Helena Bonham Carter, usually known for her strange, outrageous choice of characters was a treat as the supportive Queen Elizabeth. A true story with a fascinating history lesson and it is really a direct and heartfelt piece of work from all involved. |

Soul Surfer 2011, PG)
This is the incredible true story of a promising surfer who dreamt of going Pro, Bethany Hamilton. It is about a girl who is extremely passionate about surfing and how she overcame a tragedy. Hamilton lost her left arm in a shark attack in 2003, yet she overcomes adversity to become a champion surfer. The story itself was fascinating and it kept my interest most of the time, however her uplifting underdog story had been sugarcoated and inserted with far too many religious subtext. This film came off presenting it in that light. Robb plays Bethany with a wonderful humanity. I believe playing a real, living person is always challenging for any actor, and she does a great job of capturing Bethany Hamilton's genuinely courageous attitude. Soul surfer is still a good movie to watch even it may fall apart with some of its cheesy dialogues. Amazing movie locations with its stunning surf photography, fans of Blue Crush would enjoy it. |

James Dean 2001, PG)

Fair Game 2010, PG-13)
Not to be confused with the 1995 bomb that starred William Baldwin and Cindy Crawford. This new movie is a true account depicting the Bush Administration's outing of CIA covert agent Valerie Plame Wilson.Though she had faithfully served the CIA for 15 years, the government had still hung her out to dry for political gain. It is led by a great casts, topped with fantastic performances by the leads. Honest and thoroughly straight forward work that is difficult to tear one's eyes away from. Coming from the director of The Bourne Identity, would you expect any less? |

Made in Dagenham 2010, R)
A charming and disarming underdog story with a feminist bite. The female machinists who labored at the Ford's plant in the industrial town of Dagenham, went on strike in 1968 for equal pay and their true battle tale is genuinely uplifting. Their campaign culminated two years later with the passage of equal pay legislation for women in England. |

Soldier's Girl 2003, R)
This is a haunting and tragic true story. The story that is incredibly moving was told with absolute mastery. Soldier's Girl is based on the story of Private Winchell, a naïve and earnest young man, who fell in love with a transgendered nightclub performer and how rumors about that love affair ultimately cost him his life. Troy Garity took on the role of the soldier, his acting was stellar and Lee Pace is magnificent at playing Calpernia Addams. And what makes it so heartbreakingly effective is the powerful chemistry between Troy Garity and Lee Pace. They really made the movie memorable. |

Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story 2011, Unrated)
As a parent, the worst fear in life is losing a child. This is a captivating true story of Tiffany Rubin. It tells of her fight to rescue her son Kobe, who was abducted and taken to South Korea by his biological father. Child abductions are serious matters and international abductions are even more difficult with daunting international laws to be followed. However a mother's love knows no bounds. With limited aid from the authorities and no money to hire a private investigator, she turned to Mark Miller, the founder of the non-profit organization: The American Association for Lost Children. Together they bravely rescued her son and brought him home. This movie was heartfelt, supported by a quality cast with an emphasis on story and drama. We would feel the heartache and struggles that families go through when seemingly impossible situations strike. What would you do if you were placed in a situation such as hers? |

Uprising 2001, Unrated)
This is a well orchestrated telling of a true story. After Germany invades Poland in 1939, the Nazis decree that 350,000 Warsaw Jews be forcibly moved into an area known as the Warsaw Ghetto. The director and his casts did this film justice by capturing the heartache and misfortune of the oppressed Jews during this unforgettable era. Thousands of Jews died due to rampant disease and starvation under the SS. It may not be as brilliant as The Pianist but it is one that not to be missed. |
