The Count of Monte Cristo 2005,  Unrated)
The Count of Monte Cristo
Gerard Depardieu is outstandingly good in this 6 hour mini series about 'La Comet de Monte Cristo'.

So much more detailed than the hollywood films - this series is In French with english subtitles....but the story is so ingrossing that reading the dialogue isn't a chore, and the time just flew. This is a revenge story....my only cripe is that there's no sword fighting in it! Otherwise it's perfect.

Jesus of Nazareth 1977,  Unrated)
Jesus of Nazareth
The performance of a life time. Robert Powell IS Jesus.

Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) 2001,  R)
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
I agree 100 per cent with Timeladyinred !
Very clever. Glad i saw it.
I'm beginning to think there's no such thing as a bad French film!!!
I really enjoyed Amelie....and loved the way all the loose ends were tied up at the end. The photo booth story was class!
4
Jean De Florette 1986,  PG)
Jean De Florette
When you consider what the film is actually about - (farming, water and greed) - It's quite surprising that it's ranked higher than a lot of action blockbusters! But it richly deserves it's place as one of the best French films ever made. Not just pretty to look at (over and over again ) but a great story with excellent acting.

Great performance from Gerard Depardieu and all involved.

The Road Home (Wo de fu qin mu qin) 2000,  G)
The Road Home (Wo de fu qin mu qin)
Surely one of the most beautiful faces on earth....Ziyi Zhang.

I didn't find the film slow at all.....A beautifull moving experience. I 'welled up' a few times lol. In a way the saddest part was seeing that Zhao Di grew old and became an old woman (the innocent sweet smiling face gone forever....well not quite). I would have liked to actually see them get married...the colour portion of the film flew passed too quickly. Defenatley a 'Keeper' - One to see again and again. I can't explain how emotional this film makes me....i've never experenced such...i don't know! I felt like i was feeling everything she felt....her facial expressions related a million words in a micro second. I was in the film....not a film....an encharnted experience which brings a lump to my throat just reading the reviews!

Death Note (Desu nôto) 2006,  Unrated)
Death Note (Desu nôto)
WOW!!!!.....Intelligent, clever, original and it's hard not to have your eyes glued to the screen. Instant classic. Just like to add that this proves you can have a high death count WITHOUT loads of blood and gore. This is classed as a 'supernatural horror' but the 'horror' is more drama then horrible images.
A refreshing change from the usual bloodbaths that splatter our screens.

Death Note: The Last Name (Desu nôto 2) 2007,  Unrated)
Death Note: The Last Name (Desu nôto 2)
I think it's best to watch this straight after DEATH NOTE as it's a continuation of the story. The pacing is slow like the first film....These aren't action movies....more like a battle of wits. I was worried that the ending might mean that these two films wouldn't be re-watchable.....but thankfully that isn't the case. The downside of 'Death Note The Last Name' is the long isolation sequence....like the Tape monitering in the first film....I feel this was a little drawn out. Great films but nowhere near perfect so no five stars. However Great characters....and i want Misa phone number.

Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India 2001,  PG)
Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India
Usually i find cricket SO Boring.....but rather like Baseball in 'The Natural' this is a must see film! Never a fan of Bollywood films before (too much singing and dancing.....even if it is part of telling the story) BUT there's no denying LAGAAN is one if not the best entertainment to come out of Indian cinema. What i liked was the amount of different characters and their individual stories which made you side with their cause. The story was well told, and there was a nice build up of tension even before the match started. Basically it's about a bet that can't be refused....if the Indians win the cricket match against the British, then they will pay no taxes for three years......but if they lose....they have to pay thriple the amount they are already paying. This tax is called LAGAAN and the village people are already struggling to pay the normal amount of tax. Bhuvan is tricked into taking up the wager....even though the Indians haven't played cricket before. The nasty bad guy Captain Russelll has staked his reputation on the British winning....
There are some Bollywood style songs and dances here which i must admit i skipped over to get back to the 'action' but most of those which i did watch actually did add to the feel of the occassion and lent more detail to the story.
P.s. LAGAAN is at number 14 on the BBC's top 50 films to see before you die.

The Eighth Day (Le Huitième Jour) 1996,  Unrated)
The Eighth Day (Le Huitième Jour)
An emotional rollercoller! A Great Great French film ( Belguim director.)

