My Favourite Action Movies

I'm a firm believer in this philosophy of a pure action film.

"Throughout cinematic history I believe the goal of well made action films was to illicit an emotional response, a visceral tightening of the stomach, not an intellectual response simply because the momentum of a film of this nature is to build to a crescendo rather than a point of intellectual debate while the film is going on."

Lat sau san taam (Hard-Boiled)
No John Woo, Chow Yun Fat & Hardboiled = No Matrix!!

Pure action!!

Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991,  R)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Everyone has an action film that blew their minds when they were a kid and consequently became an action movie junkie he/she is today. T2 is that movie for me. Saw it for the first time when I was 4. Let's just say that at that time, a movie about two indestructible robots figthing for the future was considered the greatest movie of all time lol.

I saw the movie again recently on TV and it is still a great action movie. It may not be as technologically advanced as recent movies but I guess the lack of highly excessive CGI is a good thing. Let's take the helicopter highway chase scene in the movie as an example. I bet if it was done today, the helicopter would be CGI.

Die Hard 1988,  R)
Die Hard
The action movie that defined the genre in the 90s (it was released in 1988 but the Die Hard rip offs came during the 90s). You have the flawed hero, the evil genius bad guy, the incompetent cops/FBIs, one liners and a single setting.
4
The Matrix 1999,  R)

Rambo: First Blood Part II 1985,  R)
Rambo: First Blood Part II
When you ask ordinary people about Rambo, they will create a mental picture of a shirtless man with a bandanna shooting down bad guys in the jungle instead of a troubled vietnam vet fighting cops.

This is the movie (not the first one) that cemented Rambo into pop culture status. It's also the first movie that introduced me to Rambo thus despite being the worse movie of 1985 or being labelled as a Reagan movie, this movie has a special place in my heart. The sight of a man who can do almost anything, from piloting a heli to blowing up people with arrows, blew me away when I was a kid. The way he selflessly refuse to take the medal of honor at the end made me proud of Rambo.

The Rock 1996,  R)
The Rock
One of the best action movie ever. Seen it dozen of times and never get bored of it. NEVER....well so far.

- Good cast: Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery having a good chemistry, Ed Harris brings some depth as a villain and even Michael Biehn was cool for a short while.

- Exciting action scenes: the hummer vs Ferrari chase, mine cart gun fight, shootout at the end.

- Heart pumping soundtrack: Easily THE acton movie theme for me. Dundun Dundun Dun DUN! Dundun Dundun dun DUN!!

The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)

The Bourne Ultimatum 2007,  PG-13)
The Bourne Ultimatum
***After watching all three Bourne movies for the very first time in one go***

What a finale!!! Good plot (answers alot of questions and a cool ending) with amazing action. The action sequence in Tangier is one of the best action sequence in recent years. Then there's the car chase scene in New York with a spectacular car crash which I can't believe Jason Bourne survived. Now I know what's with all the hype about the action in this movie and how Jason Bourne is up there with other beloved badass action heroes like James Bond, Rambo, McClane, etc.

The Rundown (Welcome to the Jungle) 2003,  PG-13)
The Rundown (Welcome to the Jungle)
One of the best buddy-action-comedy movie in recent years. Great action, great villain and great chemistry between the two lead. Watching this movie again recently makes me want to wish that the Rock (or should we call him Dwayne Johnson now) would go back to making action movies again.
13
Commando 1985,  R)
Commando
A friend of mine has never seen any Arnold Scwarzenegger movie. I recommended her this movie as the best introduction to Arnold's larger than life on-screen persona (you see a a part of John Matrix in Predator, True Lies, Last Action Hero and Terminator)

"You're a funny guy Sully. I like you that's why I'm gonna kill you last"

Rambo III 1988,  R)
Rambo III
When Bush was about to attack Afghanistan back in 2001, I remember telling my friend that they would lose because the Afghans defeated Alexander, The British and the Russians so they would surely beat the Americans. ROFL!! One of the few lessons I learned from this Rambo movie. Good times hehe

People shit on this movie because Rambo helps the mujahideen and all that. I mean so what, who could've known in those days that Americans will wage war with Afghanistan.

This is a good action movie.

**This review is dedicated to Hamid Karzai**

Predator 1987,  R)
Predator
This is the second most macho movie I've ever seen (the 1st place goes to Commando). You have Arnold Schwarzenegger, Apollo Creed, Jesse 'The body' Ventura and that "green beret gonna kick your ass" black guy from Commando VS an Alien who rips people's spine. nuff said.
