The Most Overrated Movies I've Seen

  1. jjb3332003
  2. Jeff

This list was not just thrown together; it was constructed scientifically based upon the difference between my ratings and the average. Thus, there are certain movies I do think are good - just not great - found here. A movie also needs to have been rated at least 20,000 times to qualify.

Page Views
  jjb3332003's Rating My Rating
Skyfall 2012,  PG-13)
Even worse than "Die Another Day' and "Quantum of Solace." At least they started out halfway promising before degenerating into a mess. This had absolutely nothing going for it from the get-go. My new most overrated movie ever.
Transformers 2007,  PG-13)
Bay, LeBeouf, Fox...I was expecting to hate this. Considering they were just the tip of the iceberg of annoying factors I would say my expectations were met in spades. I have not been so utterly bored in quite some time.
Wild At Heart 1990,  R)
Wild At Heart
I think I have found a director to rank alongside the Coen Brothers. Willem Dafoe however was brilliant as usual.
8 1/2 1963,  Unrated)
8 1/2
Highly disappointing. Perhaps it was the black and white, or the surrealism, or everyone smoking, or, most probably, the annoying abundance of overdubbing, but I simply did not like this at all. I guess I should've known when I saw Terry Gilliam had an intro to the film on the version I watched that it wouldn't suit my tastes. In any case, I found this to be extremely overrated.
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys) 1995,  R)
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys)
I gave this movie two chances - it was just as lame the second time
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb 1964,  PG)
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Kubrick is probably my favorite director. That being said, I was very leery of him helming a farcial movie. My fears were upheld as I found this extremely disappointing. The only scenes I thought were decent were the combat scenes and those clearly weren't the focus here. Peter Sellers was funny to me as a child but I equate watching him to watching Gilligan's Island-just not the same anymore. I chalk this up as yet another highly overrated "classic."
The Lost Boys 1987,  R)
Batman Returns 1992,  PG-13)
Dogma 1999,  R)
gave it a second chance and I hated it almost as much as the first time I watched it.
M*A*S*H 1970,  PG)
I thought the show was boring enough, the movie was just stupid. Horrible writing and bad directing/acting. Pierce and McIntyre are two of the most annoying characters in film history, and none of the others are much better.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels 1999,  R)
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Yet another overrated Cockney-fest from Guy Ritchie.
Yellow Submarine 1968,  G)
Yellow Submarine
Notwithstanding the fact that I'm not a Beatles fan, I still found this to be a nonsensically psychadelic piece of crap. Even the animation was poor.
Cool Hand Luke 1967,  PG)
Cool Hand Luke
Suffers from overdramatic elements, as many films from that era did. The Christ allegory is trite as well.
Duel 1972,  PG)
What a snorefest! This movie should've been over after 20 minutes except we have an idiotic main character named David Mann who thinks that driving 65 mph is fast and who likes banging his head against a wall.
Twilight 2008,  PG-13)
If you like teen soap drama with horrible music and nothing original about it then perhaps this movie is for you.
Metropolis (Metoroporisu) 2002,  PG-13)
Metropolis (Metoroporisu)
Despite some cool animation I found this boring and a bit pretentious. I'd rather watch the original or, better yet, Blade Runner.
Van Helsing 2004,  PG-13)
Van Helsing
highly disappointing
Metropolis 1927,  PG-13)
The story was interesting, and I appreciate how far ahead of it's time the film was, but mostly I was bored in watching it. This must have been an extremely long movie in it's entirety.
The Big Blue 1988,  R)
The Hangover 2009,  R)
The Hangover
Absolutely and utterly stupid. The rapist undertones rampant throughout the movie were appalling.
Lethal Weapon 2 1989,  R)
Lethal Weapon 2
They should've left it alone after the first one. There's nothing good to say here.
Quantum of Solace 2008,  PG-13)
Quantum of Solace
How quickly a series can degenerate once again. There are so many things bad about this movie I'm not even going to bother. Probably the worst Bond movie ever.
The Natural 1984,  PG)
The Natural
Wow...not much good to say about this one. Robert Redford was nearly 50 in real life and played an 18-year-old in the beginning. Enough said.
Malcolm X 1992,  PG-13)
Crank 2006,  R)
I was hoping for something like The Transporter, instead I got something more like a cheese sandwich.
Hercules 1997,  G)
horrible...even for a Disney movie.
The Big Lebowski 1998,  R)
The Big Lebowski
Yet another overrated Coen Brother movie. If it wasn't for John Goodman this would be a complete waste of time.
