Brief Encounter
Breif Encounter is a beautiful film. One of the great love stories of the everyday which as the title suggest can happen in a brief moment and last a lifetime. This film involves one of the most heart-brakingly sad and yet stringly up-lifting endings ever. A classic in every sense.

The Third Man
Rated as the greatest British film by the BFI, I would have to agree. One of the greatest villians ever to grace the screen Harry Lime (Welles) is the center of this twisty-turny mystery notable for its Academy Award-winning cinematography and distinctive, recurring strange music. A giant ferris wheel and a spectacular last chase scene in the sewers highlight this tale of intrigue. Set in a really tragic post-World War II Vienna. Winner of my Top Film Noir Films.

Antonioni's greatest work. His amazing visual and verbal emphasis on the environment surrounding Thomas, Without a great deal of action, mystery, or explosive dialogue, this film is riveting and fascinating. A must see.

Apocalypse Now
Oh the Horror! Dark, creepy and tragic representation of Vietnam War. From Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness. Coppola's best war film, his Vietnam epic. Brando as Kurtz was incredible, all the performances were sensational. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."

63
Pulp Fiction 1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
A teenagers dream movie. Tarantino masterly weaves together multiple stories that juggle different plot lines, but at the same time has room enough for the characters to just talk about whatever. Jackson is the best as a hit-man with strong moral codes. The Travolta-Thurman dance scene and metaphysical discussions between Travolta and Jackson are the most memorable. It has to be seen to be believed! Winner of my Top Cult Films. Winner of my Top Neo Noir Films.

The Pianist 2002,  R)
The Pianist
Schindler's List, the ultimate holocast drama, was told from the viewpoint of Oscar Schindler the anti-hero no-jew who becomes their saviour, whereas The Pianist is told solely and intimately from the viewpoint of a Jewish pianist in the Warsaw ghetto. Adrien Brody is shateringly powerful in his meek silence, deserving of his Oscar. The Pianist is haunting, the scene in which the SS officer has him play the piano is one of the most powerful scenes I have ever seen. An essential film.
73
Elephant 2003,  R)
Elephant
Unforgettable. Dealing with a high school shoot out, the film has uncommon insight in the lives and minds of the teenage killers. Brilliant. Winner of the Cannes Film Festival. The second installment in Gus Van Saint's Death series.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley 2006,  PG-13)
The Wind That Shakes the Barley
The winner of the the Palme d'Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, this film had a lot to live up to. By that it mean the Cannes winner is almost always an independent slightly controversial 'out there', 'cutting edge' film, films like Elephant with it's unique camera shots and Pulp Fiction with it's fragmented story line. By these standards this film was not what one would expect from a Cannes winner. Yes it could be seen as controversial for it's strongly anti-British mentality and for dealing with the politically charged subject of Irish Independence, but it is by no means 'cutting edge' or 'out there'. The film's narrative and film style is traditional, even the title comes from a 19th-century Irish song. More than anything the film is an emotional gripping drama at has strong relevance for out troubled world today. Personally, from my Irish English heritage, the film resonated with me reminding me of the stories my grandfather would tell me but nowhere near as moving. The subject is still a 'touchy one' in my household today. In the end the film fell short of greatness. The message of brother vs brother drowning the more important over arching message of national independence. Film's that come to mind Ghandi and Bravehaert dealt with similar subjects and yet were far more powerful.