Top class performances by both brilliant actors. Wonderfull story.

A MUST SEE!!! Can't agree with the reviewer about FORREST GUMP and RAIN MAN. I love those films as well.
12
Forrest Gump 1994,  PG-13)
Forrest Gump
Quite simply the best film i've ever seen. Watched it countless times. The most quoted movie in the history of my life.
13
Musa (The Warriors) (Musa the Warrior) 2001,  R)
Musa (The Warriors) (Musa the Warrior)
Epic.. I liked the way the action scenes were long and exciting, rather than long winded and dull build ups. The story flowed well, and the ending was fitting if not a bit sad. Awful trailer.....don't be put off! Out of all the Asian battle films this is my favourite. Beautiful music score. Forget Red Cliff.....this has more passion and better characters.
14
Ben-Hur 1959,  G)
Ben-Hur
Classic chariot race and story. Epic film. Very long. Always one of my top films.
15
Sleuth 1972,  PG)
Sleuth
Don't let the slow beginning put you off. SLEUTH is a master class in acting. Wish i could watch it for the first time again because you couldn't guess how this film twists and turns. Ok so it's very stage play....but that's part of its charm. Two actors giving their best performances in a far fetched murder mystery that's a little silly and mellodramatic at times but never boring.
I don't think there's a film like it out there. Highly recommended. Rated in my all time top twenty.
16
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 2003,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
The best Pirate film of all time. And i've seen them all.
17
Die Hard 1988,  R)
Die Hard
John McClane and Hans Gruber.....My kind of Hero and Villian.
Copied a million times, but never bettered.
18
Planet of the Apes 1968,  G)
Planet of the Apes
The make up is extraordinary....even by today's standards (terrible in the Tim Burton film).....also THIS film has Taylor, Nova, Zira and Cornelius.....all amazing characters. As Charlton Heston rightly says....'It's a madhouse'!

Kaiji: Jinsei gyakuten gêmu (Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji) 2009,  Unrated)
Kaiji: Jinsei gyakuten gêmu (Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji)
It has it's moments. Good over acting in a comic book way. The intense scenes were a little drawn out but enjoyable. I guess he got what he deserved in the end.
22
Ichi 2008,  R)
Ichi
Some nice photography, some very made for television set pieces. The idea was good, and some of the delivery, the film has pertental but the fight scenes are pants and uninspiring. But i've already watched it twice....and it gets better. Just the fighting could have been a little longer.....if you're going to kill with just one thrust why not have twenty enemies instead of five? And some variety would be nice! Ichi takes longer to replace her blade into the walking cane than to stab her unfortunate foes.
23
Mulan (Hua Mulan) 2009,  Unrated)
Mulan (Hua Mulan)
Although the main fault with the film is that Mulan is obviously a girl, (which could have been disguised by make up, blood or being bald) it would be a shame if you couldn't overlook this and just enjoy a great story well told, The film gets better as it progresses... many battles are talked through in seconds and suddenly Hu Mulan has become a Genreal but. It's not too bloody or unrealilistic, and i thought the focus on the story instead of just cgi was refreshing and made me wish to see it again. Mulan just misses greatness (#4 stars) in my book because there is a special ingrediant missing from the mix (not sure what, maybe no overall legendary scene) therefore i will rate it as Very Good and will be rewatching in the future.
24
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo.) 1966,  R)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo.)
Although a half hour too long....i have to have this in my top twenty. Any film that you've seen hundreds of time is worth it's weight in gold. The music score on all 3 films is legendary, and Eastwood, well.....coolest dude ever.
25
Gladiator 2000,  R)
Gladiator
Strange that i didn't like this at the cinema....but grew to love it on repeat viewing. I feel sorry for the Emperor!
26
Rain Man 1988,  R)
Rain Man
Cruise and Hoffman grow together in this picture, and form an understanding. Oscar material i think. Top 20 film.
27
The Great Escape 1963,  Unrated)
The Great Escape
Richard Attenborough leads a fantastic star studded class in the best pow classic of al time. So many great actors....and although some parts couldn't have happened, they are still highly enjoyable.

