The Dark Knight 2008, PG-13)
One of the most anticipated movies in a long time, and I really can't say that it didn't live up to expectations. Fantastic addition to the new batman series, with an incredible performance by Heath Ledger. I kept hearing people say that his performance could be oscar-worthy, and at first I thought it was just because he died, and people felt bad, so what better way to pay tribute...but I think he might legitimately deserve it...even though we haven't had an action movie/blockbuster nominated for an acting award in a long time...Great performances all around (even though Bale's "Batman voice" kinda still annoys me), and I love the fact that this new series of Batman movies goes a little deeper than the original ones. Really makes the 2 1/2 hours fly by. And how great is Christopher Nolan, eh? |

X-Men: First Class 2011, PG-13)
After what I thought was a disastrous 3rd installment of the very good X-Men series, they decided to go back to the beginning, and it was a tremendous idea. I thought this was a great prequel and luckily for me, I am just a casual fan so I won't bother nit-picking the details, I was just able to sit back and enjoy this. I thought the casting was great and aside from some occasional cornyness ("Mutant and proud!") it was a great way for the series to bounce back. |

Hellboy 2004, PG-13)
I can't tell you how surprised I was by this. First of all, I'm fairly comic book savvy...but I had never heard of "Hellboy"...so I went into this movie with a clean slate. No ideas of how the movie SHOULD BE (based on the comic book)...I just sat back and enjoyed it. It did a nice job of explaining the characters (a must for comic book movies...not everyone in the audience is a comic book nerd)...and the action/story was interesting. I had fairly low expectations going in, but I left pretty impressed. |

Iron Man 2008, PG-13)
As far as a comic book movie goes, it was a pretty solid effort. It only has a few "oh, come ON" moments (and comic books movies are allowed quite a few of those), but overall, good special effects, some decent action. Pretty darn predictable, but that's not the biggest deal in the world. Downey Jr. makes a pretty good Tony Stark. |

The Crow 1994, R) |

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) 2008, PG-13)
The first one was SO much better than I thought it would be, and with that, it earned my interest in the sequel...even though my expectations were relatively low...rarely are sequels as good as the original...and I didn't think the first one was THAT great...just surprisingly good. This one was pretty decent..the special effects are really outstanding and Guillermo del Toro's vision is incredible. It's a tad predictable and has a couple chuckles in it, but overall, as far as comic book movies go (because you have to take movies like this at face value), it's a pretty decent movie. |

Batman Returns 1992, PG-13)
Ok, here's the thing with this movie. We all know that the Batman movies do a nose dive after the first one...BUT, this one COULD HAVE been a fantastic follow up (for me anyway) had they not screwed up one vital part of the movie: The Penguin. Making him a mutant weirdo with parental issues RUINED this for me. The rest of the movie is fine... |

Punisher: War Zone 2008, R) |

| 19 |
Superman Returns 2006, PG-13)
First of all, they really couldn't have picked a better Superman than Brandon Routh. I thought he fit the role really well. I thought Spacey was pretty great as Lex, but the rest was pretty decent. I never thought the original Superman movies were all that great to begin with, so it's not like there's much to live up to (in my book), but overall, it was probably better than any of the original 4 movies (not saying much). |

The Incredible Hulk 2008, PG-13)
Not that this says much, but it's an upgrade on the one they made 5 years ago. A major upgrade. However, that doesn't make it a great movie. Maybe I'm just not that into Hulk as a comic book character ... but I just didn't think much of this. And who knew Edward Norton was hard up for cash? No clue how they wrangled him into this. They did some nice things special effects-wise, but there's just nothing new being brought to the table in this. It's just the same old comic book character story with those same cliches. |

Thor 2011, PG-13)
I have to say I had very low expectations for this. Mostly because I'm not a huge Thor fan to begin with. Having said that, I thought the movie was pretty entertaining, as long as it didn't take place on Earth. I thought the battle scenes were impressive, and I enjoyed the story that was going on, but as soon as Thor was banished to Earth, it gets corny and rather painful. But overall, as far as comic book movies go, this one was pretty decent. |

X-Men: The Last Stand 2006, PG-13) |

Green Lantern 2011, PG-13)
Disclaimer: I was never a big Green Lantern fan. In fact, not really a DC Comics kid, so I really knew nothing about him going into this, so I have zero frame of reference -- which is probably a good thing. I really had pretty low expectations for this, and that probably help me enjoy it a little bit. It had it's expected corny moments, but it wasn't too painful. |

