Sabotage 1936,  R)
Sabotage
Classic Hitchcock of the British period, equals the Lang and Hawks perfectionism in dark overtones and humidity crawling from beneath every corner.Homolka and Sidney are a supreme duet and although the film thrives with distracting propaganda during the pre-war period, this small diamond weaves Hitchcock's suspense with philosophy yet with the sly instinct of a jaguar.

The Song of Bernadette 1943,  Unrated)
The Song of Bernadette
Fictionalized lives of well-respected names (usually) start off promising and by the end,a feeling of unaccomplished desire destroys the viewing pleasure.
Bernadette Soubirous must have been a diligently eloquent woman whose firm beliefs of her visions were part of her level-headed character.King's adaptation from Werfel's historical novel of the eponymous saint possesses the romanticized elements of a Hollywood film with a small dose of maleficent antagonists / unrequited love but that doesn't remove the strong components of Jones' acting and the wonderful production design and supporting cast.
23
Arsenic and Old Lace 1944,  Unrated)

Henry V (The Chronicle History of King Henry the Fift with His Battell Fought at Agincourt in France 1944,  Unrated)
Henry V (The Chronicle History of King Henry the Fift with His Battell Fought at Agincourt in France
Olivier, the brave little toaster.Megalomaniac beyond good and evil,a person who pushed Shakespeare to the limits, and in his personal Henry V vision tarnishes the philosophy of the play.He probably knows we're in the movies so in spite of the rejuvenating colors and the chirping atmosphere,we are aware of the Shakespearean pathos somewhere in that clamor of fight.
25
The Three Caballeros 1944,  G)
26
The Lost Weekend 1945,  Unrated)
27
A Walk in the Sun 1945,  Unrated)
A Walk in the Sun
Respected director Lewis Milestone struggles to achieve the sound of fury as in Western Front.Well, there's exclamation alright and noisy distraction but where has all this aesthetic poetry gone?A minor triumph in spite of the many introverted sequences and non-linear battles.
28
The Best Years of Our Lives 1946,  Unrated)
29
Gilda 1946,  PG)
Gilda
Although I hate Rita Hayworth, that wasn't the big reason i chopped half a star.'46 had a couple of groundbreaking films like Great Expectations.Gilda is a passionately spirited film noir, dynamic and alluring.Of course it's a masterpiece but tiny tricks by a virtually talentless director don't help. The precise innovation instead for Gilda's extra points lies on Vidor's early experiments with shadows and different approaches of the actors.Something quite effective since he had a well-made story to deal with.
30
Notorious 1946,  Unrated)
31
Gentleman's Agreement 1947,  PG)
Gentleman's Agreement
Anti-racist film evolving a perpetual egoism from Kazan's side, continuing relentlessly till we reach the culminating step with America,America.Whimsical and tragic in many circumstances,a picture where the major flaw stands on Dorothy McGuire's extravaganza.Holm is exceptional in a roller coaster part,Kazan's direction of his actors is always top-class.
32
Monsieur Verdoux 1947,  Unrated)
Monsieur Verdoux
The only time I can sympathize with a criminal who...kills for a reason!Chaplin is a true innovator of ludicrous sarcasm and...bitter,social commentary.

Story of a Love Affair 1950,  Unrated)
Story of a Love Affair
A film auteur, literally and profoundly.Anything that goes against him, will probably go against the post-modern cinematic language. The debut feature shows promise and mystery, taunting the wealth of the era and feeling sympathetic to low-life characters, including the detective.Action is replaced by spiritual hesitation,a well-maintained picture, too accessible for an Antonioni film.

