188	The Reader 2008, R) An impressive film in a number of ways, though all the better for my avoiding all the hype surrounding it's release in the cinema. I can't remember if Kate Winslet won an oscar for this or the Revolutionary Road film (the two of which are completely mixed up in my head - joining a category of confusion which includes No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood).

192	Marty 1955, Unrated) More of sociological interest than anything else and I don't see why it's in my "films to see before you die" but decent. Lead actor was knifed to death toward the end of the last film I saw - from here to eternity!
193	Rashômon (Rashomon) (In the Woods) 1951, Unrated)
194	Revolutionary Road 2008, R) This felt like a follow-up to American Beauty. Winslet?s performance as the trapped wife of a seedy Leo di Caprio was probably the most impressive thing in the film ? though how much of it was performance given recent news of her own marriage? Unfortunately the soundtrack made the whole thing feel like an interminably slow Moby video ? an insult if ever there was one. Highlight of the film was the arrival of a mentally disturbed relative of a neighbour ? who simply tells the truth to both leads (I rather pompously thought this was a Shakespearean nod ? the fool in Lear?). What I wouldn?t give to be able to insert that character into film and television dramas at the push of a button.
195	A Prophet (Un prophete) 2009, R) Truly exceptional film - can't imagine this won't be in my top ten by the end of the year.
196	The Men Who Stare at Goats 2009, R) Ignoring Ewan McGregor's diabolical attempt at an American accent proved very difficult and may have coloured my opinion of this film somewhat unfairly. There are certainly watchable and enjoyable passages but the overwhelming sense after watching the film is that the extras - interviews with the people whose story inspired the film - were the more enjoyable feature of the DVD. Still, even those were a little annoying thanks to Jon Ronson's grin reminding you how enjoyable it must have been to have been played by McGregor on screen (albeit in a reimagined barely connected to the real world way).
197	Zidane, un Portrait du 21e Siècle (Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait) 2006, Unrated) The emperor's new goals
198	Pan's Labyrinth 2006, R) An excellent experience watching this film - the setting in Franco's Spain upped the ante significantly, but even beyond that the story, the acting performances and the feel of the film (even when watched on a ropey TV) were top notch.
199	Entre les Murs (The Class) 2008, PG-13) A truly outstanding (if a little long) film about a year in the life of a secondary school teacher in urban France. So good, you keep thinking it must be a documentary - the lead actor wrote the (semi-autobiographical) novel on which the film is based.
200	Inception 2010, PG-13) Another winner from English director Christopher Nolan, very much related to his excellent films "Following" and "Memento". The only downside is the length - which is almost certainly so long because of the need to tick so many boxes to justify the budget and maximize the revenue. Films and dreaming - a match made in heaven,
201	Rapt 2011, Unrated) Impressive French film about a kidnapped CEO of a powerful French company whose lifestyle causes problems for everyone when the media get involved in the story. Clearly this film is commenting on modern France, the media, the world of business and various other aspects of modern life - as such it's a superior cinema experience, though I bet you won't find a sympathetic character in there!

203	The Ghost Writer 2010, PG-13) This was quite a good aeroplane film until the end approaches and not only does it collapse like a flan in a cupboard, you're reminded that it was directed by a child abusing escapee from justice.
204	Delicatessen 1991, R) Quite brilliant film with hugely impressive photography throughout and numerous odd moments balanced by some truly hilarious scenes - especially involving attempted suicide.
205	Capitalism: A Love Story 2009, R) Containing a couple of stunts worthy of his former work, this documentary falls short of the mark - the economic and financial analysis is not clever and is provided on multiple occassions by an actor friend of the director's which is just odd. Given the "business-as-usual" approach by most major corporations I'm afraid that this film achieved nothing.
206	Chungking Express 1994, PG-13) Delightful film - two stories which have the scantest connection presented beautifully on screen. Vastly superior to the director's later (and in my - minority - opinion, hugely over-rated) film "In the Mood for Love".
207	Stalker 1979, Unrated) An interesting, if overly long film (unnecessarily split into two parts on my version) which mixes science fiction with cod-philosophy, mostly to good effect but given the topic - a journey into a magical "zone" where your innermost greatest wish may be granted) the ending was unsurprisingly disappointing.
208	Black Swan 2010, R) An interesting new genre on display here - ballet horror. Watching a fragile young woman lose the plot doesn't exactly rank as entertainment, but this film succeeds best in those scenes where the lead is alone in New York - on the subway, leaving a night club, rehearsing in the theatre. Unfortunately the plot development didn't satisfy this viewer and the use of Vincent Cassell was just disappointing.