The Patriot 2000,  R)
The Patriot
Dark City 1998,  R)
Dark City
wannabe cult movie is vastly overrated - even Jennifer Connelly can't save it
Waking Ned Devine 1998,  PG)
Waking Ned Devine
This was just silly.
Repulsion 1965,  Unrated)
The Last Unicorn 1982,  G)
Moulin Rouge! 2001,  PG-13)
Moulin Rouge!
The king of overrated neo-musicals.
Bringing Up Baby 1938,  Unrated)
Bringing Up Baby
Baby was adorable, the rest was just plain silly.
Titus 1999,  R)
The Party 1968,  PG)
The Party
This was rather humdrum.
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life 1983,  R)
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life
Eh...not really a Monty Python fan.
Vertigo 1958,  PG)
Had the "mystery" not been solved halfway through the movie perhaps this would've been better. After that, the rest of the film seemed to be building toward something but then it just fell flat at the end. Barbara Bel Geddes (Miss Ellie from Dallas) stole the show for me in her limited screen time.
Pineapple Express 2008,  R)
Pineapple Express
I'd much rather watch a Cheech & Chong movie. This just got way too silly.
The Wild Bunch 1969,  R)
The Wild Bunch
Any movie opening with the killing of actual animals does not rate highly with me - and it never got any better; unless you like to see a bunch of assholes shooting and luaghing, laughing and shooting. This falls just behind another western Peckinpah dud (The Ballad of Cable Hogue) on my list of most overrated movies here on Flixster, virtually guaranteeing him a spot on my list of most overrated directors.
Highlander 1986,  R)
Shrek 2001,  PG)
Sexual innuendos, animal cruelty, horrible music, and an overdose of Cameron Diaz...great family fun.
Fargo 1996,  R)
Gone With the Wind 1939,  G)
Gone With the Wind
I havn't seen this since I was a kid. It's funny how my memory has proven itself to be true to my current feelings however. This movie is long, boring, overdramatic, and overblown. Give me North & South any day.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 2003,  PG-13)
Oklahoma! 1955,  G)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 1989,  PG-13)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Though not as bad as I remembered, it is still by far the weakest of the trio. The supporting cast of stooges (yes, even Sean Connery), the annoying Elsa, and some horrible special fx drag this down.
Demolition Man 1993,  R)
Demolition Man
I remember seeing this when it first came out, thinking it wasn't half-bad. What the HELL was I thinking?! This movie was everything that is bad - horrendous casting and acting, god-awful script, stupid plot, and blatantly commercial product-placement. About the only thing it didn't do wrong was leave itself open for a sequel.
Cape Fear 1991,  R)
Cape Fear
garyX hit the nail on the head with his review of this film. Surprisingly melodramatic and schlocky from Scorsese, made even worse by the horrible cast (even DeNiro was terribly misplaced). Moreover, there was absolutely no feeling of suspense present whatsoever.
Wag the Dog 1997,  R)
Wag the Dog
Even more lame than I remembered.
Waitress 2007,  PG-13)
One of those movies that thinks it's cute and cool and simply isn't.
The Faculty 1998,  R)
The Dark Crystal 1982,  PG)
The Dark Crystal
Rather boring. I expected much more from Jim Henson. The best thing I can say about this movie is Crystal Method's sampling job on Trip Like I Do...
The Mask of Zorro 1998,  PG-13)
The Mask of Zorro
Just silly. I suppose they'll remake The Lone Ranger next and ruin another classic character.
Raising Arizona 1987,  PG-13)
The King and I 1956,  G)
The King and I
I'd rather watch Anna and the King.
The Wizard of Oz 1939,  PG)
The Wizard of Oz
I hadn't seen this since I was a kid. I had no fond memories of it. I can now say I still have none. This was painful to watch.
The Return of the Pink Panther 1975,  G)
Beetlejuice 1988,  PG)
I don't understand the fascination with this movie. Tim Burton can be good, but is more often overrated. Winona Ryder is highly annoying here as well.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure 1989,  PG)
Mr. & Mrs. Smith 2005,  PG-13)
Scent of a Woman 1992,  R)
Three Kings 1999,  R)
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? 1966,  R)
Ice Age 2002,  PG)
The Wedding Date 2005,  PG-13)
The Wedding Date
Weak story, poor casting, corny soundtrack, and awful chemistry made for a long hour and a half.