53
A Star Is Born 1954,  PG)
A Star Is Born
It's this tiny difference like Kurosawa's Idiot which brings me to the point of applauding the boldness of this whimsical restoration, even without the missing bits and deleted scenes,Star is Born is placed amidst the unique triumphs of Cukor,"give me a reason to love you" as Portishead recently sang...(Mason is quite the charmer to be frank)
54
La Strada (The Road) 1954,  PG)
55
The Night of the Hunter 1955,  PG)
56
Un condamné ŕ mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle oů il veut (A Man Escaped) 1956,  Unrated)
57
Giant 1956,  G)
Giant
James Dean is in and out of the screen. The respective leads flash in an instant and if the terrific direction won't shun you, family epics aren't your thing.Stevens reaches pinnacle and as the sparkling tension of American civilized attention processes,we can always diminish those criticisms and enjoy the ruthless catapults of ranchers, crooks and brawlers.
58
The King and I 1956,  G)
59
Aunt From Chicago 1960,  Unrated)

62
The Vikings 1958,  Unrated)
The Vikings
The craft of Fleischer's adventures is the exploitation he slams in each and every film of his.Historical allusions often make ingenious appearances, aha! The difference however of the current production of "swords and sandals" is the cheesiness of it.Gladiator in front of Vikings is like a child sucking from its mother's breast!!!!
63
Le Beau Serge 1959,  Unrated)
64
Lotna (1959) 1959,  PG)
65
Sleeping Beauty 1959,  G)
Sleeping Beauty
Superb villain on a Disney film, many will assume it's their cup of tea but don't expect the sugary elements of Cinderella and as heroic as it is,it cannot be compared to the recent Disney abominations like Hercules and Atlantis.
66
The Apartment 1960,  Unrated)
67
Psycho 1960,  R)
68
Spartacus 1960,  PG-13)
Spartacus
It's peplum, was Hollywood able to avoid this Italian influence?
Kubrick (or should we exclaim,Douglas) had quite a strong force of talented cast and crew, the outcome is a breathtaking feature with an incredibly hidden symbolism and a passionate grasp, whatever that would be,battles, dialogues, gender distortions, everything has such an order that's it's no surprise Spartacus is on the top 10 of the "sandal" films of Hollywood. And Ustinov is such a dude!

Sĺsom i en Spegel (Through A Glass Darkly)
Magnifico Bergman,a splendid anatomy of the human remorse and parental arrogance.God isn't a disbeliever rather the entity on our heroine's interior expedition. The Oscars awarded it foreign language film.So what? The best should have been the ultimate prize, but you see,it's a joke, language restrictions I suppose...

The Longest Day 1962,  G)
78
Lolita 1962,  Unrated)
Lolita
I feel rather indifferent to the public reaction towards Lolita, none but the caressing heart.Few times novels that post-modern manage to possess enlightening adaptions on-screen and if Kubrick's frail and gargantuan song doesn't show this, then critical and public division is righteously so...

La Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels)
Realistic piece of delightful"slash"melodramatic love story.Card players deal,Demy follows our pair of quizzes and jinxes,or maybe fortunes of luck?Nice, the Bay of Angels, brilliant Moreau, what's the catch?Unless you don't believe in optimism in films sometimes, avoid at all costs.

Nattvardsgästerna (Winter Light)
Coming into the second bleakness of the trilogy,a clarification and a distant remorse,Gunnar Bjornstrand gives acting lessons and the limits of breakthrough and Deity create a fruitful bond of knowledge.Well, and unsurpassed atheism.

The Flight of the Phoenix 1965,  Unrated)
The Flight of the Phoenix
Buddy movies are repulsive.Skinless the least. And how has Aldrich restored my faith on those action boiled themes? It was easy after 30 minutes of his reviving Phoenix. The malevolent desert, the terrific cast, the insignificance of life lest that darned plane sets off.

