Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
An awesome movie with one of the greatest punch-lines ever in the history of cinema. Brad Pitt proves that he is really a brilliant actor and sexy too. Edward Norton was great too. The movie may not have impressed critics so much, but the movie really has it's moments... I can't say much right now, just watch it! Totally powerful!

Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime) 1999,  PG-13)
Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime)
16 years in the making, Princess Mononoke is a landmark in the world of animation. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, one the creators of Studio Ghibli, Mononoke Hime is the story of a brave warrior, Ashitaka. He is attacked by a demon one day and unfortunately gets infected by a curse from the demon. Ashitaka is destined to die. But before that, he must find the truth behind the demon's attack. This leads him straight to an ancient forest where Gods rule the Earth, Beasts are large in size. Here Ashitaka witnesses the battle between nature and humans. While this happens, we watch spellbound!
The most interesting thing is that this movie has extensive character development. The details are very rich, the visuals stunning and the live-action scenes more than satisfying. That's not all. Joe Hisaishi's world famous score makes this movie more elegant. Watch Princess Mononoke and have a wonderful 2 hours of your life.. My all time favorite anime!

Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai)
Rarely does any cinema comes so close that it touches us so deeply....
The Seven Samurai may be Japanese, it may be long and B & W movie. But the universal theme of brotherhood could be felt even without subtitles...

This movie is rich in character study and even today it astonishes film critics and audiences throughout the world. Watch the Japanese movie that brought the country to an international level in world cinema. Enjoy the impressive use of narration, story-telling, camera angles...

All About Eve
This is the reason why we watch Hollywood. With an impressive story and witty lines, this movie stole my heart. Undoubtedly one of the best movies I have ever seen. A movie that regenerated my interest in old classics...
A must watch!

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
A fresh and new approach towards movie-making that will remain fresh even after many years. This film is quite different in aspects of it's story, direction, character study, editing, visual effects, even cinematography...
The poster itself is self explanatory for the uniqueness this film offers...
A perfect romantic-scifi movie...
13
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
14
The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
A movie that explores a dark mind or minds very deeply. And in the end, it's quite difficult to come out. This movie requires multiple viewing, not one. This is a creepy thriller that has become the most perfect horror movie that too without any ghosts, ghouls or monsters (vampire maybe...yes).
A movie that always gets me. And if it doesn't get you, then watch it again as you are missing something!
15
The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
Just one simple question:
Is there anyone out there who dislikes this movie?

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo.)
The coolest movie ever made...
Easily because...

Well just give it a try, Willya?

Toy Story 3 2010,  G)

The Wages of Fear 1953,  Unrated)
The Wages of Fear
How would you act when a even the smallest stones can kill you? The Wages of Fear gives the answer. The story is unique and after a great thriller, it's also a great psychological study of different characters including the supporting actors. A must-see french movie that still astounds movie-makers and critics worldwide...
19
A Separation 2011,  PG-13)
A Separation
The movie begins with a couple fighting over the divorce issue in a courtroom and we see this from the point of view of a judge. I was amazed when I observed that this entire starting sequence was shot without any cut for about 4-5 mins. This is the point where the film has completely gripped you with it's stylish direction and Oscar-worthy performances. Farhadi has totally gripped you to the movie by the time they are leaving the courtroom. Generally a movie gets interesting as it advances. But this movie gets you from the start itself! Now that is unique film-making!
Now you can use your imagination and understand how "A Separation" is different form Hollywood movies.

Being John Malkovich 1999,  R)
Being John Malkovich
The story gives us the idea of being in someone else's skin, in this case John Malkovich, and shows us a different style of film-making. The movie is great and has many outstanding moments. Kaufman's best after "Eternal Sunshine...". A Must See...

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope 1977,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
A film that taught film-makers worldwide how to make a perfect epic-movie. This is one of the most commonly watched movie in the world and there is no need for me to add another review in the thousands of reviews already available here to tell you how wonderful this movie is. 4.5/5.
23
Paths of Glory 1957,  Unrated)
Paths of Glory
I thought that I wouldn't be surprised before watching this movie because I knew Stanley Kubrick's style of movie making and loved most of them. But I was wrong. Kubrick's Paths of Glory was completely different and had a odd but wonderful feeling about it. Kubrick's movies have always been too complex for the Oscars to consider. That's because he is a true visionary director and knew so much about the world that he even went in outer space! Don't miss this classic war movie. Ingenious.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 1989,  PG-13)

Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) 1981,  PG)

Mary and Max 2009,  Unrated)