Kong saan mei yan (An Empress and the Warriors) (The Kingdom and the Beauty)

A Matter of Life and Death (Stairway to Heaven)
One of my fav golden oldies. Very clever. Colour on earth, black and white heaven. Great story. Don't like the French guy, but hey, nice moral love story and happy ending. The table tennis bit is class!
33
Cast Away 2000,  PG-13)
Cast Away
My second favourite Tom Hanks film.

Wilson is a stroke of genius.
34
Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower) 2006,  R)
Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower)
From the director of HERO and HOUSE OF THE FLYING DAGGERS...
CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER is His best film that i've seen.
A beautifully crafted Palace sets the tone for this story.
Not only is every scene beautifull, but the slow build up and character study makes you appreciate the gravity of the situations. This is a hundred times better than CROUCHING TIGER....which was just plain silly and not as perfectly visional as this.
COTGF is still not a Great film, but for a soap opera with an amazing battle added at the end it's well worth seeing.
35
Saam gwok dzi gin lung se gap (Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon) 2008,  R)
Saam gwok dzi gin lung se gap (Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon)
Good not great. Twenty years covered in 20 seconds. The music is epic....obvious fans of "For a Few Dollars More"....It works very well although it can only be heard in the final battle and on the film menu. There's enough story to cover the bloody fighting, it's just not as good as 'The Warrior MUSA'....which is how i rate all war/ solider films from now on.
36
The Duellists 1977,  PG)
The Duellists
It's like visiting an art gallery and being shown a selection of beautifull priceless paintings. In a way the fantastic visuals grab you more than the story. Ridley Scott's first feature film is amazing to look at, and the simple idea of a 15 year bout of duelling really appealed to me. It's all about honour.....if you can't put yourself in their shoes about what honour means to soliders in Napoleon's army, then you won't understand their mentality in this film. The only downside to this picture was the quick time shifts. We settle into one year and ten minutes later 6 years have passed!

Btw - 96 minutes flew by! There could have been a few more duels.....longer ones....But i still really enjoyed it.
37
Meet Joe Black 1998,  PG-13)
38
King Arthur 2004,  PG-13)
King Arthur
A film i 've watched and enjoy countless times. Just forget it's called King Arthur. It has Romans and great battles (always a good sign). Beautifully filmed and told.

Spider-Man 2 2004,  PG-13)
42
Kick-Ass 2010,  R)
Kick-Ass
Although there was excessive violence and profanity....( shock horror - we live in an age where teenagers get bored very quickly with films that don't have blood and guts spilling out, or massive explosions which make you jump in your seat at the cinema )......i actually warmed to the characters and story as time went on. I especially like Hit Girl, and the use of random great music like Elvis' 'An American Trilogy' and the theme from the classic Spaghetti western 'A Fistful of Dollars'. It seemed to take parts of 'Leon' , 'Spiderman' and 'Batman'.....and weld them together with some success. I'm not sure about the message here.....but as a piece of entertainment it worked. In fact the violence ending was quite comical.....not what i expected. The violent deaths are so quick and well executed (pun intended) that the brain has very little time to register the 'yuck' factor. I enjoyed this film, and thank my daughter for giving the old guy a chance to kick ass and feel young again.

Les Visiteurs (The Visitors ) 1993,  R)

Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991,  R)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Having watched thousands of Action movies.....This (and DIE HARD) are the creme de la creme. I love the director's cut.
46
Chat gim (The Seven Swords) 2005,  R)
Chat gim (The Seven Swords)
Not as bad as the ratings suggest.....more enjoyable that 'Crouching Tiger' or 'Warlords'.....but very confusing as the characters are all similar apart from the bald general.....He laughs like Mutley (Dick Dastardly's green mutt in the Warner Brothers cartoon 'Catch the Piegoin'!) soz for spelling.
Some nice scenes, and nice fast pace keep the interest....great photography and sword fights imagnitive. Downside would be .....The director needs to step back a few steps so that the action is more complete. Too many close ups which miss some of the action! See someone's head sliced off is ok but close up it losses the impact. Worth a watch or two.
47
Tube 2003,  R)
Tube
If you like Die Hard or Speed....then i think you'll like this. Good stuff. Entertaining all the way through. Love the girl, she's a doll.
48
Léon (The Professional) 1994,  R)
Léon (The Professional)
Right from the beginning you're on the side of the Hitman! Jean Reno and Natalie Portman are thrown together in an unusual relationship which helps the film evolve into a very special piece of entertainment.
49
Bend It Like Beckham 2002,  PG-13)
Bend It Like Beckham
A Gem of a feel good movie. Everyone in the cast was superbly different and likable. The story was interesting and hugely entertaining. Repeat watches?....DEFINATELY! Juliet Stevenson was brilliantly comical.....and Keira Knightley was Hot Hot Hot! The film had Tearjerking moments as well as comedy, colour and love. The passion for football holds the lead players together. Highly recommended....a great film....