The Taming of the Shrew 1967,  Unrated)
The Taming of the Shrew
Zeffirelli at his hilltop symposium.Enticing and uplifting in most parts,Shakespeare would be utterly pleased from the final result no matter how theatrical it appears. There's faith on the endless bout of the sexes and a reconciliation in a (assured) comedic matter.Costumes and art direction are shining but what strikes most is the aggressive formation of...the couple's performance!!!A rich adaptation lacking that certain something for a complete 10!
104
Who's That Knocking at My Door? 1968,  R)
105
Isadora (The Loves of Isadora) 1968,  PG)
106
Planet of the Apes 1968,  G)
Planet of the Apes
A fantasy classic, who would've thought apes would be humanity's doomsday...or perhaps a sort of world salvation? An apocalyptic finale indicates Schaffner's scope and impressive mis-en-scene.Sensitivity and hostility from both species, just as nature intended?
107
The Producers 1968,  PG)
108
Targets 1968,  R)
Targets
Superbly filmed and enticing in its narrative description, there are plenty of homages for every film-buff to enjoy, plus a frustrating comment towards gun-use and the obsessiveness of addiction.Either it's the glamorous industry or shooting for fun...
109
The Thomas Crown Affair 1968,  R)
The Thomas Crown Affair
Jewison is accommodated with the frustrating social/racial clashes during the 60's-70's era rather heist films.Thomas Crown is a gentleman thief. The kind of type you know he's a deceiver and cares for specific things, something ms Anderson aka Dunaway is aware.Jewison orchestrates both of them as pawns of a chess and if the check mate isn't successful, his rich, sly crook is just as perfect as his introductory scene.

117
Five Easy Pieces 1970,  R)
Five Easy Pieces
Another father-son relationship which unprecedentedly marks the end of 60's innocence for the U.S. and what is to be done has already started. On behalf of the conformists: do not watch this movie,it's too skeptic.Oh,am I snobbish now?Well,go to Pattons and Rockys. If these were the American 70's,I will pledge for cinematic voodoo.Complain about nothingness for it's the best element of Seven!
118
On The Comet (Na Komete ) 1970,  Unrated)
119
Ryan's Daughter 1970,  R)
Ryan's Daughter
Compelling, aesthetic to the flesh,Miles is divine and superb as the no strings attached Rosy.Lean is masterful depicting long, riveting landscapes stretching to the edge of feelings. The storyline is actually far more solid than in Zhivago and the epic quality of this fairytale juxtaposes the sexual lust.
120
Dirty Harry 1971,  R)
121
Johnny Got His Gun 1971,  PG)
Johnny Got His Gun
A touching anti-war movie.Curious to find out?The enthralling hospital events are cut in accordance to Johnny's memories of his past life...before becoming a "plant" in the battlefield. So the doctors think.Trumbo justifies his hero's sanity through symbolic divisions and a helping nurse yet the inevitable dominion will arrive.Johnny's actions are noted in his mind as either mistakes or beneficial herbs.Trumbo might not be a director and manages on his sole feature to grab our soul's most tearing part.

American Graffiti
A movie icon of teen inconsistency and boldness,Lucas doesn't preach,he openly welcomes diversity and his nostalgia shows no trace of melodramatics. The soundtrack is the main attraction, and I'm not exaggerating!Candy Clark of course...
136
Robin Hood 1973,  G)
Robin Hood
It is a cute and exuberant little Disney flick, avoiding the tear jerking moments of the lot in Walt's cupboard of tales, but there's also incorrigible pragmatism and forcing someone to be touched isn't always working.King John however is one of the most hilarious "villains" in cartoon history!

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Delirious puns and intentional jokes on moral cajoles.Stampede of anarchy and ever since its release,a defining "drag" classic. It sure isn't like the stage play, but Curry is on a roll, the music just keeps going on immediately after the finale, all in all, hypnotizing madness!!

L'Innocente (The Innocent) (The Intruder) 1976,  R)
L'Innocente (The Innocent) (The Intruder)
Visconti's opera out of control...Loosened strings and the damage is catastrophic. If only it were in the middle of his creative period,we would be placing it amongst gigantic films like Ludwig. An artistic exuberance nonetheless reaping the inner personalities of the protagonists. The eye-candy costume/art direction representation is a wondrous contrast to the filth of aristocracy.

...And Justice For All 1979,  R)
...And Justice For All
Unfair treatment back then for a modern classic as of now,Jewison proved by the end of the 70's his authority in groundbreaking scenarios constructing them in romantic adventures of male idealists.Romanticism as a notion without the juicy parts, and Pacino's role is what the cause prevents him from doing.Bullet with Butterfly Wings, twisted paradox for someone who breaks into the law's bargain?
160
Breaking Away 1979,  PG)
161
The Brood 1979,  R)
162
Caligula 1979,  R)
Caligula
Of course it's a porn flick, undercover in an "almost" real storyline, historically designated and we all know Tinto Brass is but a mediocre naturalist. It surpasses paradoxically Emmanuella since it does not always contain a mere passion to third party caresses. What am I talking here?If it weren't for MacDowell's splendid portrayal,it would be a bitter Turkish delight.
Well....bitter is one word and trash fun is another!

