Kingsley's excellent as usual, and many of the gear mechanisms are a joy to watch, as are the Parisian flybys. But somehow, despite dreamy effects and good child acting (esp Chloe Moretz's), this movie ultimately lacks something that Tornatore conjured so well in Cinema Paradiso: heart; without which this production chugs along beautifully intricate but lifeless, like its intriguing automaton.
