My favourite movies from the 1970s. A lot of movies made before I was born are hard for me to enjoy because they feel so dated and 'of their time', but not these. To me, they're all timeless classics. The list is in order according to which I find most consistently absorbing from start to finish.

Halloween
My favourite horror movie, but not just a horror movie - an astute portrait of suburban life as well. Before the violence and menace even starts, it's already a pleasure to watch, as lively, yet organic conversations make the people feel far more real than most movie characters.

Jamie Lee Curtis is immediately appealing as a lonely, romantic bookworm who is far more responsible and mature than her friends, but likes them anyway. With fierce intensity and dread in his voice, Donald Pleasence makes every word of his character's dialog hit hard.

John Carpenter's direction of the movie is mesmerizing with impeccable use of foreground in shot compositions for maximum creepiness and suspense. His assured visual strategy makes the movie gripping from the first minute to the last, no matter how many times I watch it.