City of Women (La cittŕ delle donne) 1980,  R)
City of Women (La cittŕ delle donne)
Effeminate and the most feminist of all Fellini's films, none can forget features made by Russ Meyer but this one does require a second re-read.While on one hand the glamorous city jolts of tender females, the next step proves to be a mere complication of idiosyncrasy.Snaporaz (a fabulous early reference in 8 1/2) is a bargainer and the lesson he'll learn whether it's permanent or not is for the inner female to be unleashed through his curiosity because taming it would be mental (and chauvinistic) torture.
170
The Elephant Man 1980,  PG)
The Elephant Man
Stars falling and dreams smashing.Lynch divides his audience and nevertheless leaves behind him as time goes by a few glorious films and Elephant Man is no exception.Like a miraculous essence, all of the motifs indicating racism and betrayal are obvious in this film, whereas trust is dangerous in the wrong hands. The self-destruction of this Elephant Man is society's slap to the cheek.

Quest for Fire 1982,  R)
Quest for Fire
The sole "prehistoric movie" to assemble the human instinct on species still immature of their physical identity.Warriors, mammals, united or separated,it's a pretty engaging motion picture by Annaud,so don't even bother watching Emmerich's blockbuster atrocity.
180
History of the World -- Part I 1981,  R)
181
Reds 1981,  PG)
Reds
Political romance, the harsh criticism will attack with a low blow and yet this certain, passive ability of Beatty to glorify what has become a symbol of revolution is more than stupendous thinking at the same time an achievement like that hasn't occurred ever since Eisenstein and Gone with the Wind paused and the biased "wealthy" successors took responsibility.Communism in the hands of serious Hollywood equals superb awe... Loads of arguments?Sure, but heck,I bet P.T. Anderson was a bit influenced by this film to create his magnum opus, don't you think?
182
Scanners 1981,  R)
183
Thief 1981,  R)

Captivating,a truly unknown film investigating and studying the behind-the-scenes of the theater and their comical/versatile characters.Striking environmental observance and Yates creates his last grand film before his downfall. And Finney/Courtney give the BEST dual performance of '83.
195
Duvar (The Wall) 1983,  Unrated)
Duvar (The Wall)
Children prisons in Turkey,a grappling theme for all the heartbreaking souls.Unique and Gunei approaches in acute vibration the movement and progress of the kids' and teens' guilt of either petty crimes or even murders. The wall of their punishment is the analogy required for the authorities to place order and Gunei shows this certain order simply makes things worse instead of clean-cut education.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
An allegory of those teen flocks swarming the movie-theaters expecting to enjoy the pop corn and they suddenly come to the conclusion they'll throw up.Honestly, this Nightmare may not persuade you to faint or even hide under the sheets yet Craven's flamboyance carries too much of a pride to melt in perpetual gore.Freddy knows it!

Sweet, dark, insatiably compelling in its low-budget.Jarmusch needs no introductions,he's the living king of autonomous film-making in the United States, with another exception of John Sayles.Fantastic facial expression of the characters' dullness, loafing around in complete sanity.

This Is Spinal Tap
Marty DiBergi: David St. Hubbins... I must admit I've never heard anybody with that name.
David St. Hubbins: It's an unusual name, well, he was an unusual saint, he's not a very well known saint.
Marty DiBergi: Oh, there actually is, uh... there was a Saint Hubbins?
David St. Hubbins: That's right, yes.
Marty DiBergi: What was he the saint of?
David St. Hubbins: He was the patron saint of quality footwear.

Fuck me mate...

Kiss of the Spider Woman
Babenco's jack pot in Hollywood was the death of his Oscar career. So what?Against the norms of studio decisions,Babenco controlled a subject truly remarkable and whoever thinks love and passion was a revolution in Brokeback Mountain, this is the real deal, the deserted souls.A fragmentary relationship gives the opportunity to Julia and Hurt to deliver exceptional interpretation of two incarcerated figures. What is fantasy constitutes the unacceptable and yet..so enticingly lustful.A memorable 80's film, different in structure and depth.