The Mask of Zorro 1998,  PG-13)
The Mask of Zorro
Bought back memories of the 1940's Zorro i watched as a kid in the '70's.

Lots of swordfighting and colourful sets.

Ok the 1940's series was in black and white! But this is classic old school stuff.
54
Bean 1997,  PG-13)
Bean
Engaging story which can be enjoyed over and over again. Apart from 'Black adder' this is the best thing Rowan has done.....and i love it.
55
Army of Darkness 1993,  R)
Army of Darkness
The third film in 'The Evil Dead' series is more 'big budget' than the other two. It certainly keeps me entertained on return views. It's not suppose to be scarey. More comic and wtf. See Evil Dead 2 first, but don't bother with the first film. This film starts where the 2nd one finished.....and there are 2 different endings to this film on the dvd....i prefer one to the other.
56
Evil Dead 2 1987,  R)
Evil Dead 2
The first 10 minutes are a recap of the first film (re-shot again for some strange reason) Anyway this second installment is be far the best of the trio.
It's pretty sick actually.....and i don't usually like watching flying eyeballs and lots of gore, but i do like Ash (Bruce Campell) and you can't help but wondered if this is all in his head after what he did to his girlfriend.
Some imagination has gone into the look of this (horror comedy?) and i find myself giving three stars....especially for the scream by the bridge, and the most surprising ending to the film. In truth i use to watch this a lot but find that now it's more 'yuk' than entertaining.

The Mummy Returns
Hasn't quite got the magic of 'The Mummy' but just as entertaining.
61
A Very Long Engagement 2004,  R)
A Very Long Engagement
Wow! What a Great picture. Couldn't tear my eyes off the screen. I wanted to watch something to replace the emptiness left after enjuring the terrible 'Pan's Labyrinth'....i thought i'd see what 'A Very Long Engagement' was like....was just going to watch the beginning, but was blown away by the story and the cinematic delights, and watched all of it, eyes glued on every blissfulll moment. Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a Genius as far as i'm concerned, director of this film AND 'Amelie'. I will now have to check out his other work. Audrey Tautou was superb too.....she actually convinced me that i would now think of her as 'Mathilde' as well as 'Amelie'. I bought this dvd second hand for a £1....and it's already a great investment. There were lots of 'browns' in this film as opposed to the red and greens of 'Amelie'....and it all worked very well.....and there were some other simualities including the fantastic photography and fast cutting editing. A true treasure of a war/ love film which shouldn't be missed if you love great cinema.
62
Little Big Soldier (Da bing xiao jiang) 2010,  PG-13)
Little Big Soldier (Da bing xiao jiang)
Extremely dull and flat, very average.....watch The Myth instead.
63
The Myth (San wa) 2005,  PG-13)
The Myth (San wa)
Brilliant beginning....has other good moments....worth a few watches.

A bit silly near the end. Overall very good and unusual. The two time levels work very well, and weren't confusing.
64
Arn - Tempelriddaren (Arn: The Knight Templar) 2007,  R)
Arn - Tempelriddaren (Arn: The Knight Templar)
i'll admit i watched this first on youtube, like it and then ordered it. And i'm glad i did because the second half of the film is completely different to the one on youtube! Maybe that's because it was going to be two films? Anyway this version was better. It's not the director's cut (which is about to be released at 3 hours 10 mins....but this version was long enough. Enjoyed. Good Swedish film ......and no fiddling wirh subtiles as automatically on.

In the 1980's this was a different kind of film. Hugely watchable and inventive. But the second film has blown it out of the water.

Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West) 1968,  PG)
Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West)
A good western but i prefer the dollar trilogy. This is just too drawn out. I've nothing against a slow moving classic like this....i just think it could have been done in 90 minutes. BUT...the soundtrack is epic, so haunting and beautifull. It's one of those films that has some great 'moments'.....but isn't a great film. Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda are great but Buy the music instead lol.
74
The Edge 1997,  R)
75
Alive 1993,  R)
Alive
Haven't watched it recently but i remember it was a fascinating tale of survival......A true story that starts with a plane crash and develops into a harrowing tale of the survivors who are stranded on top of a mountain....with no chance of rescue.
76
Interview with the Vampire 1994,  R)
Interview with the Vampire
Not in a lot of top 50 best Horror films.....but i would rate it in the top 3.

Cruise is outstanding.
77
The Truman Show 1998,  PG)
The Truman Show
Why do dvd covers reveal surprise endings to films? They did it with this one (and the 1968 Planet of the Apes).
Great idea for a film. Well executed.
78
Jesus 2000,  Unrated)
Jesus
Very underrated two part tv movie concerntrating more than usual on the Roman point of view. Gary Oldman ( The Fifth Element, Air force one ) plays a nasty Pontius Pilate, and Pilate's spy is pure evil, almost as evil as Satan himself (Jeroen Krabbe). But all eyes are of course on Jeremy Sisto as the man himself.
Although it has its faults .....Young Mary in love with Jesus? etc.....(and i was very worried where that was going....The film has some unusual ideas (most of which never appear in the gospels but do make interesting viewing.
For example - The film starts with a quick flash scene of Medievil Knights charging into battle shouting 'In the name of Jesus Christ'! And this is followed by a few seconds in the Trenches of World War two with a dying solider lying in blood.....hus last words 'Jesus.....Jesus....'.
Now i didn't see these ideas coming! Very original. And although the movie really slows down and the Jesus here is VERY human, there are some clever scenes with the Devil etc which made the story less predictable.
It's too far from the gospel for some people....and an American Jesus does seem a little weird. Is this film as great as Jesus Of Nazareth (1977) or 'The Gospel Of John' which was made the same year (2003) ? A fat NO of course, but it certainly has it's moments.

The Pianist 2002,  R)
The Pianist
The story draws you in. You are witnessing the horrific things he sees.

Easier to watch than S. List. I have only watched this twice, and need to see it again.I think some people are put off when they read it's a war film.

It's a beautifully crafted true story of a jewish pianist who somehow survived the nightmare encounters that were going on around him.

The Visual Bible: The Gospel of John 2003,  PG-13)
The Visual Bible: The Gospel of John
Henry Ian Cusick makes a great Jesus! It's funny but when i watched LOST i always thought of Desmond's character as looking like Jesus!

I think he did well considering that it's word for word JOHN'S Gospel.

There are some points where the 'message' is over long or over used, and the constant narrative does stop the flow of the film sometimes.

But overall a remarkable achievement.
86
Young Sherlock Holmes 1985,  PG-13)
87
The Sound of Music 1965,  G)
The Sound of Music
For someone who doesn't like musicals, i seemed to have watched quite a few!
Classic of course.
I don't think there was a proper sequel lol
The 'Singalong' version is brilliant....my son loves it.
88
The King and I 1956,  G)
89
The Sting 1973,  PG)
The Sting
Redford and Newman are outstanding. I don't like the 1930's setting so maybe a remake would be good. But actor wise they won't be beaten. A crime movie more concerned with humour and character than with blood and gore.
90
Brubaker 1980,  R)
Brubaker
Redford's great performance takes an average story onto the next level.
91
The Natural 1984,  PG)
The Natural
Let's get one thing straight....i don't really dig baseball.....but i've watched this film countless times. There's something mystical / magical about this story.

For one thing Roy Hobbs has carved a bat out of a tree that was struck by lightening when he was a boy. He calls his special bat 'Wonder Boy'.

Early on in the story we see that Roy has a 'natural' talent for baseball.....but the young man's dreams are bought to an sudden end.....