Miller's Crossing 1990,  R)
Miller's Crossing
I wish the Coen brothers never made any movies
Astro Boy (AstroBoy) 2009,  PG)
Astro Boy (AstroBoy)
I'm guessing the comic/Japanese original is better than this Disnefied piece of crap. The only saving grace is the awesome animation.
A Fistful of Dollars (Per un Pugno di Dollari) 1964,  R)
A Fistful of Dollars (Per un Pugno di Dollari)
Blow-Up 1966,  Unrated)
Though better than I remembered, rather boring and annoyingly mod.
Beauty and the Beast 2012,  G)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 1962,  G)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Nothing really special here except Lee Marvin's performance.
Bee Movie 2007,  PG)
Bee Movie
Other than the general message that "bees are good," this was about as bad as I thought it'd "bee."
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor 2008,  PG-13)
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
As terrible as I suspected. Pretty much everything possibly bad is found here and nothing good. Even worse than Transformers.
P.S. I Love You 2007,  PG-13)
P.S. I Love You
It's always hard to like a movie when the main character is unlikeable. And, though there were some funny moments, the writing wasn't the greatest either.
Blade: Trinity 2004,  R)
Barton Fink 1991,  R)
Barton Fink
Yet another overrated Coen Brother production. John Goodman was really good though.
The Producers 1968,  PG)
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar 1995,  PG-13)
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar
Compared to Priscilla this is just plain silly.
Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs) 2002,  R)
Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs)
Extremely disappointing. Here is a rare case of the Americanized version being vastly supeior to the original. The opening was lame, the score horrendous, and the directing overdramatic at times. The cover art (not the one here but the one generally seen, is also misrepresentative. Then they milked this baby for a prequel and a sequel. Yikes.
Interview with the Vampire 1994,  R)
The 300 Spartans 1962,  Unrated)
Feast 2005,  R)
The A-Team 2010,  PG-13)
The A-Team
I was pleasantly surprised for the first half or so, but it went drastically downhill in direct proportion to Jessica Biel's screentime.
In the Mood for Love 2001,  PG)
In the Mood for Love
Rather boring, but with a certain artistic flair.
Rumble Fish 1983,  R)
Rumble Fish
Pretnetious and artsy-fartsy. I assume this was filmed at the same time as The Outsiders considering they were released in the same year and had a lot of shared cast members (the strength of both movies). Coppola is so hit-or-miss.
Thirteen Ghosts (13 Ghosts) 2001,  R)
The Fisher King 1991,  R)
The Fisher King
Like "Cloak & Dagger" for grown-ups -and that's not a good thing. Jeff Bridges stinks up the screen as he so often does. It had a touching moment in the middle, but that was all too fleeting. How a man who could produce "Brazil" can come up with so much garbage I don't know...
Trainspotting 1996,  R)
Extremely disappointing. I didn't find anything special about this.
GoldenEye 1995,  PG-13)
I had thought the first one or two Pierce Brosnan Bonds were all right. Boy was I wrong! I won't even begin to go into all the things they f'ed up.
The Basketball Diaries 1995,  R)
The Basketball Diaries
A downward spiral movie that belongs in the toilet.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones 3D 2002,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones 3D
The abomination of the Star Wars saga continues. Almost from the get-go I just wanted this to be over. There were a couple interesting pieces to the historical plot puzzle but mostly this was just an overdone special effects fest with wooden dialogue (particularly Samuel Jackson), ridiculous situations, and corny humor. Ewan McGregor was the only bright spot as a younger Obi Wan. At least we weren't subjected to much of the most annoying character in film history - Jar Jar Binks.
Vampires 1998,  R)
Right down there with "The Lost Boys" and "Twilight."
A Lot Like Love 2005,  PG-13)
A Lot Like Love
Usually liking movies Ashton and Amanda are in I wanted to like this movie. After reading the promo though I was quite skeptical - with good reason. This film was horrible. I don't blame the actors as they had decent chemistry and carried out their roles, but the writing was weak, the plot ridiculous, and it made horrible use of music (ruining some otherwise good songs). There also seemed moments where the director had the actors ad-lib and the attempts at humor in these spots was just lame. Thumbs down.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 - Freddy's Revenge 1985,  R)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 - Freddy's Revenge
What a horrible sequel. Does Kim Myers look just like Meryl Streep or what?
The Expendables 2010,  R)
The Expendables
This has all been done before. It's called the A-Team. Movies, or anything in life, with an obvious quota are highly annoying.