Panayotopoulos expresses his love for the medium, cinema.A Greek filmmaker who has re-captured the auteur essence on the one hand and like this film managed to over-impress with his capacity. It's a haunting film though,Variete, and don't let the meaning of the word fool you.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Sure, the 80's do show a reckless enthusiasm, momentarily because this hilarious comedy is one of the great teen flicks with a fresh scenario and no overreacting allusions e.g. Bill and Ted style.A jolly ride for me.

O Melissokomos (The Beekeeper)
The most accessible Angelopoulos you can reach.A terrific intermezzo sequence in between the laboring of the protagonist and his suppressed sexuality.Memories and evoking scenery, there's certainly a poetic homage to natural distraction. The tumultuous landscape of Greece serves as a paleolithic, facial doorknob.Outcasts are not allowed here.

This is how American cinema should be...openly dense and fearlessly howling to all contenders, bouts from every corner of this world. It's a terrible newsreel,Bukowski on the screenplay of a Schroeder film, pessimistic,as far as the jackals can move...Rourke in an electrifying performance.I gotta get a drink...

The Belly of an Architect
A Belly of transgression.Snatching Mertens, offering Dennehy his must-see performance and yes folks, this is Peter Greenaway, out of the best directors working in and most importantly for cinema.Gasping with awe,the appropriate toast to a twisting little diamond from Albion.Nations, personalities collide with misery and treachery.Amongst 87's works of art for sure.

Good Morning, Vietnam
It's possibly THE one-man show from Williams. In addition to my previous remark,it's also the best dramedy about the Vietnam conflict (Tropic Thunder, are you kidding me?) and it's truth be told Levinson's greatest attempt since then.Oh yes, sorry Rain Man.

Hellraiser 1987,  R)
Hellraiser
An ambitious film, initiative of a long-running series where Clive Barker's magic wand increased a predictable amount of upcoming gore. The original is as one reviewer mentioned "tame" considering the recent lackluster examples.Well, forget those examples,a relentless storyline, jumpy cuts and a Hollywood aura make this semi-independent flick slightly different from the usual horror movie and yet desperately seeking to find an identity like the decayed protagonist.

Bold cinema, you'd feel it was like some sort of nouvelle vague homage despite the monotony of the characters and their "rebellious" attitude.I was immensely surprised however by the self-destruction of the protagonist Louis Garrel (definitely talented) and the rest of the gang through the joy of life, opium, sex and lots of 60's hallucinatory references.A wonderful homage for whatever the case may be.

Whenever a director defies rules, criticism rises.Reygadas isn't yet a big art-house name.He dares and no matter how sour his anti-Catholic story may seem, the fact he chooses to show ugliness in an enticing way, should we assume ugliness is a universal term by the "civilized" people, proves he's a director with guts and focus!

I shall applaud Lin,and a thousand more cheers if he continues to preserve this aromatic stigma like in this picture.Jia Siao-guo as the nerve-cracking psychologist and Lunmei Kwai as the feminine free spirit fill the screen with superb warmth, parts of the road trip triangle, immobilized by time and yet in search of this love, this flame,a "something" to root for.

Whether you like it or not, cinema has come to an auteur point of disorder,so experimentation is nowadays the brand of practice.Garrone is a freshman although this statement should not refuse us to contradict his methods.Southern Italy as a battlefield.Eisenstein's editing, use of mass and short cuts of human tales are his elements.

Strella
A masculine movie in spite of the exceptional twist somewhere in the middle,Koutras is evolving, leaving behind aliens and bourgeois salons, there's simply a bohemian state of free-spirited individuals (with a fine sense of rhythm in the frame by frame observance of the social status) alongside the neglect for but also the casualty of "strange" people.
Orfanou playing the titular transsexual sparkles in her debut and Kokiasmenos presents a stiffed ex-inmate,beginning a chain reaction stretching to a (curiously enough) panegyric finale.