209	The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos) 2009, R) Quite superb story wonderfully represented on screen - throw in some fine performances and moments of true suspense and it makes for a very good film indeed. Let down only by the strain needed to suspend disbelief at times as well as the frustratingly slow love interest plotline.
210	Serpico 1973, R) We learned from George Elliot not to trust an Italian with white mice (at least, I did) - well Al Pacino's Italian American with white mice does seem a little too good to be true in this superior take on police corruption in 70's New York. Highly recommended not just for the acting, writing and photography but also the period scenes around New York which seem to hit the mark.
211	Pickpocket 1959, Unrated) Surprisingly dull. Having heard that the film was something of a masterpiece I avoided reading about it in any detail, having watched it I read a few bits and pieces and I see that the director is acclaimed for not using trained actors - even though the acting performances were poor to my eyes; and for keeping things simple (read dull). The pick-pocketing scenes themselves are impressive but not enough to sustain the film in my eyes.
212	Notorious 1946, Unrated) Hitch can be relied on and doesn't let us down with this - the suspense was present throughout and the ending didn't disappoint.
213	Plein soleil (Purple Noon) (Blazing Sun) (Full Sun) (Lust for Evil) 1960, PG-13) Superior to the Hollywood remake - a fine film.
214	The Player 1992, R) Nice to see this again - all seems so long ago now. Too many cameos really but I guess they add to the uneasiness and unreal feel to the whole thing. Malcolm McDowell's cameo is particularly enjoyable.
215	Up in the Air 2009, R) Just what I needed - a film about someone who makes people redundant for a living. Started off dull, got more interesting but Clooney's sidekicks failed to convinve whilst he's blotted his copybook by appearing in those bloody coffee machine ads.
216	Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans 2009, R) Exceptional performance from Cage in this and featuring New Orleans looking amazing in the background. It's an odd film in many ways but very pleased to have seen it.
217	Beverly Hills Cop 1984, R) Entertaining nonsense, notable for the shock with which my parents viewed the swearing in the opening scene when watching it in the 80s on video compared with reaction now.
218	Beverly Hills Cop II 1987, R) Less entertaining, still nonsense, still enjoyable.
219	Beverly Hills Cop III 1994, R) The worst film I have seen all the way through.
220	L'Argent 1983, Unrated) Unwatchable. Pretentious. Using non-actors is generally praised in reviews, almost unthinkingly it seems. Couldn't recommend this less.
221	Loulou 1980, R) An interesting and clearly notable film that obviously means more to the academy for its importance that it does watching it now.
222	X-Men: First Class 2011, PG-13) Enjoyable nonsense. Interesting to be watching this is a large Odeon in London on a Saturday night along with maybe 50 other people tops. Is this because the film has bombed or because mainstream cinema is dying? Also interesting to note that the story came from Bryan Singer (he of "Usual Suspects fame) and then to spot the similarities - the usual suspects themselves being quite close to a stellar line up of (anti-)heroic characters, the evil Keyzer Soze style villain and the denouement involving destroying a vessel. There's even the "I can't feel my legs" shared line (Gabriel Byrne / James McAvoy).
223	Say Anything... 1989, PG-13) Really quite enjoyable romantic comedy featuring a decent number of cliches of the genre but just enough originality to perform better than expected. Also interesting to note that Cusack does not appear to have aged since then.
224	Alice (Neco z Alenky) 1988, Unrated) Enjoyably odd, with superb animation - the director transforms everyday objects into the recognizable world through the looking glass.
225	Kind Hearts and Coronets 1949, Unrated) Thoroughly enjoyable addition to the Ealing comedy series - Alec Guinness on fine form in various roles, other actors phone in performances but held together by a lovely plot. Undemanding stuff.
226	Crazy Heart 2009, R) Caught this on a plane and it was certainly a more enjoyable way to pass a couple of hours than playing angry birds or whatever it was that an irritating neighbour was doing. Some delightful scenes, decent music, Jeff Bridges in a believable performance but why does the love interest have to be so staggeringly out of his league? I guess the character had some star power but still - it did seem somewhat ludicrous to my eyes. Still, that's Hollywood.
227	Deliverance 1972, R) Obviously superb film - can't believe it took me so long to get around to watching this all the way through after many attempts in my teenage years ended in sleep.