Carlito's Way 1993,  R)
Carlito's Way
Sorry, dude. Trying to remake Scarface just doesn't work this time. I think De Palma had a midlife crisis when he hit 50 because all the movies I've seen him do since then have typically been overdramatic. Throw in a poor choice of music, the horrible acting job by Penelope Ann Miller, and the just plain annoying narration and this is the result. Sean Penn's performance, as always, was stellar.
The Fourth Kind 2009,  PG-13)
The Fourth Kind
This was painful to watch. The ridiculous Blair Witch has sparked a whole genre of crap.
A Knight's Tale 2001,  PG-13)
A Knight's Tale
There's a lot wrong with this movie and not much right. Somebody please put an end to scoring historical films with modern music. Please.
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen 1989,  PG)
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Yet another overrated Terry Gilliam production.
Alpha Dog 2007,  R)
Alpha Dog
This movie was a mess; awful directing.
Miss Congeniality 2000,  PG-13)
A Room With A View 1985,  R)
A Room With A View
Usually I am a fan of period pieces but I found this one exceedingly boring.
See No Evil, Hear No Evil 1989,  R)
See No Evil, Hear No Evil
I thought this would be funnier.
Bonnie and Clyde 1967,  R)
Bonnie and Clyde
Not as good as I remembered. Rather monotonous - bank job, Bonnie gets depressed, gun fight, blah blah blah...
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time 2010,  PG-13)
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Ahhh what can I say...terrible casting, directing, writing, and an abundance of bad CGI. Whoever knew there were so many Brits running around in ancient Persia, or so much alcohol being consumed. I sure didn't. The ending was seen 10 million miles away. Another fine example of how to take a classic computer game and absolutely ruin it. Another typical Disnefied POS.
Empire Records 1995,  PG-13)
Empire Records
Rush Hour 2 2001,  PG-13)
Rush Hour 2
Too silly for my tastes.
Zulu 1964,  PG)
All right from a historical and tactital perspective, but the fakeness of the fight scenes and the overall lack of menace detracted from the mood.
Rocky V 1990,  PG-13)
The First Wives Club 1996,  PG)
The First Wives Club
Watching spoiled, middle-aged women feel sorry for themselves is not my cup of tea.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978,  PG)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Yet another example of an interesting concept with very poor execution...
The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past 2009,  PG-13)
The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Happily N'ever After 2006,  PG)
Do the Right Thing 1989,  R)
Do the Right Thing
I have no idea why this movie is regarded highly. It's very average, and Spike Lee is very overrated.
Step Brothers 2008,  R)
Step Brothers
I love Will Ferrell, but this was just silly. There weren't very many funny moments.
Blue Velvet 1986,  R)
Blue Velvet
This just in - David Lynch can now officially join my most over-rated director's club. Even though I knew this was a cult fave, my expectations were low after having seen "Wild at Heart" (the most over-rated movie of all time). I actually thought it was halfway decent, but the ending was just plain silly. And Isabella Rossellini's acting even made Laura Dern look good.
Charlie's Angels - Full Throttle 2003,  PG-13)
Charlie's Angels - Full Throttle
Having suffered through this at the theater, I knew this was one of the worst movies I had ever seen, Now I can safely say it is THE worst.
24 Hour Party People 2002,  R)
24 Hour Party People
Interesting to learn a bit of the background of Joy Division/New Order but otherwise not much special here.
Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason 2004,  R)
Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason
Some good music saves this from being a complete disaster.
X-Men: The Last Stand 2006,  PG-13)
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra 2009,  PG-13)
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
A bit better than I expected. The action scenes and technological gadgets partially offset the terrible acting, weak writing, and horrid casting. By the last half hour or so though I almost completely lost track of the storyline I was so caught up in Mystery Science Theatering it's ass. If I had to take a drink for every bad one-liner Ana uttered, every change in accent Destro delivered, and every jaw clench Duke displayed I would be dead.
Dying Young 1991,  R)
Dying Young
While it got better at the end, there was enough sap to brew a fine batch of maple syrup. Julia Roberts is not a good actress; and even less so toward the beginning of her career. And the 80's feel (not in a good way) was made even worse by the awful Kenny G sax solos.
As Good As It Gets 1997,  PG-13)
As Good As It Gets
I am still in shock by the utter stupidity of this movie.
The Game 1997,  R)
The Game
Utterly ridiculous and reeking with pretention throughout. An absolute waste of two hours.