Years later, well passed his prime, he re-enters the game.....but nobody wants some old man batting for their team.....
The Natural is simply a wonderful movie, greatly underrated by the Academy when the Oscars were handed out. Looking back, it is unbelievable that this fine film received not even a single Oscar nomination. Outstanding, beautifully understated performances across the cast create an emotional atmosphere that draws you in each and every time you watch the film. Randy Newman's magnificent soundtrack has the power to move you at all the right moments, and the camera work is beautiful - just watch the backlit, "haloed" Glenn Close stand up during a crucial moment in a game and try not to be impressed. A fundamental knowledge of baseball is helpful but not essential, for the real message is not in the game, but in the lessons in life Robert Redford's character, Roy Hobbes ("The Natural" in the story) learns along the way. This is not just a sports film, it is a love story - and in more ways than one. As Roy reflects upon his life late in the film, he says "Some mistakes I guess you never stop paying for." Well thankfully, the long-standing mistake of not bringing The Natural out on DVD has been rectified at last. The Natural has always one of my top all-time movies, and on DVD it has come of age. I highly commend it to anyone who loves the thrill of the gladiatorial showdown in sport, anyone who loves a good old-fashioned love story, and anyone who maybe has lost their way in life and needs to believe in something or even themselves again. Finely crafted, deeply moving, classic story telling at its finest. Buy it and be enchanted.

In the Heat of the Night
There's more to the two main characters than racial hatred. It's their different methods of detective work.....A 'city boy' and a country sherieff. They both go on a worthwhile journey, and so do we.

Whistle Down the Wind
A timeless classic which has some memorable scenes and dialoge. An old fashion picture about the innocence of children and how they see things differently to adults. A remake just wouldn't work today....

Brighton Rock
I think this is the ONLY Gangster film i really like. Def a Classic.
Love the character of 'Pinky'. Richard Attenborough is superb in the tilte role.
A bad ass for a change! I really like the build up and the ending. I wonder how his wife would have reacted if she'd heard the truth?!
Doctor Who fans look out for the First Doctor ..... William Hartnell.

The Adventures of Robin Hood 1938,  PG)
The Adventures of Robin Hood
A feel good movie made in 1938 but in glorious colour. Basil Rathbone a year before he started his 7 year black and white Sherlock Holmes films!

Yes it's very camp and there's tight silly costumes but these are just the victims of their time. Relax, sit back and watch in wonder.

Probably Flynn at his best. It has adventure, humour, love, and a great story....and a bowl full of cheese!

Very slow paced, but it works. Maybe could have had a better longer ending?

JFK 1992,  R)
JFK
Hypnotically watchable. A 3 hour films has to grab your interest from the start, and this does. It's a great film like 'All the President's men'....but for pace it's the opposite....JFK is very fast moving - information, conspiricies and flashing pictures hit you at full throtle - Kevin Costner puts on a good show, as does Gary Oldman....but Donald Sutherland is exceptional in a minor role. JFK is fascinating. It's intellegent. It may not be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, but scenes talking about 'the magic bullet' really made you think just who was involved in this cover up?
Seems that we will find out in 2029!!!!!

De Niro is good when he's not a gangster. Irons is always good.
The best part of the film is the waterfalls scene at the beginning.
Later Niro says (to Irons) 'You laughing at me?'....sound familiar?
The cinematic setting is stunning. But the story loses it's way.

The Last King of Scotland
Although i'm in my forties and have heard a lot about Idi Amin on the news, i didn't really know much about his story. This film is from the scottish doctor's point of view.....and i found the movie quite fascinating. Forest Whitaker was very believable, i can't see how anyone could have played the part better. Also James Mcavoy (an unknown actor to me) was also outstanding. I wasn't expecting the scenes near the end, although they didn't surprise me....all in all a very fine piece of entertainment and slice of history to savia.
Very impressed.

Barry Lyndon 1975,  PG)
Barry Lyndon
How strange! The first half is very good - Till the 'Intermission...Then it's like a completely different film - The second half sinking into boreham untill the dual near the end. Plus points are the fantastic use of picture painting woven into the story....fascinating scenes beautifully reconstructed letting us into another bygone world. I was going to give this film 4 stars after 'part 1' (great) - BUT what a let down was to follow! The story (which was slow anyway) was suddenly in slow motion by part 2. This was followed by the main character immediately turning into a bastard for no apparent reason, and the majestic scenery (which was the highlight of the film) gave way to mundane interiors where extended dialoage ruined all the brilliant build up of Barry's life. I found myself savoring every second of part 1 (hence the 3 stars for Good.....but wishing to fast forward most of part 2!
What a shame there were two halves,,,,It was reminding me of Ridley Scott masterpiece 'The Duellists' (1977 just two years later)....but without the action....At 2 hours it might have worked. Also i must say that although the narrative was ok at the beginning.....it got tedious long before the end.
My advise would be to watch the first hour.....A truely unique amazing experience.....then turn the telly off and invent your own end to the story.

