Beasts of the Southern Wild 2012,  PG-13)
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Beasts of the Southern Wild (and Moonrise Kingdom) is the best film of the first half of the year. Everything about it is jaw-dropping. The cinematography is original and gorgeous, the story is original, the score is moving, and the acting is by far the best I've seen in a 2012 film and the actors aren't professionals. This film packed such an emotional punch and delivered a great message. Do yourself a favor and see it when it is released.
Amour 2012,  PG-13)
Only director Michael Haneke (The White Ribbon, Funny Games, Cache) could have pulled off this challenging, provocative, and brilliant film about how an elderly man (Jean-Louis Trintignant) cares for his wife (Emmanuelle Riva) after she has a stroke. The acting, particularly by the 85-year old Riva is Oscar-worthy and the film takes some fascinating turns. This film is a sure-fire Oscar-nominee.
No 2013,  R)
A great film about a fascinating subject, No, Chile's submission to the Oscars, is inspirational without being sentimental. Gael GarcĂa Bernal gives an excellent performance, as always, and the cinematography (the film was shot with an '80s U-Matic camera) is fascinating due to the fact that the archival footage is woven seamlessly with the actual film. The script is really sharp and quite funny. When this releases on February 15, run to see it. The director and actress from the film were there for a Q&A as an added bonus.
Holy Motors 2012,  Unrated)
Looper 2012,  R)
The best film thus far this year, Looper works on all levels. It is moving, engrossing, thrilling, dazzling, well-acted, incredibly smart, and very violent. This is what Rian Johnson has been working towards and I am thrilled to see him doing a film on this scale with a larger-than-not budget after the huge promise he showed with the great Brick years ago. This is one of a select group of must-sees thus far in 2012.
Moonrise Kingdom 2012,  PG-13)
Moonrise Kingdom
Moonrise Kingdom is a beautiful film that meshes all of Wes Anderson's strengths together to make a wonderfully filmed, witty, and smart movie that is one of the best portrayals of preteens yet put on film. See the full review at
The Queen of Versailles 2012,  PG)
Chicken with Plums 2012,  PG-13)
Chicken with Plums
From the directors of Persepolis, Chicken with Plums is one of the year's funniest and most heartfelt, beautiful, sad, and touching films. It is also one of the best overall films that I have seen this year. The performances are excellent, the script is witty, and the cinematography is stunning. If this film is playing by you, you must go see it. It is something special.