28 Days Later 2002,  R)
28 Days Later
The scariest part of this movie is that the zombies were less scarier when compared to another specie that has always scared me: Humans. This is what Danny Boyle is trying to indicate. The Rage virus has already invaded our minds in the form of domestic violence, terrorism... you name it. What I believe is that this movie is more of an eye-opener than a horror story and gives the movie a Stanley-Kubrick feeling... This movie truly is smart and teaches us through graphic visuals what will happen when humans resort to destroy each other. Enjoy this fresh approach towards a new kind of genre... Danny Boyle's a genius... But this doesn't mean the movie's not entertaining!
28
Akira 1988,  R)
Akira
A fantastic and bold move from the creators. Akira certainly had all the elements at the right place. The ending makes you think a lot and forces you to watch the movie multiple times. Yes it was quite gory and violent but the story made the movie extremely energetic. Even during the disgusting mutation scene, we feel like we are actually there... I just hope the Hollywood don't re-create this masterpiece. I ranked the movie 90% because I feel that it's completely different kind of movie, the one many have not got used; a totally different kind of genre. The music too was electric but magnificent. It truly gave the "Neo-Tokyo" feeling. In the end I was left asking my self:"What? This is anime!?"
29
Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road) 1955,  Unrated)
Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road)
A great beginning to a wonderful trilogy... A movie so simple yet so complex in emotions and it's characters. If you thought this was an OKAY movie, think again... I truly believe that Ray was born to make movies because you just can't make a perfect movie at your first attempt!

The Lady Vanishes 1938,  PG)
The Lady Vanishes
This was one of my first black and white movies I saw and Hitchcock's first ever. I have to say one thing: Astounding. The plot is quite unpredictable and the characters are all beautifully played by their respective actors. The plot does get complex over time but that doesn't make the movie less fun. Being one of the greatest Comedy Thrillers of all time, I highly recommend you this movie... Watch the magic of Hitchcock, The Birth of a Genius!

Braveheart 1995,  R)

My Neighbor Totoro 1988,  G)
My Neighbor Totoro
If it wasn't for John Lasseter's (creator of Toy Story) love for Japanese anime, we would probably be in the dark still without the knowledge of the existence of Studio Ghibli, the next best animation studio after Disney Pixar. He helped in introducing to the world Ghibli's fantastic films. Hayao Miyazaki, Director and Screenwriter, contributed more handsomely to the studio's achievement and success. And My Neighbor Totoro is one of his greatest achievements, probably in the entire cinematic world. This was the first time I saw what they call "True Art" in any animated movie. The story is of two sisters, Mei and Satsuki, who with their father move to a new home. The two of them then happen to meet Totoro, a forest spirit who helps grow plants in the nearby forest.

What unfolds next is a gentle heartwarming film experience that surprising leaves us nostalgic. Although the film seems to concentrate on a very young audience, it was an experience like Toy Story. What I love about this film is the way it takes time and allows to get lost in Totoro's world. One scene I recall the most is the scene when the two girls and Totoro are waiting, just waiting, at a bus stop taking shelter in umbrellas from the rain. Miyazaki captured the calmness so perfectly that it made me think,"You don't get to see this even on Winnie the Pooh". That scene truly is one the greatest moments in all of cinema and is one of the reasons why I love his films so much. In this way, Miyazaki is extremely skilled at creating a lovely environment in his films, in this case the environment is more nature oriented. Joe Hisaishi's score too is great as always, he has scored almost all Miyazaki films.

Miyazaki is well-known for his signature style of feminism, environmentalism and aviation. He uses all of these in Totoro. After Mickey Mouse, Teddy Bear and Winnie the Pooh, you will always find Totoro as the most favorite children's character. The innocence of Totoro is delightful for kids but more surprising thing is that the adults found it more moving and more meaningful and as I said earlier, Nostalgic...

Totoro, when released in 1988, created a sensation in the animation world and Studio Ghibli gained recognition. It was only after Totoro that Miyazaki was going to receive the title of one of the greatest film-makers of our time that to this date has remained consistent.

Kiki's Delivery Service 1989,  G)
Kiki's Delivery Service
Miyazaki continues to surprise with this coming-of-age tale of a young witch who leaves her home for her training according to the tradition and after taking refuge in a beautiful city she starts her own delivery service. As is with other Miyazaki films, this anime too isn't artificial in its emotions even when Kiki is equipped with the same old movie clichà (C)s. Kiki is an interesting character: she is optimistic, energetic and smart but at the same time she covets, she is proud making her sound a little foolish at times. Miyazaki's portrayal of young girls has always been perfect in every sense (e.g. his other films like Totoro, Spirited Away). Thus our Kiki is the hero and the villain both at the same time. She is that kind of person whose true goal is not to face life but is to face herself and her pride. Honestly, we all have gone through this phase, haven't we? Thus the portrayal of the lead character itself is so strong the film engages the audience like a thriller film does. Secondly, the people around Kiki were captured equally powerfully. She befriends a boy of her age, Tombo (he kind of looks like Waldo from Where's Waldo), then a pregnant woman and her husband who runs a bakery.

If you watch Kiki then one will realize that Miyazaki has used a variety of characters in Kiki who actually are the real juice of the movie. The early 20th century city itself has a character of its own and adds to the sweetness of the film without making it âtooâ? sweet. The animation itself is another surprising element. Miyazaki has taken care of all the intricate details so powerfully that itâ(TM)s impossible for us not to notice them and the hidden meaning behind it. Over the years critics and fans have debated the age in which the story actually takes place. Miyazaki deduced later in an interview that the story takes place in a different universe where both the World Wars never took place!

Another surprising masterpiece from Miyazaki with lovely imagery, interesting characters, an engaging story and most important of all: a thought-provoking conclusion that we never probably get to see in any other animated films. Highly recommended for animation fans and non-fans alike.