Very good. Not great, but re - watchable. I wasn't looking forward to the ending (because i thought there wouldn't be a good one seeing as no one knows who Jack the Ripper was! ) BUT it was quite imagnative. For a two part tv series running at 190 minutes it wasn't bad at all. The second part was slightly stronger, Caine and Collins as a kind of Holmes and Watson....but without many clues.

Cyrano De Bergerac
A famous bitter sweet French love story.

Depardieu lights up the screen with his fake big nose and romantic poetry.

It's better than Romeo and Juliet. I watched this for said actor.....and the hope of some swordplay.....it turned out to be a romance (with a different)

The girl thinks her hanesome solider (Christian) is the one sending her letters from the soul, and making love to her through poetry beneath her balcony at night......but things aren't always what they appear to be.

I think the girls will enjoy this more than the blokes.....but then again i'm a bloke.....but i haven't got the words or the big nose!

After seeing this a second time i'm deducting half a star because the pretencal was there for a good story but the pacing and story was just too slow to keep me interested. Really enjoyed this. After such poor reviews i wasn't expecting much so was quite surprised that i wanted more when it finished. Especially liked the water fight with Godfrey. Re - cap - I watched it again this evening.
Beautifully photographed, visually striking. Indeed a beautiful but violent film. Fantastic music score!!!
Very fanasty/myth based film which will appeal to those who didn't like the more recent 'King Arthur'. Very wierd and strange but randomly good. Has to be seen rather than explained. Just remember it was made in 1981.....
Some parts are epic.....some parts are very made for tv......some parts like the story, jump around and things get very confusing......some parts are plain daft or a case of wtf. And the acting could have been better. It's laughable in some places.
At it's best it's a feast for the eyes. At it's worst it's a bad 1980's tv play.
For this reason, although some parts are outstanding, i can only give it 3 stars. A case of if only all its parts were as good as it's best....a classic would be born.

Battle Royale 3D
Violent.... yes, but FUN. Some gruesome deaths. I guess the shock factor is more to do with the fact these are kids ( I won't say school kids because the whole point is that hardly anyone goes to school anymore!). The truth is there is a lot of black humor which works really well. The version i saw was 150 minutes not 154....or 109 as stated on the cover. So i don't know if any scenes were shortened, it never seemed so. The pacing was good. The picture was dark for the first half hour (due to it being night of course), although the lighting could have been a little lighter. I really enjoyed the film. It wasn't the usual gangster revenge blood bath, these were mainly KIDS who had played truant from school. I thought it was acted ok, and there wasn't a dull moment. In fact, the direction was very good, successfully blending in some kids stories in talk or flashbacks, and doing so without losing the momentum of the film. I thought the ending was a nice surprise. Yeah, great movie. One to think - What would i do in that situation? One more thing....the music. The classical bits really showed how absurd the 'war' was....You have this beautiful delicate music in some of the calmer moments. Nice touch!
SPOILER:
Anyone 'get' that in the photo taken on the bus, the kid's head is missing!

Taare Zameen Par
Aamir Khan is a frigging Genius! I was enjoying the movie.....but wondering when the Legendary Aamir Khan was going to appear (1 hour 10 mins in).....Wow that was some entrance! Both he and the boy deserve credit for their performances. There are songs.....but refreshingly they all sound different, according to what mood and what's happening in the film. Also the film continues while these songs play out, so they relate to what's happening as much as the pictures do. I'm not sure if the title in English is 'Every Child Is Special' or ' Like Stars On Earth' - It doesn't really matter. What matters is this is one of those 'experience' films.....the type that goes far beyond your average entertaining movie. This has heart and emotion.....and the message is a strong one. There's a lot of invention and imagination - shown through animation and painting....and of course, there's always hope and understanding. And Aamir's first time as Director as well as his usual Producer/ Star roles. After seeing this a few times i'm still wet with emotion....going to bump this up to 4 stars (Great).....because of the last hour.