Spider-Man 3 2007, PG-13)
What is it with the third movie? Why do most third movies disappoint? (Matrix, Godfather, X-Men, etc.) This had all the ingredients to be a fantastic movie, but it really wasn't that great. I had been waiting since the first movie for Venom, and when he finally arrived he got a fairly minor role in the film and I didn't like the way his character played out. The ode to Saturday Night Fever thing was about as painful to watch as I've seen in a while. Sandman was a horrible choice for a villian. And speaking of villians...why aren't we allowed to just hate them? Why do we end up feeling bad for all of them? For all the hype..and my own personal expectations, this movie failed...big time. |

Hulk 2003, PG-13)
All I've ever heard about this movie is that it's completely unwatchable...with that in mind, I finally got around to watching it and it's not THAT bad. I mean, in terms of comic book movies, it's certainly not the worst, but it's not all that great either. Granted, I was never a big fan of the Hulk to begin with, so I don't have the whole "it wasn't accurate" thing going against it. The "dog scene" was kinda stupid...and the finale was kinda silly as well. Not unwatchable, but it could be a lot better. Was it bad enough that they needed to re-do it FIVE YEARS LATER? Not really. Maybe the new one will be an improvement. |

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer 2007, PG)
Just as disappointing as the first one, but at least I was ready for it this time. Same corny-ness, same disappointing Doctor Doom. The Silver Surfer storyline was semi-interesting, but then we dive into another pet peeve of mine, battling against cosmic beings. The FF are corny in the comic books, so I was prepared for it, but it still just annoys me and I wish they would just stop -- but as usual, they're going to make another one. blah. |

Fantastic Four 2005, PG-13) |

The Punisher 2004, R)
Well, it's head and shoulders better than the original....but that's not really saying much. Thomas Jane makes a GREAT Punisher, but the movie itself is pretty typical. Right down to the cheesy comic relief goofy sidekicks....ugh. I will say in this day and age of making a movie out of any character that graced the pages of a comic book, The Punisher is one of the few that seems to translate into a decent movie -- but the people who made the movie couldn't escape the typical action movie retreads and make an interesting movie. Oh well... |

Spawn 1997, PG-13)
I was a fan of the comic book, and I thought this was a pretty lame adaptation. John Leguizamo plays his role as annoyingly as it was in the comic book (which works, I guess), but overall the movie is really cheesy. Dialog is just as bad. On top of that, it includes one of my biggest movie pet peeves: The Devil fighting people, even superheroes, is just annoying to me. But the worst part was the awful special effects they used for The Devil. It was embarrassing. |

Daredevil 2003, PG-13)
As much as this movie sucked...what earns it one star is the GREAT casting of Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin...BRILLIANT. Couldn't have picked a better actor for the job. Colin Farrell is pretty decent for Bullseye...if only they didn't give him so many stupid lines. The fighting scene between Daredevil and Elektra has to be one of the corniest scenes ever |

Elektra 2005, PG-13)
Not really sure why they felt the need to make a movie out of this particular comic book character...probably cause they needed an excuse to strut Jennifer Garner out one more time in her little red outfit. It's pretty corny, just like Daredevil...and the character itself isn't all that interesting -- and neither is the story. Blah...I didn't think we were getting THIS desperate for comic book movies. |

Ghost Rider 2007, PG-13)
I have no idea why they made this. Ghost Rider is far from a "popular" comic book character, and his story doesn't exactly SCREAM to be made into a movie...he doesn't really have any big time villians to match him up with. This can't be good. -- that's what I wrote when the movie came out, and for some reason I watched it and it was everything I thought it would be. The one-liners in this movie were SO terrible, and overall it was just super corny. The special effects were ok, but aside from that, there wasn't much to it. On top of that, it includes one of my pet peeves about movies. Fighting the devil...I mean, seriously. The devil doesn't need to fight anyone...he's the devil, can't he just snap his fingers and kill people? I don't get why they wanted to make this movie, what a mess. |

Batman & Robin 1997, PG-13) |

| 36 |
Catwoman 2004, PG-13)
What an unbelievably horrible movie. All the comic book crap aside...it's just awful. The special effects are pretty lame (she turns into a cartoon during certain action sequences...while I know that's necessary, it's not supposed to be that obvious!) So many complaints I could make...Halle's outfit didn't even do that much for me. |