Die Another Day 2002,  PG-13)
Die Another Day
(This movie epitomizes why Halle Berry is an overrated actress; but she's not even the worst here - that dishonor goes to Madonna). Not only the worst Bond movie, but one of the worst films ever.
The Emperor's New Groove 2000,  G)
The Emperor's New Groove
Yet another POS Disney movie.
The Losers 2010,  PG-13)
The Losers
Horribly Hollywood. Almost as bad as Crank. Almost.
Gremlins 1984,  PG)
I liked it as a wee lad. Now it's just stupid. Pretty violent for a PG movie.
The Sweetest Thing 2002,  R)
The Sweetest Thing
What a waste of 1 1/2 hours. Has perhaps the worst single scene in a movie I've ever seen. Or maybe that's the two worst scenes...
The Brave One 2007,  R)
The Brave One
*Yawn* If you're gonna do vigilante do it right. What a pretentious piece of crap.
An American Tail 1986,  G)
An American Tail
Typical cheesy animated fare.
Shakespeare in Love 1998,  R)
Austin Powers in Goldmember 2002,  PG-13)
Cinderella 1950,  G)
It's not too bad, but I really can't get excited about anything Disney.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 1999,  PG)
James and the Giant Peach 1996,  PG)
James and the Giant Peach
Annoying and a bit warped.
Schindler's List 1993,  R)
Sid & Nancy 1986,  R)
Starship Troopers 1997,  R)
Starship Troopers
At first the cheese was manageable, but when they started fighting aliens it got just plain stupid. I assume the novel does a much more effective job of conveying the satirical message of militaristic propaganda than the film, where it is secondary to special effects-driven mass appeal and undoubtedly lost on the ignorant.
The Spiderwick Chronicles 2008,  PG)
The Black Cauldron 1985,  PG)
The Black Cauldron
I now present the grand opening of the Disney cheese factory.
Top Gun 1986,  PG)
Top Gun
My brother used to watch this so often he had the whole thing memorized so I've probably seen the whole thing piecemeal, but this is the first time I've seen it in it's entirety start-to-finish. Can't say I was impressed.
Inside Man 2006,  R)
Inside Man
Like many of Spike Lee's films, pretentious and overdramatic. Jodie Foster's character is probably in my top 5 most annoying characters ever.
Much Ado About Nothing 1993,  PG-13)
Much Ado About Nothing
What can I say, it's Shakespeare. Keanu Reeves and Denzel Washington were horribly miscast but, thankfully, Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh shine in their roles.
Superman 1978,  PG)
Runaway Bride 1999,  PG)
Runaway Bride
I suspected when the movie opened to U2 that I was in store for two hours of cheese. I was right. Full of cliches and more corny music, I couldn't wait for this movie to be over.
The Lion King 2011,  G)
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea 1954,  G)
Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)
Pan's Labyrinth
A major letdown. I really didn't find anything exceptionally good about this. Perhaps it was the crappy CGI, perhaps it was the puppet strings attached to Ofelia, or perhaps it was the lack of any real story. I actually developed more of an inclination toward the despicable Capitan than any of the protagonists. That's just not right. I was very disappointed.
A Fish Called Wanda 1988,  R)
A Fish Called Wanda
This was all right. At least it was scads better than Terry Gilliam.
Sorority Row 2009,  R)
Sorority Row
This movie is just plain baaad.
Thelma & Louise 1991,  R)
Thelma & Louise
Annoying characters, overrated actresses, lame directing, and an overuse of some horrid music. The only high point was Christopher McDonald - funny as ever.
Weekend at Bernie's 1989,  PG-13)
Weekend at Bernie's
A prime example of 80's silliness. No, that's not a compliment.
Saved! 2004,  PG-13)
Eh...not my type of movie.
Sherlock Holmes 2009,  PG-13)
Sherlock Holmes
Let's take a classic cerebral character and fashion an action movie around him - complete with, but thankfully not totally reliant on, crappy CGI. As much as I like each of them, Downey and Law are miscast. And Guy Ritchie has always been totally overrated. It was not a complete waste of time, but I will not be lining up to see any sequels.
Inglourious Basterds 2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
I spent the entire 2 1/2 hours having faith that Tarantino would end the movie in typical stylish fashion. When Shosanna shoots Frederick, only to be blown away during her moment of apparent epiphany, followed by the climactic theater scene, I thought - this is classic Tarantino. But I should've known, being that he hasn't made a good movie since Jackie Brown, that I would be let down. His turning of Hans into an American-worshipping, unsuspecting pansy at the end who is summarily dispatched by the dishonarable Aldo was just awful. Quentin, go back to selling videos instead of making them.
