Jurassic Park 1993, PG-13)
Visual effects would never have broken through without this movie, which is Spielberg's best adventure since the first "Indiana Jones" movie. Jurassic Park is probably the best 'creature feature'/'Blockbuster' since Jaws, which was obviously bought to us by the same beard. Spielberg doing what he does best with brilliant special effects that are still as good if not better than in recent films and a fantastic cast. One of my favourite cinema experiences! This was the first big, realistic looking CGI film and that was the big draw to this film upon release, but it contains an interesting story that keeps you in the film longer than computerized eye candy ever would. It's the typical Spielberg adventure tale that puts everyone in peril, yet everything is alright in the end tied up in a nice and neat John Williams score. Jurassic Park is not an intelligent film that comments seriously about cloning and the dangers of human tampering with movie nature, though the themes are bought up occasionally in the film. The film IS however, a thrilling ride of the lines of man vs monsters. Special effects are superb: the dinosaurs are living, breathing creatures that still convince 15 years later. Director Spielberg superbly handles the action and Crichton's script skillfully builds up the tension before heading into all out action, thrills and scares. Less successfully are the performances from the human cast with Sam Neil and Laura Dern in particular phoning in their performances while Joe Mazzello's uncanny ability keep surviving after several normally fatal situations, is a tad ridiculous to say the least. However these are relatively minor flaws, because whether on the big screen, or on video, Jurassic Park delivers amply as a thrilling blockbuster. love it always. |

Dazed and Confused 1993, R)
Like George Lucas' American Graffiti, Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused is an affectionate look at the youth culture of a bygone era. While Lucas took aim at the conservative 1950's, Linklater jumps ahead a generation to the bicentennial year of 1976 to celebrate the joys of beer blasts, pot smoking and Frampton Comes Alive. Set on the last day of the academic year, the film follows the random activities of a sprawling group of Texas high schoolers as they celebrate the arrival of summer, their paths variously intersecting at a freshmen hazing, a local pool parlor and finally at a keg party. |