Kids 1995,  NC-17)
What I once thought was a disturbing reality check now is outdated and annoying. Still groundbreaking in it's discovery of some promising young actors.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off 1986,  PG-13)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
It was good when I was a kid - now it's just silly.
The Long Kiss Goodnight 1996,  R)
Beverly Hills Cop III 1994,  R)
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay 2008,  R)
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
Nowhere near as funny as the first one. The unrated version amplified the stupidity, just like The Sweetest Thing.
The New World 2005,  PG-13)
The New World
Though often beautiful cinematographically, the English Patient-like music and the Apocalypse Now-like narative made this movie just plain laughable in it's attempt at being artistic. And the extremely boring second half reminded me just how overrated Terrence Malik is.
Starman 1984,  PG-13)
Yet another overrated Jeff Bridges movie. His being nominated for a Best Actor Oscar is ridiculous. Some decent special effects however, even though they are almost 30 years old.
Rambo III 1988,  R)
Anastasia 1997,  G)
Perhaps if this had stuck to being a musical it could've been salvaged. As it was it was typical animated drivel. Bartok is certainly one of the most annoying supporting characters in film history. And I thought granny never saw Anastasia again?? Pfft.
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) 1954,  Unrated)
Mars Attacks! 1996,  PG-13)
Mars Attacks!
Perhaps the epitome of Tim Burton ridiculosity. Oh wait, there's Beetlejuice...and Batman Returns.
Jumanji 1995,  PG)
Bonnie Hunt and the CGI were annoying, and the editing was questionable, but the story was interesting and the movie was mildly entertaining. The allegory was appreciated also.
9 1/2 Weeks 1986,  R)
9 1/2 Weeks
The utter lack of substance outweighs any vestige of eroticism that might be present (of which there is very little). Filled with some of the worst 80's music and one of the worst montages in movie history.
Diary of the Dead 2007,  R)
Diary of the Dead
Bad. Like a Blair Witch for zombies.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers 1954,  G)
A Perfect Getaway 2009,  R)
A Perfect Getaway
This movie thought itself cute and clever when, in reality, it was just stupid and nonsensical. One review I read said they actually got angry at David Twohy for having wasted their time and that they would never watch one of his movies again. I completely echo that sentinment.
Resident Evil 2002,  R)
Resident Evil
The video game is a classic, the movie...not so much.
Gran Torino 2009,  R)
Gran Torino
I wanted a Taxi Driver ending - I didn't get it; disappointing.
The Mission 1986,  PG)
The Nightmare Before Christmas 1993,  PG)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
A couple of good songs by the minor characters and a moderately interesting plot, but it feels too much like a ripoff of The Grinch and is a bit too hokey at times to make this any more than mildly entertaining.
Birth 2004,  R)
This movie is just plain absurd, the music annoying, and the
"I-see-dead-people" redux kid overdramatic.
Tropic Thunder 2008,  R)
Tropic Thunder
There were some funny parts but overall this was a bit too silly for my tastes. Though Tom Cruise and Robert Downey were very good. I jokingly said Robert Downey should be nominated for best actor; apparently he was!
The Brothers Grimm 2005,  PG-13)
The Brothers Grimm
Starts out mildly interesting, but becomes just plain silly; typical Gilliam.
The Bourne Ultimatum 2007,  PG-13)
The Bourne Ultimatum
I rewatched all three Bourne movies in succession and, while the first two held up, this one fell flat. Partly this was due to inferior directing and scoring, partly due to annoying characters, and partly due to just feeling like they stretched the plot too thin.
Dodgeball - A True Underdog Story 2004,  PG-13)
Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981,  PG)
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Even as a kid I never really saw the fascination with the Indiana Jones movies. Upon reviewing my feelings are the same. The concept of a super archaeologist is cool, but the presentation is rather hokey. I imagine it has something to do with Steven Spielberg's unerring ability to take the good and make it lavishly overdone. The airplane fight scene is a classic though.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5 - The Dream Child 1989,  R)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5 - The Dream Child
After the first one these just aren't worth watching. There's really no plot, just segues from one ridiculous episode to the next.
Ben-Hur 1959,  G)
Decent epic saga, but I preferred The Ten Commandments. The last half hour or so was just too much.
Lara Croft - Tomb Raider 2001,  PG-13)
Lara Croft - Tomb Raider
This movie is much more ridiculous than I remembered. Even Daniel Craig is corny in it. Give me the vid game any day.
Kingpin 1996,  PG-13)
This was pretty dumb; there were very few funny moments. Chris Elliott was the best thing about it - and he was barely in it.
Serpico 1973,  R)
I remember this being a slightly boring cop movie. While this rare glimpse at a good cop is respectable, ultimately my initial recollection proved correct.
The Family Stone 2005,  PG-13)
The Family Stone
Pretentious and painful. It's really hard to like a movie with a dearth of likeable characters. I would say it's damn near impossible not to like anybody Luke Wilson plays; Rachel McAdams, however. is as annoying as ever. The ending is nice however.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 1966,  R)
Hollow Man 2000,  R)
Hollow Man
Cool concept. Unfortunately this movie is ruined by stupid characters, corny dialogue throughout (which becomes laughable at the end), and a just plain ludicrous sequence of events during one of the worst endings I have ever seen in a film.
Tomorrow Never Dies 1997,  PG-13)
Tomorrow Never Dies
Like it's predecessor, nothing good about it and plenty bad.
Toy Story 1995,  G)
Toy Story
I didn't like this as much as I remembered. I prefer the 2nd one.
Marie Antoinette 2006,  PG-13)
Marie Antoinette
An artsy-fartsy piece of garbage
The Tuxedo 2002,  PG-13)
The Tuxedo
This was painful to watch and done before much better as "The Mask."
Lost In Translation 2003,  R)
Lost In Translation
Watching two boring people be boring together...gripping. The fact that anyone was nominated for any award for this movie, let alone winning, is a crime.
Changeling 2008,  R)
An overrated drama; drawn-out when it could've ended numerous different times. The ending was just plain maudlin. Clint is becoming way too soft. John Malkovich, however, was brilliant as usual.
Lady in the Water 2006,  PG-13)
Passenger 57 1992,  R)
Passenger 57
Wesley Snipes in his first big-budget action film. Lucky for him his career took off better than this POS.
Batman: The Movie 1966,  PG)
Batman: The Movie
As much as I like the show, this is just a bit too cheesy for a full-length feature.
RV 2006,  PG)
If your sense of humor relies solely on slapstick you may find this enjoyable. Personally, I'll opt for the Three Stooges. This was basically a really bad version of Vacation.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe 1979,  Unrated)
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Not a very compelling version of this classic tale.
Bull Durham 1988,  R)
Rush Hour 1998,  PG-13)
Rush Hour
Just your typical stooge cop movie. The Lethal Weapon of the 90's.
The Dead Zone 1983,  R)
The Dead Zone
Nothing special here.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 - Dream Warriors 1987,  R)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 - Dream Warriors
Not a whole lot better than the crappy sequel.
Great Expectations 1998,  R)
Great Expectations
not a fan at all of the cheesy modernization of mixing old stories and new music
The Ten Commandments 1956,  G)
Stop-Loss 2008,  R)
This was pretentious garbage. The acting was terrible and the directing awful. Even Joseph-Gordon Levitt was bad (it felt like watching Pauly Shore).
Timecop 1994,  R)
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle 1992,  R)
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle
I remembered this being a somewhat sexy and interesting thriller. Now it just seems absurd and annoying.
Hollywood Homicide 2003,  PG-13)
Hollywood Homicide
Stupid. This movie is all across the board and ends up going nowhere.
The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear 1991,  PG-13)
Letters to Juliet 2010,  PG)
Letters to Juliet
What starts out painfully pretentious with annoying characters and lots of plot holes develops into something at least halfway decent.
Roxanne 1987,  PG)
Saving Silverman (Evil Woman) 2001,  PG-13)
Saving Silverman (Evil Woman)
It had some funny moments, but overall it was just too silly.
Good Morning, Vietnam 1987,  R)
To Die For 1995,  R)
To Die For
Wannabe cult film done documentary style.
The Game Plan 2007,  PG)
Raging Bull 1980,  R)
Serenity 2005,  PG-13)
Damien: Omen II 1978,  R)
Damien: Omen II
Nothing special here.
Brewster's Millions 1985,  PG)
Brewster's Millions
Had there been some more limiting stipulations to how the money could be spent this would be a good movie. As it is it simply is propped up by Pryor and Candy.
Far From Heaven 2003,  PG-13)
Far From Heaven
I found this to be pretty nondescript.
Night at the Museum 2006,  PG)
Night at the Museum
I actually saw the 2nd one before this one in its entirety, though it really doesn't matter as they are virtually indistuingishable in my mind. While a bit too silly for me, it does offer clean entertainment and hopefully inspires kids (and grown ups) to learn more about history.
Wild Things: Foursome 2009,  R)
Wild Things: Foursome
This was painfully bad, making about as much sense as a puzzle made of all edge pieces and containing as much drama as the tp running out.
28 Days Later 2003,  R)
28 Days Later
This was painful to watch. Perhaps because it was full of pretention; perhaps all the terrible music; perhaps because all of the actors were exceedingly annoying; or perhaps because there was absolutely nothing new here.
The Invisible 2007,  PG-13)
The Invisible
This was probably the most pretentious piece of garbage I've ever seen.
Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny 2006,  R)
Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny
Really no different than Bucky Larson.
Joe Dirt 2001,  PG-13)
Joe Dirt
This was quite dumb. Brittany Daniel was hotter than hell's fire though.
Fallen 1997,  R)
This wasn't that good to begin with, and then it degenerated into pure silliness. The lame ending was seen almost from the start.
Jacob's Ladder 1990,  R)
Jacob's Ladder
I found this a bit boring and silly, with no suspense whatsoever.
The Chronicles of Riddick 2004,  PG-13)
The Chronicles of Riddick
I had some high hopes for this movie that were utterly dashed. This was just plain painful to watch.
Extraordinary Measures 2010,  PG)
Extraordinary Measures
Annoying, except for the corporate bureaucracy insight. Lorenzo's Oil was much better.
Network 1976,  R)
Pathetically prescient about the state of sensationalist programming and the sheep that blindly follow it. Faye Dunaway stinks it up as usual. Warren Beatty's monologue is one of the best ever though.
Fantastic Mr. Fox 2009,  PG)
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Pluses for originality and minuses for annoyance equal a sum total of mediocrity.
Puss in Boots 2011,  PG)
Puss in Boots
As expected from DreamWorks, typically misplaced adult "humor" tastelessly packaged as kids' entertainment. This was extremely painful.
Baby Mama 2008,  PG-13)
Baby Mama
Two of my least favorite actresses and a bunch of ugly babies don't mix well with this cat.
Field of Dreams 1989,  PG)
Field of Dreams
Back to the Future Part III 1990,  PG)
Back to the Future Part III
Like Raiders of the Lost Ark, I seem to remember BttF being mildly entertaining, but overrated. This was just plain bad.
Kung Fu Panda 2 2011,  PG)
Kung Fu Panda 2
As expected, typical dreamworks crap.
Papillon 1973,  PG)
The second half is much better than the first, but still not much here.
Rear Window 1954,  PG)
Rear Window
I found this a tad boring. The ending grew a bit suspenseful...until I remembered I was watching a movie from the 50's.
1408 2007,  PG-13)
This started out highly suspenseful, and then degenerated to pure silliness.
The Jewel of the Nile 1985,  PG)
The Jewel of the Nile
City Lights 1931,  G)
City Lights
I like Charlie Chaplin. This is a sweet story with some genuine LOL moments. But it also was a bit boring.
Crash 2004,  R)
The pretention drips like a leaky faucet. SirPant hit the nail on the head.
Clash of the Titans 2010,  PG-13)
Clash of the Titans
garyX says all I really need to say about this epic CGI taint. Alexa Davalos and Sam Worthington leave an especially powerful stench.
Old Dogs 2009,  PG)
Old Dogs
Ridiculously bad.
Away We Go 2009,  R)
Away We Go
The official start of the Sam Mendes decline. Of course anyone screwing up a relationship with Kate Winslet must have had something loose in his brain. Filled with pretention and annoying characters/actors. I hated this movie.
Soylent Green 1973,  PG)
Soylent Green
Harry Harrison is cool, but this felt way too dated. The obvious Holocaust infusion into the plot was trite as well.
The 400 Blows (Les Quatre cents coups) 1959,  Unrated)
The 400 Blows (Les Quatre cents coups)
A boring bit of juvenile delinquency.
Independence Day 1996,  PG-13)
Independence Day
As cheesy as they come. Can anybody say Death Star rip-off??

for the most part i can agree with this list of over-rated, or just plain bad movies(is anyone giving "timecop" or "van helsing" props??)however i would urge you to give "the seven samurai", "the mission", and "raging bull" another viewing as these three movies all feature excellent direction, acting, and cinematography in my opinion. cheers!
